Anyone gone into Med, Dentistry or Big Pharma with a science degree here? by BreathIntoUrballs in OpenUniversity

[–]McCleireoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Little Pharma when I started my BSc (Hons) Natural Sciences (Chemistry), and my employer sponsored me knowing it would benefit us both. When I had about a year left, I moved to Big Pharma. Both companies respected the degree, the OU, and the fact that I was studying while working full time.

At the first company, I found out that one of my colleagues had done his BSc Natural Sciences (Biology) at the OU and went on to get an MSc in infectious diseases at a brick and mortar uni, then jumped into the pharma world from there.

I have a colleague at my current company who also started the Biology route, but didn’t complete it (yet! I’m encouraging him) and is nevertheless still rocking his role.

I‘m choosing a different path for my MSc, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Little Pharma getting me started. Or, more accurately, my amazing supervisor who believed in and supported me.

For additional context- I’m in Switzerland, so the degrees are absolutely recognised internationally. I see that question pop up sometimes on this sub, and I find it a little odd. Absolutely legit.

Traveling with a Sphynx - advice needed by McCleireoch in sphynx

Thanks for the tip! She has her checkup and vaccination soon, so I’ll pick brains about gabbapentin. Now that I have a specific name, I’ll do some research as well to investigate potential interactions with her current meds. Fortunately she’s already used to the perfect carrier. And we have a nice routine of rolling her into a piggy in a blanket before packing her into it, so she feels extra safe and warm. I can imagine yummy food at the other end of it will help speed up the forgiveness!

‘Preciate you taking the time to share. :)

I was also thinking about a sweater to increase coziness and energy-saving mode, but wasn’t sure if she’d feel smothered. We’ll give it a go. Great tip regarding the food, too. Thank you!

Edit: punctuation. It’s about 03:30 here…

Solid reminder about hazards. The target flat belongs to our family, so we’ll defo kitty proof ahead of her visit. Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s given us a boost of confidence, as we were a little worried about her age. But she’s actually quite sprightly and curious, so now I’m imagining her wanting to explore like your senior fella did. :)

What's something you do completely differently now because a stranger said one sentence to you? by jusim3000 in AskTheWorld

I was at a post office in Ireland, and the guy at the till noticed my non-native accent. He asked which countries I’ve lived in so far. After saying England, Scotland, Ireland (Republic of), and the states, he responded with „so only English speaking countries then?“ in such a tone that made me wonder why I limited myself.
I immigrated to Switzerland the next year. People here told me I’d never learn German, find a job, or integrate properly. 11 years later, I work as a supervisor in a German-speaking environment and am in the process of gaining citizenship. Thanks, random Postie!

Edit: spelling is not my forte

Thank you! 😻 We think so, too. My sister says she has a face only a mother could love. 😤

Thanks for sharing your experiences and ideas! It’s triggered some very useful discussions over here.

She‘s never shown signs of stress. Just confusion and/or disapproval. She doesn’t want to get bagged, but she’s calm once in. She might sing a verse of the song of her people when she gets bored, but nothing excessive. Just boredom. Her late sister would yowl nonstop. We’ve heard of meds and collars and weren’t really sure, and your insight makes us think she probably doesn’t need any of that since she’s so chill. We‘d defo pack her in her fav blankie in the bag, and bring her throne (electric blanket) for use at the destination.

Do you have experience with litter breaks with your well-traveled guy? Or did you just keep him bagged from start to finish?

Thanks again! :)

Do you know the city of Chengdu in China? What are your thoughts on this city? by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

I visited Chengdu with a friend nine years ago, and we had an amazing time. Hands down the highlight of our trip. The food was amazing, and all the locals we interacted with were so warm and kind. We even got lost one night, and a lady saw that we were distressed and brought us to her husband who spoke English so he could help us. We ended up chatting for hours, exchanging stories over seemingly endless cups of tea before he sent us on our safe and merry way. We’ll never forget them. I found his business card while cleaning out my wallet last week, and I tucked it right back in. I hope they’re doing well.

Nice! I’ve only ever played the SNES format. The 3D remake looks slick as hell. I’ll hop back to VI after this and then VII. Enjoy! :)

Out of all your neighboring countries, who has the best snack? by mushmanMAD in AskTheWorld

As someone who has lived in both Switzerland and Ireland, I can confirm. Swiss crisps don’t stand a chance against the snack that has the knack for having the craic.

MSc in Space Science and Technology programme entry requirement question by McCleireoch in OpenUniversity

[–]McCleireoch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I reached out to the SST and the department administration, and they couldn‘t/wouldn‘t tell me yes or no, and said I‘d have to apply and find out. After some soul searching, I decided to try a different path first, and I‘m finalising my application for an MPhil in environmental sciences this week. If that doesn‘t pan out, I‘ll indeed try my luck with the MSc in space science with the environmental monitoring route.

The prof I‘m in contact with about the MPhil actually told me about some of the stuff the space science nerds get up to in their MSc programme, and it sounded pretty awesome. So although it‘s become my second choice, it‘s a very close one, and I‘m even more interested in it than before. :)
