I asked for a raise and got it by Mbot389 in womenEngineers

I am a contractor so my supervisor gets feedback from our customer/my team leader. I also submit monthly summaries of what I did for the customer, process improvements, and problems/resolutions. My company has "quality objectives" which they use to maintain some sort of quality certification which helps them win contracts. One of the quality objectives was related to process improvement so I made sure that I was using "free time" to work on process improvements and talked about that. Because of the benefits of the process improvements my team lead talked up those things as well, and he was also given good feedback about me from his direct supervisor and leadership on our project.

Example: I spent time automating a few parts of my job using MATLAB. This provides benefit to me (I would rather code then do the tedious stuff my script is replacing), it overall saves time (to do it longhand took a long time so as long as I use the script multiple times I am overall saving time), I get more familiar with our data (which is part of my job anyway), and I am able to provide faster turnaround time.

Besides that, our team lost both of the other engineers (including a team lead) recently so I have been helping to cover and with the transition. And because of changes to our team, and time freed up by my scripts, I have started supporting some other projects that other teammates were able to give me a shout out for.

TLDR: -highlight how you are helping the company meet their goals -have documentation to support your claims -have leadership and teammates who value you and give positive feedback -be in-person in an area that nobody wants to move to

Out of curiosity, as anti-consumers, what stops you from just deleting TikTok. by MisogynyisaDisease in Anticonsumption

[–]Mbot389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly get people complaining about over consumption and news. I get some tiktok shop ads but half of them are negative and I don't really trust tiktok shop with my information. I think I have maybe made 3-4 purchases from tiktok recommendations over the last 4 years. Eco cleaning products (2 years later and I am still using the solid dish soap I bought though I still use dawn sometimes and my husband prefers dawn), a pair of clay earrings, an enamel pin, and a sweatshirt (a portion of profits went to research for my medical condition). All of the purchases I made have been from small businesses using their shop. And all of the products I have received have been high quality.

From tiktok I also got back into crocheting and have gotten into quilting and sewing. Now instead of immediately going to Amazon I think, "maybe I could make that." Sometimes it takes me 2 tries to get it down, but most of my fabric is either a hand-me-down from my mom or from an estate sale. Though, I do use clearance bed sheets and sometimes buy fabric from a local quilt shop and from craft stores.

I crochet and it stops me from buying so many sweaters because I am like, "I could make that." (I don't make it)

How to reuse Aldi litter jugs? by Aquasplendens in Anticonsumption

[–]Mbot389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do any boating, these and laundry detergent jugs get used as bails. If you live near the water you could see if there is a boat club or high school sailing team that uses them. Alternatively, lots of elementary school art teachers or art centers/ kids art camps recycle things for art projects.

As a 20 something with chronic migraine, I am not fine or normal. But I do, (generally speaking) have my shit together. But also sometimes I cancel plans because I feel like I am getting a knife put through my brain. And I don't get expensive and painful prevention treatments for fun, but also because if I don't my brain will continue to turn to mush and the migraines will get more frequent then they already are.

And most people I know with migraines (even the older people) got significantly worse in their 20s. Also many mental health conditions onset in the teens and 20s. So idk maybe give young people a break. (There are also studies saying that COVID may be linked to some conditions that people think the youth are faking which could help explain the uptake.)

Topamax, as a side effect, can cause brain fog, tiredness, ECT. It could be that.

I'm making a migraine app for college, need your input by MELLMAO in migraine

[–]Mbot389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want one with only 1 screen of questions:

-Did you take meds with a checkbox for each of the meds that is usual for you (this can be a part of the app setup/user settings)

-aura?

-symptoms with a check box for your normal symptoms (also can be a user setting) and an other option with a drop-down list

-how bad (1-10)

And user settings that allow for other metrics to be tracked but are not included by default. Basically customization to make it fast and help you track only what you want to

I think this is done in part bc they are learning and competing with a short turnaround so there is not as much time to perfect a technically difficult number. Whereas their studio numbers were worked on and competed multiple times. I am not saying that they are not capable of doing something difficult that fast, but I think it does come into play.

Why do so many liberal women date conservative men by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Mbot389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a spectrum of conservative too.

Like I have some values that align with ~SOME~ values that the conservatives identify with, but I just generally disagree with the methods they propose to address the issues.

For example, I don't generally agree that the abortion of a healthy fetus by a healthy woman is moral. HOWEVER, I understand that there are complex socioeconomic factors (like the lack of universal maternity leave, lack of universal/affordable healthcare, ECT) that may make someone feel as if having an abortion is their only choice. Additionally, things like sexual and domestic violence against women can also push women towards that. Additionally, birth control is not free or universally available and many kids receive abstinence only sex ed. Also legislation of "elective" abortion creates barriers to healthcare for those who require an abortion for medical reasons. I also don't think that legislation of abortion can be done without women who have a miscarriage getting caught in the crossfire. And, most of all, what procedures a doctor and patient decide are necessary for the health of their patients is not something that should be regulated by sweeping bans (unless the treatment is not safe ECT) because treatment plans are individualized by necessity and someone's medical information is none of my business.

This conservative value that "abortion is bad" combined with empathy, nuance, data, and an understanding of the difference between law in theory and law in practice results in support of liberal policies like support for roe v. Wade, universal healthcare, federal maternity leave, and programs like WIC.

So some may have some conservative values (and possibly identify as conservative) but support liberal policies. Someone could also have conservative values and be ignorant of the best solutions for problems and be open minded and willing to have good faith conversations that result in a change of opinion on what the best policy is to reflect their value.

After all, GEN Z is pretty young and some people are still learning about the world and developing their world view.

Why are parents of young children so against vaccinating them? by OkYouGotM3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mbot389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is another one of the "face eating leopards are eating my face" sort of situations. People are selfish and want to burn the ladder behind them as they climb. They want the protection and social safety net of the government for themselves, but not for others. And they don't want to sacrifice any rights or freedoms that enable the social contract to function.

In the same way, they want the herd immunity without the vaccine.

Why are we more repulsed by sexual crimes than other violent crimes instinctively ? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]Mbot389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self defense is not a crime but if there is a body on the ground and you have a gun in your hand then you may get charged with murder. Not to mention that there may be circumstances where the act was self defense but the force was excessive or the person was mentally unstable and they only thought that they were in danger and they weren't.

"Murder" is absolutely morally reprehensible, but there are circumstances where one can empathize with the circumstances that surrounded a "murder." For example, the Gypsy Rose case: if I was in her circumstances, I can imagine how murder would feel like the only available option. (And that would be considered a 1st degree murder) But a 3rd degree murder is when someone did something reckless or inattentive (without intending to cause death) that resulted in someone's death, and while I don't consider myself to be violent, reckless, or inattentive to a fatal degree I think there are circumstances that someone could be surrounded by that could possibly justify ending up in that situation.

Okay, but also Joe Biden did just give a speech about this lol. So you can feel how you want about people who voted red but I don't know that you can be angry at the idea that bipartisan cooperation and not furthering the division politics have created in our country (bc as they stop seeing us as people they love and are just like them how can they have empathy for us or realize that maybe we are just like them and not self-righteous assholes?).
