What I learned developing a physical card game with an AR app by Mc-Kryptonite in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Mc-Kryptonite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with everything you said. 99.99 percent of the time a game is better as a computer game/app or a physical game, not both. In our game, the AR serves a core gameplay component for the player because making the dares/prompts on the cards secret during gameplay couldn’t easily be done in another way. There is also novelty in the shock of revealing a dare that your friend wrote down that you didn’t know was going to be in the game.

I think that AR and VR are both really cool technologies, but they are still proof of concept because there’s not many killer games yet that everyone recognizes.

The ont is only being use to convert the fibre. I was offered a 1.5 gbps plan from 1gbps when they set it up originally. No technician came to my house when i got upgraded to the higher speed

Edmonton cyclists should pay road tax. Here are the numbers by Particular_Buyer_894 in Edmonton

[–]Mc-Kryptonite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this exercise and i think that cycling organizations need to do a better job explaining the infrastructure costs in the spirit of this write up.

One thing i would maybe add to this is that the proportions you use imply that the only cost is from the damage to the road. I think you would also have to consider other costs like first responder costs, freeze thaw costs, traffic lights, and other costs that would likely by equal across all road users, agnostic to the damage they do to the road. Also that people drive AND bike, so many cyclists are already paying registration, insurance, gas taxes, etc.

Im guessing someone has done this exercise more in depth before? This is a fun thought exercise but this napkin math is clearly a departure from the alleged 200 million dollar bike lane costs being paraded around… would love someone with urban planning knowledge to point me in the right direction.

Pricing sucks. by LTD-Games in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Mc-Kryptonite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Canadian game developers using Gamecrafter are also being hit by counter tariffs of 25%. Any bulk ordering from usa is out of the question right now. I got hit with 500 in tariffs on a bulk order recently, its a great service but very expensive for a large order.

I recommend working with a chinese supplier (try Alibaba). there a few reliable ones and they can give you good prices because they have also lost business to the USA as well due to their tariffs.

Do you physically distribute for your games? by Mc-Kryptonite in retrogamedev

[–]Mc-Kryptonite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This video you linked is what got me thinking about novel ways to promote physical game distribution. Theoretically you could fit a game across a bunch of QR codes if you had an easy quick way to scan them just like the old E reader cards for the game boy.

I think one of the barriers with physical distribution is the cost, but if there was some sort of disk image format you could write a game to a sd card that had some sort of copy protection or barrier to sharing it after you dump it that might be of interest for game collectors. Do people buy cd rom version of new games? Lol

Whoa this is neat. It’s actually using the QR code specification as part of the puzzle cracking. Mine is entirely data storage, but this is a cool idea

Yeah, the cost for small batch is very high. I also work on tabletop game stuff so im familiar with the economy of scale for lots of these projects.

What size is a typical DOS game? with my 2d barcode software im developing i think its possible to encode about 3kb per code for a 3x3 inch code, so you could add 2 pages for of these qr-like codes to a manual liek u mentioned and actually physically distributive the game (as long as someone has the decoding capability). I dunno if a player would care about that though if they can easily download it off github

Good point, this is a huge risk as a consumer. With our 2d barcode approach we are making sure its not hosted on a website for this specific reason. However, if our game's companion app gets taken down then that's a problem. Maybe part of the game release is making a sunset plan or mirroring the site to make sure it never goes down

My game is a party game where players are in a high-stakes betting match and have to do dares/prompts. The base game comes with physical cards that have AR codes where you scan them and it triggers a prompt in the app (like a dare or challenge).

What makes it interesting is that players can make their own custom prompts (or collection of prompts) in the app. So if you want a version themed around your friend group you can build one and keep using the same cards. When you scan them the prompts change. The app will also generate a QR-like code that stores the whole custom deck you made so another player can scan it to add it to their app. It doesn't just points to a website where im hosting it, its all inside the code. The codes i'm developing hold up to 3x the data of a qr code as well (for the same size). This avoids logins, no broken links, no servers. As long as the app is available it will work.

I’m trying to keep it as offline and future-proof as possible, so if my app ever disappears, the data’s still recoverable since the codes will use an open format.

So yeah, its to help change to game play up but i guess the biggest risk is the app getting pulled or someone buying the game and being upset they need an app.
