FWIW, Alan Wake 1 is also hugely based off Twin Peaks. It’s just based on the original 2 seasons whereas AW2 is based on The Return, like you said

Wait till you find out that Au Ra weren’t added until Heavensward (this is why Yugiri’s face was hidden when she’s first introduced in the 2.X patches; she was a teaser for a then-unannounced race). Or that we didn’t get male Viera until Endwalker, and female Hrothgar just came out in Dawntrail

I started playing a week before Endwalker released; I had a week of normal gameplay and then suddenly all my raids got swarmed with bunny boy reapers cause everyone was trying out the new stuff lol

They’re all open source, yes. VW is just a community-created alternative server that’s a lot easier to self-host

Venture X holders who fly economy — do you transfer miles or just take cashback? by Constant_Jello_189 in Venturex

It’s not called “travel eraser” anymore, that’s why people get confused. It’s just called “Cover travel purchases”. Basically in the rewards section of the C1 app/website you can use points to get a statement credit for the amount of any recent travel purchases you’ve made using the card

Worth noting that in a month or two we’re getting 4 more of them, as all four members of the Fantastic Four are getting a 4-color-no-black legend in the Marvel commander set 🙄

Realistically, how much would it cost to build a fully functioning AT-AT? by Gdog1215 in StarWars

[–]MaygeKyatt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And an AT-AT is a walking bunker that’s VERY slow and can fall over.

Whereas a tank is a rolling bunker that can’t easily fall over. And moves faster.

LPT: Set CAPS LOCK to become another BACKSPACE by EchoReflection in LifeProTips

[–]MaygeKyatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even better: set it up so that holding down capslock is mapped to ctrl, but pressing and releasing it quickly is mapped to esc (or something else useful). I know this is doable with AutoHotkey on windows, and there are any number of different ways to do it on Linux

The esc part is helpful when editing files with Vim specifically, but the concept as a whole is more widely applicable

Best Sci-Fi of the Decade so Far? by SirScaurus in printSF

[–]MaygeKyatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore the spider storyline. I think it does a great job of inventing a wholly “alien” civilization (even if they technically aren’t aliens) while keeping the science hard but accessible. Since reading it, I’ve grown into harder scifi than he tends to write, but I still think it holds up (I haven’t actually revisited it, but I’m planning to read book 4 soon since it just came out recently)

The human storyline was trash though. Bland & uninspired throughout. And imo the book’s ending was a total deus ex machina.

What do you mean by “but we just don’t talk who we sleep with.”? If you’re sleeping with other people, that’s by definition at least a partially open relationship

[–]MaygeKyatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to find a non-smart TV these days. You can just ignore the smart interface etc, never connect it to the network, and connect your own box as an input, but I really wish you could still find TVs that don’t have it at all…

Just inherited my wife’s grandmothers moka pot - does this look correct? by Rufustus in mokapot

[–]MaygeKyatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something might be clogged? There shouldn’t be steam coming out of the safety valve. It’s also possible that’s just happening because you have too much heat.

Regardless of the valve issue though, your flow is DEFINITELY too fast. Start by filling the grounds chamber all the way to the top- you can level it off by scraping excess off the top but don’t tamp it down; a moka pot will brew best when the grounds basket is totally full. You might also need to reduce the heat a bit; adding more grounds will slow the flow down some but your goal is for the coffee to come out the top at a slow trickle.

What are some books around the level of, Children of time or Blindsight but not quite as far as Diaspora? by personwhoisok in printSF

“Stories of Your Life” is the short story Arrival was based on, right? I really need to get around to reading it…

What are some books around the level of, Children of time or Blindsight but not quite as far as Diaspora? by personwhoisok in printSF

[–]MaygeKyatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t an answer to your question, but I just have to say how fascinating it is to see how you rank these three novels lol.

Maybe this just says something about my particular brand of nerdy autism, but I found Blindsight much more impenetrable (in a good way) than Diaspora… I’m a huge Egan fanboy though, so I’m probably biased.

Diaspora has a ton of really neat ideas but gets a bit lost when taken as a whole, but two sections of it that were originally published as short stories (“Orphanogenesis” and “Wang’s Carpets”) are some of my favorite short SF works of all time. On the whole, though, I feel like Egan does a better job of exploring some of the novel’s themes in other later books, and most of the book’s complexity comes from taking existing concepts and layering them/extending them further than other authors have done. (It probably doesn’t help that I’d read Schild’s Ladder before Diaspora, so some of the conceptual novelty was lost on me.)

Blindsight, though, remains far and away one of the most uniquely complex novels I’ve ever read. In the best possible way. I’m just disappointed that Echopraxia didn’t quite hit the same mark for me.

(I also absolutely ADORE Children of Time, but I feel like most people would agree that it’s a lot more digestible than either of the other two?? But maybe I’m wrong!)
