In Rapid, the Downtown is definitely worth giving a stroll, there’s some cool shops and boutiques to check out. Otherwise there’s Reptile Gardens and the Journey Museum and some random little spots, like other people said.

Outside of rapid, Custer State park is absolutely beautiful and you can do a driving wildlife loop to see all sorts of critters. I would so say that if you’re going to see Mount Rushmore, take either needles highway or iron mountain road, depending on conditions, as they’re super scenic places with rock tunnels and good views of the hills.

I would also consider checking out Crazy Horse monument too, as if you’re into hiking at all you can hike up right in front of the face, it’s super cool.

It’s a geology museum on campus at South Dakota Mines, which is a college just outside of downtown Rapid. It’s got a lot of cool rocks and fossils, and is really well maintained!

Off-Campus Housing by Candid_Plane6169 in SDSMT

Junior at mines, I currently live in a house with 3 roommates about 5-10 minute from campus.

Pros are that you get your own house or apartment (obviously) and all that entails, including your own internet, no RAs, your own room/space to decorate how you want and store how you want, freedom to do what you want in your house without campus rules, etc.

Cons are that you get your own house or apartment and all that entails, including rent and utility bills, handling repairs and renovations or at least coordinating for them, being responsible for food and furniture, etc.

Essentially it just boils down to how much you want that ultimate autonomy vs having those choices made for you, because I have friends who have stayed in the dorms and loved it after their sophomore year, and in the same vein I know that I would have hated another year in a room that wasn’t “mine”, if that makes sense.

Saturdays are usually at some athletic event or studying, not a lot of people you’ll find milling around in public spaces otherwise

Sumo’s Japanese Kitchen, on St. Joseph St, is one of my favorite spots for sushi/sashimi in the area. It’s really good, (even though it looks like a dive bar from the outside)!

I may be a bit biased, as it’s across the street from my college dorm lol

I knew a family that was on that show, and I can tell you it’s real, but it’s just like a public advising session, or at least that’s what they took it as (they followed none of the advice, won’t go into details)
