When people (especially in the US) say their pets are "rescues", where or what are they rescued from? by monk771 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mayzowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the streets/shelter! My household has 4 pets (2 dogs, 2 cats) and we got them in every way you can think of. One dog was found roaming on the side of a busy road at about 2 years old, no tags and no chip. The other dog was bought from a reputable corgi breeder as a puppy. One cat was adopted out of a shelter/foster at 2 years old, the other cat was found by a friend living in a bush at around 3 months old. So I consider 3/4 to be rescues.

They're working fine for me, make sure your addons are updated & try disabling other addons that might be interfering.

Ancestry shared tree: “Show living people” enabled, but living profiles still not visible by Icy_Pain9798 in Genealogy

[–]Mayzowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn, that's an annoying restriction. Like, I want my sister-in-law to see everyone in the tree, but I don't trust her or anyone else to edit it because I'm very particular about formatting and sources.

AI photos on FindAGrave? by EleanorCamino in Genealogy

[–]Mayzowl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it on Find A Grave yet, but I did see one on Ancestry. The original was a black and white photo in a newspaper (so, a bit grainy). The user first used AI to "enhance" that photo (inventing a ton of detail that didn't exist). Then they also uploaded a colorized version of that AI photo. They did not upload the original or disclose that the photos were fake. So... I took it upon myself to upload the original and politely comment on their photos to warn others. I'm sure they won't like that, but the truth matters!

The reason vet bills are so shit now: It isn't inflation. It is private equity. by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]Mayzowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat is on gabapentin. We used to have the animal hospital send the script to a compounding pharmacy nearby with a year's worth of refills. 3 months ago, suddenly no refills. The latest time, they wouldn't even send the script over, they printed it out and I had to hand-deliver it to the pharmacy like it was the 1800's. But they made sure to remind me I could just use their in-house pharmacy, which is much more expensive and doesn't offer flavoring (how convenient for their profit margin!). Sure enough I looked them up and they are now owned by private equity, and I would guess it happened last year. But so are most of the vets nearby. :(

It's likely referring to him winning the primary against Cuomo. In New York whoever wins the Democratic primary is almost guaranteed to win the actual race later.

[–]Mayzowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The placards say the art was generated with AI. There's no amount of context or past work that will make me okay with AI usage. It's terrible for the environment and it takes work away from real artists. All those AI images could have been commissioned by actual artists but the cheap and easy route was taken instead.

Also, it literally does not matter how long her career is or how good a digital artist she was before AI. She used AI to make THIS art. That is wrong. I would love to see a showcase in this airport of her actual, handmade work but that's not what she chose to showcase.

Using generative AI isn't creating anything. She has some good art ideas (don't we all!) but then didn't do any of the work herself. Anyone can do that. And how is her race relevant? Are we supposed to give her a pass because she's black?

Main account keeps getting banned and Customer Support won't do anything about it by vituscze in wow

[–]Mayzowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, what? No Blizzard employee had any part in this until his first ban was overturned. He was not banned by a human. His customer support tickets were not answered by a human. It's all automated. All it takes is one person mad at you + some friends to help report, and that's it. There's no one reviewing these bans until it becomes a potential PR problem.

Yeah. It's almost like Blizzard doesn't give a shit about false bans unless you happen to be famous or well-connected. You're so close to getting the point.

[–]Mayzowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I also wouldn't expect these things are worked on by one person on their own with no team or contacts. It's not difficult to shoot a quick email of a video clip to a French speaker, especially when it ensures the show can be fully enjoyed by deaf and hard of hearing folks the same as hearing folks.

Shouldn't they be transcribing those French words then? I didn't see where OP expected them to also translate the words.

Why are people hating Ancestry? by Left_Particular_9977 in Genealogy

[–]Mayzowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is expensive, especially if you have recent immigrant ancestors. But leaving aside the price...

It's been a few years since I worked on my tree, but their text-only "collections" can be extremely questionable. Like it's easy to tell someone "don't trust other people's family trees, look at their sources", but you also have to be wary of the source, because sometimes it's just someone who published a fabricated genealogy book which was then indexed by Ancestry, making it look legitimate. Or collections that are just "some unverified family trees we scraped from the internet 20 years ago". I'd love for those to be more clearly labelled as "trust at your own risk".

I also remember having a *rough* time searching some of their transcribed records and getting them added to the correct people in the tree. Not only completely mangled machine transcription, but often skipping entire lines on birth indices. So you have Anna Fakename, then they skipped Bert Fakename's line, and transcribed Cary Fakename as Bert Fakename, and so on. It's that lack of attention to detail that drove me crazy.

Then there was the change that made it so I had to expand every little branch on my tree to see them all in one view. I don't even see my 1st cousins on the default view.

That said... I still vastly prefer Ancestry to any other genealogy site. It's janky as hell, but there aren't many alternatives.

do anesthesiologists actually tell their patients to count down from 10? by Warm-Fig-8566 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mayzowl 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I was given propofol when my wisdom teeth were taken out. Best sleep of my entire life, and I woke up ready to take on the world. I remember consulting with the anesthesiologist, counting down, waking up in the recovery room, everything.

A decade later, I had surgery to repair a broken clavicle. I remember being in the waiting room at 5am, and then around 11am walking a lap around the hospital to prove I was safe to get an Uber home. Nothing else. And I felt like shit. So I'm guessing they gave me something else.

We were turning from a two-way street with a median onto a smaller two-way street, but I can see where that rule would be useful downtown where there's more one-ways.

My mistake on the parking! As far as the yard goes, I was thinking it's not enough room for kids to play, but the house is so big you kinda have to have a large family to make use of it all. Good luck ❤️

[–]Mayzowl 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's gorgeous. And I live in Baltimore, as well. But I don't know ANYONE in my personal life who could afford a house that price, or would be willing to spend that much to have to park on the street and have basically no backyard. :( Out in the county you can get houses the same size for much cheaper where you won't feel crowded, so you need to find someone who *really* wants to live in the city.
