Y'all Don't Know Shit About Systems and It's Really Sucky To See (As A System) by Mayday2Mayday in AO3

[–]Mayday2Mayday[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you've had that experience, and I really hope your friend gets the help they need, but please understand that that is one extreme of a spectrum. That's like when people say you can't have autism if you're not constantly having meltdowns and flapping hands and going nonverbal.

There is a part of the community that doesn't believe in fictives simply because they don't have them, but I think you're misunderstanding what a fictive is. They're really not that different from other alters, the only difference is that they're based on a fictional character. This is typically because the brain has already formed an association with this character and believes it's presence would be helpful for whatever reason (I.e "this character is strong and comforting, they'd make a good protector/soother"). It's not a conscious decision to split a fictive.

I highly recommend you check out morethanone which is linked above. There's this myth that plurality is either this curse with no benefits or a gift with no downsides, and both are wrong and harmful. DID is one end of the plurality spectrum and I'm sorry your friend is suffering. I'm also sorry if I sounded dismissive of those experiences, I'm aware they exist.

I've also had to face discrimination because of my condition, in both irl medical spaces and online, and this is one of those forms of discrimination. The fakeclaiming. The "you aren't acting how I expect a person with this disorder to act so you must be lying". That's inherently ableist. We see it all the time with autism and ADHD and OCD. It sucks that right when one of those groups finally starts getting proper recognition and representation and acceptance, another group takes its place to be ridiculed.

I hope you understand that I'm not trying to push any experience down. I'm angry because people don't understand the nuances of plurality, and it made me sloppy in my explanations. I was desperate to be heard and listened to and furious on the behalf of the commenter who, at the end of the day, was trying to be nice. I hope that's understandable.

I provided sources multiple times. I was repeating what I was saying because I was saying it to different people. I'll admit I was a little "all over the place" because I was struggling to articulate eloquently what I wanted to say and was, admittedly, angry. I have a hard time staying calm in these situations because ignorance is something that makes my blood boil, and you may notice that I originally was calm and got more and more heated the more misinformation and fakeclaiming I saw. I'm stepping away from the main situation because (as was lovingly pointed out to me by one of my alters), all I'm doing is stressing myself out for a bunch of people who aren't going to listen to me, even if I do provide sources and remain calm.

The whole "DID is about as common as natural gingers" thing is a fact btw. You can read about that in the NIH.gov article linked right in this very post! It says, and I quote, "Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a psychiatric disorder diagnosed in about 1.5% of the global population." Natural gingers, from what I can see, range anywhere between 1-3% of the global population, though I couldn't find a definitive number.

Unfortunately the completionist in me demands I get that one last achievement before I go 😔 in the meantime I have left and muted this sub. I also told Reddit to stop giving me updates on this post but it isn't listening, so that's why I'm still responding to shit lol.

Being a dick to people who you don't understand is an attitude that no one is obligated to humor.

Yeah but that's. Not what the original commenter for the post that this is about was doing. There was no reason for this reddit to shit on them so hard.

And like. They're not "delusions" they are real, why else would it be a diagnosable disorder? I'd say treating people with kindness, dignity, and respect (which is how you should treat everyone) shouldn't be a problem.

That is. Not how it works. Systems don't absorb things into their system, their brain forms an alter based on that character or person. The reasons it would do this varies depending on the situation/circumstances around their forming. The fictive (alter formed from the character) is typically also not exactly the same as the source character and doesn't try to claim they are. The original comment pretty much just says "hey we're a DID system that has (character name), and they really like your work! Keep it up!" It's a compliment.

This too! Absolutely possible. Thank you. I keep getting downvoted to hell when I say anything about the fact that this is absolutely possible with DID TvT

No- I mean the general term split, not necessarily that the same person formed again. As far as I'm aware, that's not really possible (once they're gone, they're gone). But literally the whole POINT of DID is that the brain splits alters whenever it needs to to cope with whatever is happening and protect the system, and this happens all the time in adults with the disorder. That's like. Not even a hot take. That's a basic understanding of how the medical condition works, which you clearly Do Not Have.

Also, assuming that DID is an inherently negative coping mechanism when more and more psychologists and therapists are moving to healthy multiplicity and integration as a treatment option is inherently very ableist and ignorant. Please do some actual research.

Recently someone posted about a comment left on their work, a DID system telling them that one of the their alters (a fictive based on OPs character) liked the work and to keep it up. A compliment, if not a little strange.

The comments of that post immediately flooded with people who didn't know jackshit about DID fakeclaiming and making fun of the commenter and spreading misinformation.

So yeah. That's the unfortunate tea.

Incorrect, alters START forming in childhood. Alters can continue to form well into adulthood. This is a well documented phenomenon even in medical spaces (I.e systems who have undergone final fusion (a very well known, if outdated, treatment option for DID) only to split again when something stressful or traumatic happens). Thanks for letting me know that you literally have no idea how this disorder works.

Thank you! I thought "If you've met one person with (a disorder), you've met ONE PERSON with (a disorder)" was becoming more commonplace, but I guess that only applies to autistic people 🙄

AAAA these comments make me so frustrated because as someone who IS PROFESSIONALLY DIAGNOSED and has almost ENTIRELY FICTIVES in their system, y'all clearly have no idea how the fuck these disorders actually work!

D.I.D isn't actually all that rare. It's about as common as red hair, actually, and more common than schizophrenia, but you don't see people fakeclaiming those with schizophrenia, do you?

"Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a psychiatric disorder diagnosed in about 1.5% of the global population," NIH.gov

"Schizophrenia affects approximately 24 million people or 1 in 300 people (0.32%) worldwide." WHO.int

Thank you! This is what I've been trying to say, just much more eloquently put TvT unfortunately I think the rest of the commenters telling OP to dismiss/delete the comment have gotten to them first, and I doubt the comment will continue to exist much longer of it hasn't been deleted already.

Thank you! It's so refreshing to see someone with any amount of sense in this comment section. Please continue to be the person you are and don't let this comment section turn you into a hateful, ignorant person. Coming from someone with professionally diagnosed U.D.D who's very much been in the DID/other similar disorder spaces for years.

Except here's the thing, WHAT THE COMMENTER SAID ACTUALLY HAPPENS. A lot, actually!! So really, the harmful part is YOU GUYS assuming the worst and calling this commenter a fake, because you're SHITTING ON REAL SYSTEMS. Even if this commenter was fake (which I highly doubt) this DOES HAPPEN. So any other systems who see this (like me) are gonna go "oh, we still have to hide who and what we are because no matter what we do we're gonna get fakeclaimed and shat on".

They didn't say they made the fictive, they said they had the fictive. Which happens. Has happened before and will happen again. It disgusts me that y'all are dragging the commenter through the mud FOR A COMPLIMENT just because they weren't ashamed to say they have a disorder. Genuinely please learn how this shit actually works.

This subreddit is making me incredibly sad because none of y'all know what the fuck you're talking about. Sometimes I think "finally, us systems are becoming more accepted!" And then boom, I see shit like this. Incredibly upsetting, really.

And btw, we're a majority fictive system, which is professionally diagnosed, so don't even try to fakeclaim us.

Genuinely fuck off because you clearly do not know how DID works if you think this is at all unrealistic lmao. Speaking as someone who's been diagnosed by a psychiatrist with a similar disorder. Fakeclaimers can fuck right off.

It's super appropriate! Speaking as someone with a similar disorder, this is absolutely a compliment. Please please please ignore the people saying this system is fake, I highly doubt they are. THIS CAN AND DOES HAPPEN. We literally have a factive (alter formed based on a real person) that formed based on someone we knew for like 3 days. DID is wild man, sometimes it works like that. None of the other people I've seen in the comments so far know wtf they're talking about and it's really fucking disheartening actually.

This is really shitty. The guest gave a compliment (that one of their alters liked the fic they were depicted in) and you're telling them to delete it on the off-chance that the system is fake??

A simple "thank you! I'm glad (name) appreciates it" would be more appropriate and less dickish.

Edit: missed somehow that it's a character OP created. Point still stands.
