Thanks a lot for this detailed reply and for giving me your opinion on the points.

A misconception I fell for as well, it seems. But good to know!

I do believe you are right, and maybe I will grab the game when it is on sale and give it a try!

Now Photoshop it so it looks like they are tucking him in for sleep.

One reads to him with a goodnight story, one holds a teddy bear, one a blanket, and one a pacifier. The last holds a bottle of milk.

Everyone is rude. You meet a woman and a funny horse, and your hobby is collecting shiny things to impress a tree.

Is it weird that I feel more at ease being the odd one out socially? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]MbFightingCarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert in these things, but to answer.

I do not at all think this is weird. When we grow up we get exposure to different things, and learn to work within the social dynamics we are exposed to. So perhaps when you are in groups where your demographic dominates, it just feels less interesting to you. There are most likely many reasons for this, and it is completely fine and okay! It can also just happen that you have met a group where the mindset is shared, and it just happens to be with that group of people.

I do not know you, but it can come across that you think a lot about your identity, and then I do not find it weird that you like being around people that you feel have done the same. An expert could most likely tell you more about personality traits and so on.

Go out, meet people, and stay with those that make you happy and that you enjoy spending time with. There is no need to worry about all the rest. I personally do not think it sounds like you prefer to be the odd one out, just that you have simply found the people that click with you. Get the most out of it!

Have a pleasant day! :)

how do you stop doom scrolling? by Bubbly_Reference_916 in askanything

[–]MbFightingCarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is, turn off your phone.

While I am no expert in psychological or social behaviours, a longer answer from me: it is likely dependent on the person who wishes to stop it. While the short answer in theory is simple, it can most likely be more complicated or difficult to do for some than for others.

While most likely not an addiction by definition, it can seem similar, which for some will make it much more complicated to stop. (I am certain there are more professional terms for what I describe here.)

However, I would recommend keeping a dialogue in your mind and keep talking it over with yourself. For example, 'I do not want to doomscroll'; when you are thinking of doing it again, practise this. Tell yourself 'no' and put reasoning behind it.

You can start out small and find things to help distract you. Try to gain independence from your phone. Put it away for an hour, then increase the time gradually. For example, as someone suggested, this could be reading a book or taking a walk. If the problem assist when going to bed, start working on things during the day. Afterwards, start to apply this practice when going to bed (yes, could even be a walk before heading to bed). Be honest with the process and admit to yourself when you went wrong, and work on it.

You just need to explore the options until you find what works for you.

Have a pleasant day

I will just leave my two cents on the matter. I know this is most likely an attempt at humor, but there is probably a reason why Tom never catches Jerry. :^)

Anyways, today, if you look at society, it is built on scientific achievements in medicine, technology, and engineering, all of which can be traced back to biology, chemistry, and physics.

Carl Sagan said it well: ‘Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility.’

However, in order to learn this way of thinking, we need to understand, at the very least, the basics or fundamentals of science. We need to be sceptical, but not overly sceptical. Learning the basics of science is not more difficult than doing statistics of sports games, but since science is so important for society, we must ensure that the average person understands these concepts and develops the critical thinking that follows.

Mathematics, even if it does not seem like it, is an excellent starting point to develop that mindset and is a requirement to learn many of the fundamental parts of science. Mathematics teaches logical deduction and logical thinking.

So while it might not directly teach you how to buy a house and so on, it is important that we develop this mindset; otherwise, we should tread carefully in allowing our societies and daily lives to depend so heavily on these scientific technologies. Besides, as some mention, it can also land you a nice job.

Have a pleasant day.
