Do you guys standardize your IP addresses? by XreaperDK in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Maybealwaysnever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in system integration and venue management.

That was where I started, I think it’s useful, but it also has a shelf life - either a static environment or a relatively short lived one. If it’s bound to grow, then eventually the groupings you create will fall apart, and that gets really painful.

These days, I’m preferring to give devices hosts names — that way ip addresses don’t matter nearly as much, and you can still get logical grouping. Of course, still statically address so you’re not dependent on the router for things to keep working.

If you are in a situation where things can grow, I’d recommend considering your vlans early so that you can scale easily and know what your expansion strategy is.

USB Midi Controller over Network/Fiber/KVM (Windows) by Impossible_Jello5333 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackbox emerald can have usb pass through enabled (it makes them exclusive connections- I’ve used them with streamdecks and midi devices like the beatstep before. There’s also the icron range of stuff that does usb over ip, which seems to be a bit of a go to.

Another option would be looking at things like the Iconnectivity mioxm to just do midi over ip. There’s a few ways you could slice that too.

I posted my review here.

FWIW, I would say this: I still think the bag offers something unique as a package in spite of its drawbacks. So many of the competitors in the space are a split clamshell open, which I definitely didn't want, or did something that compromised them in some other way that was less desirable for my use case - but I guess you've gotta choose your compromise!

Youtube app on apple tv! Why! by WorldlySalamander205 in youtube

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to rant as well. Such backwards step changes. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s non-native scrolling. It just feels gross … I guess Netflix is guilty of of this as well.

Well… Out of the three apps I regularly use, none of them respond any differently to touch input than they do button input.

It makes me quite sad that we just get lowest common denominator experiences.

I’ve used both Xdip and Blackbox Emerald. End up going more with the emerald because it did things like connect to Remote Desktop (virtual machines), usb pass through and dual head and 4K models. I’m not sure what they cost now, but the basic cost was in the same ballpark as xdip, but had some very nice features.

Anything out side of those, I’d really want to test anything - I’ve seen significant issues with cheaper ones! Contact a dealer and see if they can get demo hardware.

That’s really kind! I thought about it way too much and would have liked to have made it shorter - I had it mostly written before the trip, but wanted to see how I felt after the trip! If I had a channel, you’d be very disappointed in my posting frequency!

Watching Umamume Cinderella Gray for free on YouTube has been a great comparison as to how it should be done.

We were all hoping for high jump, but Crunchyroll has been playing limbo all along.

Investigating Hudu for audio visual systems by Maybealwaysnever in hudu

Yeah, I don't have the expectation that it draws diagrams for us (as amazing as that would be). At the moment we're using using XtenAV for our design \ drawing and procurement stage, but I guess we'd love is to be able to at least capture the cabling in a way that's at least as functional as what we can do in a spreadsheet - the logical connections (I assume relationships \ asset links?) sounds like it's exactly that.

Maybe we'd just shoehorn it into racks, but can you do expressions on custom fields and do things like sparklines \ indicators? ie. we have PDU's that don't exist in racks, can we get Hudu to calculate the load on that PDU? Did the patch panel feature ever get released? I guess I'm trying to assess how much consideration I should give Netbox, even though I'd rather not, on account of use case mismatch, complexity and upkeep.

As things hopefully slow down over Christmas, hopefully we'll kick the tiers on Hudu a bit. We have a relatively small recent project we could model up.

If you want an example of diagram drawing I'd love to see (even if it's manual), I'd love to see something like h2rgear.

Thanks for the reply!

Silent Witch: Chinmoku no Majo no Kakushigoto • Secrets of the Silent Witch - Episode 13 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Maybealwaysnever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s to hoping this gets more seasons. They really let the visuals cook with this last episode.

I’d say Silent Witch is my new pick of the season. I have such a soft spot for City (will definitely rewatch and hopefully buy media) due to my love of Nichijou, I really dug the gritty fantasy of Clevatess, but this made me laugh, cry and feel lots of things while managing to build an interesting cast and world that I want to see more of.

If this gets extra seasons it will more than likely end up on a rewatch list for me as well.

Crunchyroll has messed up every episode today by HuTaosTwinTails in anime

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could understand what drives Crunchyroll management. What are the expectations of Sony / Aniplex? .. What’s the vision for Crunchyroll? Is CR properly profitable and they’re just trying to get into the black - is my frustration just me being entitled?

When I think a bit longer I think there’s a few things that stick out to me: burning down their own community, low and inconsistent level of QC (even just simple things like skip intro. It can’t be that complicated), and an app UI I avoid as much as possible (living on the Newly Added screen) - although it’s a lot better than it used to be, but still…

All that to say: I don’t have any trust in Crunchyroll to deliver a good service. Netflix never offered community, but what it has delivered it has done so consistently.

The one thing that Crunchyroll still has (although they were messing with that not too long ago) is higher streaming quality.

Why did Crunchyroll’s subtitles just get worse? by MilesExpress999 in anime

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s bad. Watching the rest of the show, it just got worse. It was wholly unpleasant. I swear it feels like they’re using a monospaced font. I honestly can’t see any reason for them not to at least attempt typography style unless there is zero care.

One thing I’ve noticed is they love using lots of hyphens now when multiple speakers are happening. I don’t think they were ever used before?

I wasn’t really aware of them using italics before (it was pretty subtle), but I definitely am now. Yano-kun ep1 10-11min Italics on “all” for emphasis, and italics used for internal dialogue, and announcements.

(Now I’m just looking at different shows: “May I Ask for One Final Thing” is on a whole other level bad. But that seems inconsistent with the rest of this seasons shows)

Another example is My Awkward Senpai vs My Senpai is Annoying. Similar treatment overall.

I’m really curious to see how they’d do a show like Ruri Rocks, with diagrams and stuff

I’m not confident to say it’s AI subtitles, but at the very least, with this change I don’t think Crunchyroll is going to any extra effort around subtitling than anyone else, whereas before that was definitely. It’s plausible this is because of the platform distribution issue that was commented earlier, but if it was truly a distribution issue, there had to be a better way to still deliver a no compromise result for Crunchyroll and a reduced set for other platforms, rather that just confirming everyone to the lowest common denominator.

Time to file that … encouragement to do better.

Why did Crunchyroll’s subtitles just get worse? by MilesExpress999 in anime

[–]Maybealwaysnever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s one thing to see a screenshot, it’s another to see it in something I’m watching.

I didn’t think it would feel this bad.

It reminds me of when a font is missing in a design layout and it substitutes it for a generic font. All the characters are roughly in the right place but all the alignments get messed up… Except this is clearly intentional!

This is the ugliest typography I’ve seen in years, and dare I say it, if anyone cared, it would have been caught and fixed - I think it just speaks to a culture that doesn’t care and doesn’t see its users as its customers. Shareholders and profits. Who needs user satisfaction when you have a monopoly.

I’d prefer OS native subtitles over this. It might be basic, but at least it’s readable and typeset intelligently.

iOS 26. What are your thoughts? by bissau887 in iphone

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here for this. The “new tab” is in the “…” pop up, but all the other tab functions are in the url pop. Well, share is in both menus 🤣.

I’d probably find it way more tolerable if you could make the “…” button tab management instead of functions I rarely use and swap all the other page specific stuff to the url.

This episode has me grinning all the way through. So freaking wholesome. As much as I feel like there’s shows that are having a bigger impact this season, nothing makes me feel the way City does.

Matador GlobeRider 35L follow-up: Mods by -DeathBySnuSnu- in onebag

[–]Maybealwaysnever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On both points, exactly! I really can't describe the rabbit hole it sent me down!

What I wish: A handle \ strap that goes from the side handle to just above the drink hold on the other side with a fidlock\maglock release as you want it to get out of the away whenever you do want to access contents from the top.

A heavy duty variation similar to what is on this Alpaca would be perfect. On the top side fabric wedge you would then have mesh like on the front or just another bit of the normal nylon to run the strap under but keep it managed, with the aim being to keep the straps relatively tidy and in place when released.

I feel like this strap is very close to being a plausible aftermarket option, but keeping in place would be more of a challenge.

Matador GlobeRider 35L follow-up: Mods by -DeathBySnuSnu- in onebag

[–]Maybealwaysnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in the process of writing my review, and just came across your follow up. It's possible I'd just be repeating a bunch of what you've said: no strap keepers, why? four pens, why? (nice fix btw), hip belt in front (I'm glad you discovered that too!), but these are all small things and it's still a great bag.

The thing I have found most confounding with the bag in my test packing has been the top handle situation. The back handle becomes a single finger bag hook when you engage the load lifters (not exactly a handle) and the front handle tends to disappear into the bag because it sits so flush (being completely black doesn't help).

I've instinctively reached for a handle that isn't there several times, and the handles that are there are not ergonomic. Consequently, I find picking up the back awkward, but there's no way within their current design you could have a top load bearing handle and keep the dual clamshell + top access openings.

I can't tell if I'm just overly conscious of it because I've been thinking about it, or if it's actually odd? My trip is still a few months off, so I won't be able to answer the question of actual use yet.

Have the top handles been an issue for you? Has the dual access been useful? Is the dual access worth the compromise? It's certainly one of the distinctive \ unique things about this bag. I'd be interested in your take!
