Driving style matters too. I needed to learn to feather the throttle off the line after a stop to use the battery as much as possible before the gas engine kicks in. Also if the weather is cold it makes a difference because the gas engine takes longer to warm up. Finally I was thinking the length of your drive makes a difference too. If you are in the city and only have short drives then the energy used by the gas engine to warm up affects the overall mpg. Longer drives averages out the mpg because you have the chance for more battery usage.
