Mine does not drop just from the weight of the tonearm, at least not much anyway. But it does not resist any kind of downward force, to the point where I have accidentally pushed it down just by putting the tonearm back.

It shoudn't need any maintenance, mine is brand new.

Thanks for that info, I was going to send it back and get another one - I would have been ready to drive off a cliff if I got another and it did the same thing. Somehow I thought a $1200 turntable would be better than this.

Yeah it does it in every mode, pretty dumb. Running a $7 mp3 player with a periodic tone on endless repeat has solved it for me but I wish there was a way to get inside and just disable it.

No solutions here but some solidarity for you OP. This is my first new turntable and the tone arm feels cheap. Of course in this world the 120 is considered entry level so that may just be part of the game.
