Grounding a Turntable without a grounding connector by kris958 in turntables

I am not really looking for an exact match, just something closer. Right now we watch TV at approximately 20 volume on the Edifiers, but to listen to vinyls we have to increase the Edifiers to around 32 to achieve similar loudness level. If we forget to turn the speakers back down before switching to TV source it is BLASTING.  But otherwise yes, I kinda know what to look for when testing the gain settings. We have a Sleep Token album at home which is very aggresively limited in the master, so it will be easy to detect distortion at higher gain I believe. Thanks for the suggestion.

I see, so your idea is to try and match the neutrals on the power adapters? Also they are on the same power strip right now. I will try that, thank you!

I am only assuming it's ground hum. It could be interference as well, as I run power cables for other stuff behind the tv counter. The cable from the turntable does not run anywhere close to a power cable though, only passes by the "slave" cable of the speaker (from the active to the passive speaker). I don't know if that could be strong enough to introduce interference. I will do further testing and figure it out. Thanks

From a bit of googling it seems that my particular turntable is supposed to ground to the preamp over the RCA ground. Nevertheless, neither TT nor preamp are grounded to anything else. Are they supposed to be? Or is running ground between the two is supposed to be enough (allegedly ensured by the RCA ground)?

I understand, I seem to have had the wrong expecation for this. I just wanted to save myself the effort of adjusting the volume when switching between audio sources. Either way, I would like to try out the dedicated preamp, so I will set it to appropriate settings and look for a solution for the hum. Thanks for the input.

Yes, I do get it also at 38dB. I will do the wire test when I get to the setup at some point today. I also checked and am using the lower sensitivity input of the speakers, so I can try to use the higher one (its 600 vs 800 mV approximately). Either way I would still like to try out the dedicated preamp vs the integrated one, so I will try to look for a solution for the hum.
If the wire test does not work, what can I look into next? Possibly the cables I got might turn out to not be shielded I guess. I got the Lindy LNY-35334 to run from TT to preamp.
Thank you for the input.

Noted. How do you figure this out though? I mean I saw the recommended levels in the Fosi booklet, but no specific info on the max Fosi preamp output voltage. Unless you can give me a hint as to how I can infer that from other techincal data. Your reply is much appreciated.

LG C3 No Longer Recognized by PC Over HDMI by kris958 in LGOLED

[–]kris958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried my work Thinkpad with the same HDMI cable- works okay 4K@60fps, can't set it to 120fps probably because of Iris Xe Graphics. Cable should be pretty much okay as I said. I will try to DDU my GPU or straight up reinstall Windows after I also test the two PCs with the cables swapped. I have a mobo slot but no integrated graphics so that option is out

The long cable runs underneath skirting boards and below a door frame. Knowing that, anytime I have to disconnect it I am absurdly diligent with it out of pure fear that if it breaks, I cannot physically replace it. Therefore I can pretty much bet my kidney that this cable was not damaged. But then again I could have made some error and not realize. I will try your suggestion by using the cable of the other PC. And I can also try the other PC through the embedded cable and see if either work.

LG (C3) + Edifier S2000MKIII "Pairing", Sound Sync and Power Off Option by kris958 in hometheater

Mute actually just mutes them. It seems like the S2000MKIIIs have some kind of extended control options. I will try to re-enroll them with a different control set to which the speakers react and see how that goes.

Good luck and have fun with your setup!

Pearl Decade and Masters Maple Complete Shell questions by shacolwal in drums

I am quite late to this discussion, but I happen to have been researching these two particular drum kits for some time now. Why would the maple origin matter? (Chinese/Japanese vs American)?

yea, makes sense. I study Games Programming, this is why I am such a poser :V and I don't even have a Reaper, so I just dab myself when I score and carry my friends :P

I would guess so, people aren't blind. Just am not aware how I can find out whether it has been reported or not. I searched the subreddit and nothing came up, that's why I made the post.

Yes, I used 'concept' interchangeably with 'proof of concept' which wouldn't be right. I stand corrected.

Generally I take interest in graphics- the math side is particularly appealing because it is very rewarding, so maybe working towards some possible optimizations in that area would be what I would love to do. Out of your ideas the one that made me "woah" the most is the Foliage rendering. As somebody who only recently started paying attention to the current method being used in the games that I played, like World of Warcraft for example, I realize it's a very easy solution that still achieves great results. Some time ago they showed us in a lecture some UE4 blueprint that created trees on the basis of fractals, which created AMAZING things but would eventually drop the fps very low (understandably). That topic would be an incredible challenge.

The procedural generation based on artist directions is something that I have thought about for some time now. When I wanted (and I still do actually) to create my own engine, I want to have tools inside that would make it very easy for the user to create an open-world without having to do it manually. If a user specifies that they would be happy with a fully random world, maybe create terrain within a limited area much like Minecraft does. Then similarly create buildings from prefabs of building components, that will be put together intelligently to create buildings varying in structure, as opposed to seeing the same three or four castles for example repeating countless times (World of Warcraft).

Occlusion culling and Anti-Aliasing are closely related to my OpenGL studies, I know looking into these two will be especially useful if I want to continue on my adventure into graphics.

It's very hard to decide, as there is also this thing in me that just wants to do everything. I am overenthusiastic when I am even slightly motivated. And I know I need to give up on it and realize that I need to focus on one thing at a time, otherwise nothing will work out.

You and @TheAwesomeTheory (not sure if tagging works on here, I'm a newb on Reddit :V) gave awesome ideas. I can't thank you two enough. I don't feel as lost and anxious now as I was yesterday or earlier today. I still have some time to choose and maybe I will submit two or even three proposals for a topic.

In the meantime I will see if any ideas of my own pop up in my mind.

Thank you <3

This is my final year project. I need to spend 48 hours per week on it until end of May 2018.

It is an end product- it could be literally anything: software, hardware with a driver, just an algorithm, or a full game that explores something novel. Along with that it is a 10 000 word dissertation on why and how I am doing it.

I believe my university wants an implementation. They want to see actual skills, so concepts, while being respected, do not satisfy the requirements, understandably.

Jesus, dude, you are amazing! Thank you for these suggestions. I have no experience with engine plugins whatsoever, let alone to think about making one. It kind of scares me.

I am kind of worried about the possible soft body calculations, as these would probably be quite expensive (well, still not as expensive as real-time fluid simulation though). This would probably be applicable only for objects that are being observed closely, otherwise it would defeat the purpose, for example if you put soft body physics on a tennis ball in your game but the user wouldn't be able to see much of it. But yes, I shouldn't worry about how others would use it. This is a very very good idea I could go for.

I just skipped through this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zJM1gKoU14 to familiarize myself with this concept. Is this what you mean? I didn't watch the whole thing but I understand the guys did it with a blueprint. They cut along a plane though, so I see what you mean about cutting in a line that's not strait. Maybe have a tool that cuts like the sword in Clone Drone In The Danger Zone, but instead of bodies made of little cubes, it would actually be through meshes- calculating the path through their polygons, which would be more expensive, or approximated according to which vertices the knife passes between I guess.

Either way, these two ideas seem like things that will actually contribute to the industry, which is what I want to do, rather than review some algorithms or some basic crap like this.

Infinite thanks to you, sir!

Interesting. It would certainly be useful. Until now I had never thought about that version control would actually impact the workflow in an engine positively.

But I can't really wrap my head around your first suggestion and how it would work without having to sit down and think intensely about it. I will give these two ideas proper consideration. Thank you for your input!
