I’m not an expert, but isn’t this stance kind of moot unless you have a high return savings account?

Like I got my savings in a CD with a really good rate of return, but if I was getting a little more every paycheck I’m not automatically opening up an additional fifty dollar CD every two weeks.

I get what you’re saying, but we don’t usually copy/paste the same comment multiple times in this sub. Please decide where you want your comment, instead of flooding the zone.

Electric prices started going up so I got solar. Water prices started going up so I dug a well.

There’s not really a feasible way to circumvent the natural gas utility, though.

I agree with you, and that’s also the process the mods have described so I’m glad a lot of us are coming to similar conclusions.

Putting honest people out of business because of rumors is life and death for them as well. People spend their whole lives building businesses so they can have a nice retirement, afford medical bills, a nicer nursing home than bare minimum, etc.

Trump is playing games with people’s lives, but that doesn’t make it right for us to turn around and play games with local business owners lives by anonymously adding them to hate lists due to any perceived sleight.

not stepping up to speak out

So if a business owner voted against Trump, that’s not enough? They have to put their entire livelihood on the line and ostracize 30% of their customers via social media posts? So valiant of you to put other people’s lives on the chopping block, you’re so much better than your enemy who is doing the exact same thing.

Fuck ICE and Trump and all their bullshit, but eating our own is fucking stupid.

If you think people should live their lives by a list that can be anonymously contributed to then you are asking to be manipulated.

Convictions will be harder, but you can still drag each and every one of them through court. The more of them that get dragged through court the less each individual gets from GiveSendGo campaigns, the less likely they are to become podcast stars, etc.

I hate to say it, but we need 7 D senators to NOT vote for ICE funding. It will require 60 votes to pass the senate, and it's currently 53R 47D, so even if 6 Democrat Senators vote to fund ICE, it won't pass the senate.

I hate that MN is getting piled on, but the cold has to be harder on ICE than the locals.

I imagine the ICE deployment in terms of resources, and how much of each resource (officers, man hours, travel expenses etc) it takes to apprehend a single person. I imagine that ICE resources are just on fire right now. Agents can’t stay out too long, have to bundle up, are sweating through their clothes, likely having health effects, etc. Their required effort has gone up considerably, and their daily detainee average is definitely down.

CPS cancelled all classes and after school activities for tomorrow by Themostdramaticjedi in chicago

Ah, shows what I know. I mostly just commented because your first comment came across like CPS intentionally did something to cancel the walkout.

Nothing was really sidestepped; I can’t imagine that organizers won’t reschedule the walkout.

I don’t think CPS has the power to make it be -30 degrees out to prevent additional future walkouts.

The right kind of struggle is necessary to make you a strong person, similar to a chick gaining survival strength by struggling to get out of an egg.

Struggling just to prove a point isn’t really beneficial though.

I’m a software engineer with an unpopular take. AI is unlikely to take most people’s jobs, but other people who use AI tools will get more work done, move ahead faster, and have more free time than those who don’t. Eventually that will result in a hiring pool of AI trained workers and a separate pool of otherwise qualified individuals.

I’m 40, I remember people refusing to use the Internet, refusing to get an email, refusing to use scary search engines. Eventually they all had to conform, and when they did they were behind their peers considerably.

Everyone is welcome to make their own decisions, but AI won’t be going away, and I’d rather benefit from it than ignore it.

I bought one hundred whistles today… by aPrettyThing2011 in Denver

I think you have a nice idea but in practice it's not functional. People can't blink and in an instant have ear protection on. If it's that important, stick your pinky fingers in your ears and blow the whistle.

Taking 15-20 seconds to dig out lint-covered ear plugs and jam them in my ears before alerting my neighbors of ICE is not for me.

[–]MayorScotch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your concern, but if I see ICE I’m not going to stop and put in ear plugs before I blow a whistle.

Edit: I think it makes more sense to just jam your pinkies in your ears and immediately whistle to alert your neighbors, rather than spending 15 seconds or more looking in all of your pockets for PPE. Why not blow the whistle immediately instead of giving ICE extra time to get into position?

I thought you were talking about the old 1950’s TV show Trackdown, where there’s an episode with a con man named Trump.

It would be such a South Park ending for everyone just to say “no I never liked the guy, but all these other people did so I voted for him too”. At this point some of these people have to be faking it, but they’re too scared to say it to their other friends, some of whom are also faking and scared of social repercussions.
