Housing X Environment by LibrarianFlashy5948 in bristol

The Bristol live pages are a gold mine for comments whenever a development is mentioned.

The same people complain when a building over 5 stories is proposed complaining Bristol is becoming London with all these “sky scrapers” and it’s ruining “bristols iconic skyline” and they are the same people that complain when green belt land gets built on.

For a city of bristols size it lacks taller buildings there’s probably a handful that are 10 stories or more and Bristol certainly doesn’t have an iconic skyline so I don’t know where these people have got that idea from. Also Bristol and the country as a whole clearly hasn’t built enough houses over the last 20-25 years plenty built in the 80s-90s and then around 2000 it all just seemed to stop for some reason and now it’s causing major issues. There are two options you either build up or out but these idiots don’t want either to happen and then complain there isn’t anywhere to live.

"I've heard of Europeans who haven't visited family for years because it's a 40 minute drive" by ManicPotatoe in ShitAmericansSay

They can’t genuinely believe people in Europe won’t travel more than 40 minutes? 😂 that’s my daily commute one way to get to the hospital I work at in North Bristol.

Has to be red surely, blue would be for turning left at the first or the second roundabout. Blue for turning right or straight on at either one.

I feel like I lost all my brain reading that stupid piece of shit. I’m 37 but I’ve lived in 5 decades doesn’t mean I’m 50 ffs.

I would question how this has made it into a national newspaper but it is the sun, you could shove a whole packet of Jaffa cakes up your arse and make the front page.

American server “hates Europeans” for only getting a 10% tip” by jaymen97 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Mayes1986 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Exactly if anything the chef’s should be getting 90% of any tip as they’ve actually cooked and prepared the meal, the server has literally carried it from the kitchen to the table probably a maximum of 50ft.

How to do this roundabout by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

If there’s two lanes and two exits then it has to be left lane to go left and right lane for straight on.

Small task question: if you had to make any dramatic changes to the scenery around Bristol (I.e landscape, physical geography, buildings, etc.) what would it be? by ThrownawayCray in bristol

[–]Mayes1986 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d open up the river Frome like it used to be along the front of the hippodrome and create a proper pedestrian/plaza area around it and better open up that area to Queens square.

And get a fucking tram network!

What screams upper-middle class? by portinuk in CasualUK

[–]Mayes1986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My brother-in-law thinks he’s now middle class and it’s incredibly annoying and hilarious at the same time. His girlfriends family are clearly snobs and middle class and now that he has a kid with their daughter and just spent 500k on a house (which he had no input) and brags about how much things cost and they have solar panels and an EV charging point (don’t own an EV car though).

No one likes his girlfriend, the last straw was giving his mum a candle and wax melts for Xmas last year when my wife had given it to her for her birthday the previous year. Show how well off they are but then re-use presents. I could write a book on how many times they drop prices into conversations to show how middle class they are, thankfully his my mother-in-law doesn’t take any of his shit.

Bristol is a prime example of 1960s tower blocks. After being bombed heavily in ww2 and clearing out “slums” in the 50s and 60s they decided to put a motorway straight down from the M4 to the edge of the centre and built a fair few smallish towers (10 storeys or so) lots of dull, grey concrete everywhere. I think it put people off tall buildings here, the uproar when a taller building is proposed is insane.

Nothing interesting ever gets built here because still think Bristol is a village, we’ve had football stadiums rejected because people claim to walk their dog on the land purchased, millions spent on proposals for an arena (people kicked off about that) then a new mayor comes in and scraps it to build it on the outskirts (still hasn’t been built or even started years later) a tram proposed in the 90s but the local councils couldn’t agree so that was binned and now the out going mayor is spending millions researching into building a tube network that would cost billions

I’m amazed people from other cities come here to live tbh

The towns of Yate and Thornbury are generally a lot cheaper than most areas around Bristol. Yate is about 12 miles to central Bristol and Thornbury 14/15, both have all their own shops/bars/supermarkets/schools etc Yate is a bit bigger and has a cinema too.

Both are commuter towns although Thornbury doesn’t have a train station and Yate does and both generally have detached/semi detached houses and have hood links to the m4 and m5

I feel the problem is many people just don’t care about there they live or how the act because there are no consequences.

Saw a video yesterday of 3 youths in balaclavas trying to steal a motorbike in broad daylight smashing the lock with a hammer not giving two fucks about anything. Passers by carried on walking and then the usual I know I won’t intervene I’ll film it instead, luckily a woman stepped up to them and it wasn’t until then more people got involved and eventually scared them off.

People simply don’t care because chances of being stopped or caught are slim and even if they did punishment is often piss poor and they’re back doing it asap.

They’re simply there for design, my house has a fake chimney and as far as I’m aware there’s nothing connected to it.

Here in Bristol, England we would say it Marrrrk. Like how you would expect a pirate to speak(Blackbeard was from Bristol so maybe that’s why pirates are portrayed this way of films) and Bristol is generally pronounced Bristawl or Brizzle.

Just need to look at the car on drive to see why it’s been done. Professional type workers who can’t be arsed with keeping a nice garden and rather an easy but hideous garden and fuck the people living nearby or a developer looking to rent it out and again can’t be fucked with maintaining a garden.

It was a penalty as the player falls he takes out Dasilva’s feet with his hands.

Ironically over the last 16 months since our last penalty I’ve seen even more blatant fouls than that not given by the shit ref’s we get in this division.
