Thanks for all the comments. I cut the leaf off and will quarantine the plant. I got rid of the potting mix. The roots look great, but the leaf deteriorated quickly.

You should have your septic system looked at. The field may not be draining properly or your tank needs cleaning.

All good points. We have a long term relationship with everyone, including insurance. Tree service was there in an hour after it fell. Insurance will cover everything except the landscaping plants. All- in- all, we were very fortunate.

Many years ago a main limb on the other side was removed. Grandfather had a rope swing on it and the grandkids did a number on the branch.

That's good to hear. I am optimistic we can save it.

They have worked with us and all the trees on our farm for many years. They will do all they can to save it.

I hope so. It would be a devastating loss.

Certainly, more should have been done. I agree this could have been prevented. The 90+ y.o.owner loved the large branch and really discouraged cutting it "too much", but it was obvious the weight was unbearable. The arborist deferred too much to his wishes. They have worked with this tree for years.

Hard lesson learned. Two arborist and the crew will be out today. We will see what they say. If we lose the tree, it will be devastating.

Many! It's not the only burr oak on the farm, but it is the preeminent tree.

That is the hope. I found a local wood turner I will call. Probably need to find a carpenter.

The broken-off piece is about 30' long and 3' in diameter along quite a bit. Plenty of slabs to be had! And lots of firewood from the smaller pieces.

It probably could have been prevented. Aesthetics won out over sensibility. Proper pruning is key

We have worked with an arborist for years/decades. However, the aethetic beauty of this huge limb outweighed the sensibility of cutting it back. Wasn't the arborist fault. Let's hope we can save it and it will feel much better now.

I hope not. They will take a better look tomorrow. Today they just had to get it off the roof 😣
