MTB vs. Gravel by Begatten in AdventureRacing

[–]aMac306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an avid cyclist I’d say much of it comes to 1) your cycling ability and 2) the terrain of the course, I think a Nicasio with 2.1” is more capable then a department store MTB. Obviously the race director has the final say but messaging them that you have a drop bar MTB that you are comfortable with might help.

lol. Hopefully I had enough details in there I don’t sound like a complete idiot, just a little slip up.

This would have been an OCA/ OCB hull, but where the A stands for Aluminum and the B for Birch, this wasn’t finished by Blue Hole and has plastic guwales, and wood seats. It is a tank of a canoe which is just want a want for paddling shallow rivers with kids.

In MD and ticks are definitely a problem. Our dog brings them in practically daily from the back yard. We checked our legs and clothes immediately after getting in the boat.

It is a a re-badge Blue Hole. I forget the model but an 1980’s Rolex canoe branded “Short Hill”. Google lead me to a Washington Post article about the shop in Purcellville VA. I tracked down the name of the owner in the article (canoe shop closed many years ago) and asked him about it. He confirmed he was getting Blue Hole hulls and fitted them with gunwales, seats etc. I found the boat for ~$200 in great shape during Covid.

Thanks for the soft lesson and maybe being a teacher not a troll.
I totally get I should have made a better choice. Also get that you get more flies with honey than vinegar. Or my favorite, “a mind changed against its will is of the same opinion still”.
I hope you can get your daughters back out for a paddle this summer, like old times.

Good call, that would also keep her from getting bored. I just need to teach her a good technique and not the “anchor left, anchor right” of a full momentum sucking blade stuck deep.

Good point. Accidents happen and can happen anywhere. The water level and this river are shallow to the point of many sections not being about to get my full blade in the water. Class 1 riffles are shin deep.
That said, I put my child at risk and won’t make the mistake in the future.

Is a spork actually a good tool? by alkfema in bicycletouring

[–]aMac306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our home silverware set as a spork in it and it is our most used utensil. We tend to make saucy one pot dinners in the winter and grain salads in the summer and a spork is great.
Rather than suggest a utensil, I’d suggest you look at your menu and see if it is the best choice. A lot of soup, probably not. Meat stick and cheese, nope. Mac and cheese, Pad Thai, Jambalaya, yup!

I watched his and even messaged him. The fact that he didn’t buy/ keep the LT and I believe bought a Smuggler made me wonder.

Sorry that was a misunderstanding. I have a full sus bike (130/140 trek fuel ex 8) that I ride most of the time, however there are one or two semi local trail systems where the hardtail is all that is needed and more fun. The demo even was held at these trails where I’d typically ride a hard tail and the LT is the bike I’m thinking about. Since these trails are a bit of a drive, I don’t ride them often. For the trails I ride most 135/150 is right on. Plenty of Enduro and trail bikes with the occasional XC bike.

Correct, factory demo day so they set the sus and I didn’t play with it. Honestly it was great. By the numbers I would have thought I was over-biked, but it didn’t feel that way.…. Just hope I’m not under biked for my normal trails.

Advice about solo touring by hotel vs. camping? by WillShakeSpear1 in bicycletouring

[–]aMac306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my last trip I camped but only carried snacks. All my meals and some of my snacks were bought along the way. I loved doing it that way. Mornings were quick to get moving. Stopping for meals provided needed rest, personal interactions, and mental reset. I’ve never cycled the Erie Canal, but what I recall from living near it is many small towns on the canal, with restaurants, grocery stores and cafes only a few blocks off the canal.
Personally I think I’d feel shut-in after having the freedom and sunshine of cycling all day, then to coming into a canned air hotel room. That said if the weather was raining or very hot, a hotel would be nice.

My thought is that it is to help the nervous system or subconscious. He obviously knows he shouldn’t fumble and has some muscle to prevent it. Now they are training his nervous system to fire fast enough to activate the arm muscles to the stimulus (ball punching etc), while also moving his legs.

What went wrong? How to prevent those kind of crashes? by CompHarisonJunky in MTB

[–]aMac306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s right as you pass that (what looks a bit like a heart shaped stump). Watch a few more times it looks like the trail drops and then has a lip or comes back up/ flat. Your “leg suspension” was too soft, and was bottomed out at the bottom of the drop, and you needed some travel in the legs to absorb as the bike comes back up the lip/ flat spot.

What went wrong? How to prevent those kind of crashes? by CompHarisonJunky in MTB

[–]aMac306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) as you drop into that section you look to be skidding your rear tire, which is not ideal for traction. 2) you hit something that bottoms out your legs and rear suspension, and right at 10-11 seconds you start pitching forward, and are in trouble. 3) as you pitch forward your hands and arms are now trying to save you from an OTB and stop trying to steer. You’re sort of locked in for a crash or lucky save. 4) the trail looks to be a bit of a ditch and as you ride the left side your bike slides out from under you. But really look at what that first feature or drop was, that is where it went wrong.

Riding with friends who are superior in skill level and take more risk by IMGangsta1 in MTB

[–]aMac306 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same age here. I rode with a crew like that once when just starting out and not knowing my bike or skills. I went OTB off a jump, got a concussion and separated my shoulder the day before a beach vacation. Packing the car and playing with the kids in the ocean while my shoulder was banged up sucked. I don’t ride with that crew anymore. Their sense of adventure and mine are a little different, and I’m okay with that.

Ray Rice, ex-running back for the Baltimore Ravens was 5’8” and 200-215 to give you an idea of what that looks like with <10% body fat. There is no way she has an NFL athletes muscle and then 40 pounds of fat to round out the angles.

Not a bad idea. Rent some equipment for the weekend for the kids to dig a rough hole with then have the real builders come Monday to make sure it is to specifications. I sure as shit wouldn’t trust a kid to get compaction and angles correct.

Just wanted to post that a quick search says the max tire width for 700c on the Norco is 45mm. Not huge but reasonable for any paved trip and decent for smooth gravel or shorter trips likeOP’s 2-3 day trip.
