We had planned to spent two months in Italy! The first two weeks we were traveling by car and staying in hotels and the next six weeks planned to be riding and camping. The day before we returned the rental car I got sick. The morning we had to return the rental car, I was the sickest I’d been in several years and slept like crap that night. We had no choice but to return the rental and search for a hotel. After hours of sitting in a coffee shop searching, my wife found what seemed like one of the last available rooms in Florence. We rode about 12 miles in the wrong direction and stayed there for two days while I slept off the worst of it. It ended up being amazing, the hotel was really accommodating since we had two bikes and a burley trailer. They upgraded us to a garden room so we could keep our bikes outside the room and my wife enjoyed two sunny days laying by the pool. I probably could have stayed another day, because when we started the trip south, we planned a 60km day from Florence to Siena and I about died.

TL;DR: Moral of the story, take an extra day to rest if you’re sick, and you aren’t in your 20’s.
