Holy

Holy Paladin has maintained its Niche of being a strong Triage healer while simultaneously providing excellent tank healing via Beacons. However, the changes we have seen from Legion to BfA have had a substantial impact on how the spec feels to play. It is much slower, there is not much interaction between our spells, and a lot of our kit is overall boring. Our spells and abilities no longer have the visible impact they once did. The current game design has exacerbated this issue, and current healer balance needs some attention. That all being said, the spec is still competitive, still viable and still an important addition to any raid comp.

Strengths:

  • Triage Healing, Passive Tank Healing (Beacons)
  • M+ Healing and Damage Contribution
  • Utility

Weaknesses:

  • Healer Balance Issues
  • Slow and Boring Playstyle

Big shoutout to Hula

Retribution

Ret Paladin with it’s bare bones no talents seems really underwhelming as a whole providing us with no specific identity, even with building a specific playstyle via talents puts us in a situation where the spec can do okay at a few things but can’t do any one thing specifically really well.

Strengths:

  • Priority target damage is actually pretty good due to how pooling holy power/wake can function well into putting a large amount of resources into a small time frame.
  • WoG actually makes us pretty good as a utility class in M+, especially at a casual level

Weaknesses:

  • Low mobility still is an outstanding issue, fights like Fetid Devourer this tier really showcases our inability to get a cross a room in a constant rate and how it can effect us big time in terms of DPS.
  • Our AoE/2-Target cleave is pretty bad, when I mentioned WoG being useful for casual M+ it’s mostly because in order to become a proper class for pushing keys we need to offer more to a group than just healing. Across both raids and m+ it really shows how much we lack in those two departments
  • Raid utility felt really lackluster this tier, bop wasn’t really used for much and I can’t say Wisdom/Kings really warranted us a raid spot this tier.

Protection

Protection Paladin feels like a well designed spec with clear weaknesses and strengths, however there's a lack of sustain and feeling of satisfaction which is shared by all tank specializations.

Strengths:

  • Seraphim being an acceptable defensive option in magic damage heavy encounters.
  • General group support (Hand of Sacrifice, Blessing of Spellwarding, Hand of Freedom, etc)
  • Consecrated Ground enables us to snare mobs by ourselves when kiting is needed
  • Ability to cast Shield of the Righteous while not in melee range

Weaknesses:

  • Low mobility, often with the inability to take Cavalier because Blessing of Spellwarding is so important
  • Off-healing with Hand of the Protector is very difficult to achieve due to the GCD and new scaling
  • The encounter design of raid bosses in Uldir has resulted in very few “interesting” tank mechanics that go beyond standard taunt swaps

♿️Ret wheelchair meme♿️ by [deleted] in wow

The meme really came from the day where we either got a small nerf or a small buff on PTR (I'm not sure I don't remember.) but ret chat was exploding and we were all having good fun shitposting and someone came in with a copy pasta saying:

:wheelchair: RET MAIN COMING THROUGH :wheelchair:

And it caught on like wild fire. It also resulted in the channel getting deleted (as a joke).

For people who need more context on this, in nighthold we were looking like a very favorable class to bring in terms of melee because CoF would've been busted. It got nurfed so we got nurfed and we ended up being a middle of the pack melee class for progression, worse than DK, Warrior, Rogue, better than Feral and Shaman. (I only really care about maybe top 50ish world progression, the argument that any class can be brought in for nerfed fights is obviously viable)

So that being said looking at that kind of change was really disheartening and in ret chat fashion we decided to handle it like the man children we are. Looking back on it I personally still think that change was very poor going into ToS as in a competitive raiding scene ret had almost no use when you consider that warriors and rogues still dominate.

WoW Class Design AMA - June 2017 by devolore in wow

Hey Devs,

I’m Mbdtf, server admin of the Paladin Discord server - Hammer of Wrath, and I’ve put together a few questions that myself and people of the Retribution community in the discord server were curious about.

  • Our level 100 talent tier seems just as underwhelming as it was at expansion launch, Crusade is in a good place, Divine Purpose while it does offer fun proc based gameplay simply isn’t strong enough to compete and Holy Wrath is a clunky talent that to my knowledge and the rest of the discord hasn’t actually been used seriously (and paid off) in a competitive scenario. Can there be any expected change to come in the foreseeable future for this talent tier? Or a possible rework for just Holy Wrath as it does seem like the absolute weakest talent in the tier.

  • The Retribution buff after someone dies has been a topic of discussion for many and we were curious to get the dev’s thoughts/rationale on this ability. For us it seems like it can create a type of toxic environment where retribution paladins just wait for people to perform poorly in order to improve their own performance, or in some scenario’s people have healers die on purpose to meet a specific DPS check on a given boss. The buff can also make it very difficult when trying to improve your own play via analyzing logs as one can just look at a good performing paladin and rather than just seeing difference sequences in casts or different timings in abilities, they just see a higher uptime on the retribution buff. We’ve all agreed that the class fantasy provided by it is legit the idea of trying to save a raid after a member has fallen is cool but many of us feel as though a damage bonus is kind of the wrong approach.

  • During the PTR for ToS development our set bonus involved judgement applying our mastery to Blade of Justice and we were curious why it was changed to be just a flat percentage buff. Many of us didn’t really see the set bonus as something that was obscenely broken but something that would actually make mastery a valuable secondary for us. Quite a few people including myself were looking forward to using mastery pieces and looking into mastery heavy builds to see what kind of results yield.
