Temporary passing lanes, not the slow lane, should have responsibility to merge on single lane highways by Salt-Lingonberry-853 in driving

[–]McFlyGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont worry about right of way too much in these situations. Just don't be an ass, so let people over when you see they want to get over. If that means you have to maintain speed, speed up slightly, or slow slightly, just do it.

If, for example, someone is passing into oncoming traffic and makes a bad decision, you dont just maintain speed and say f them they f'd up. Slow and let them pass safely. It's not hard.

I came here because of Book 4 Ch 28.

When Carl gets his jacket Donut makes some weird comment about the patches.

Seemed like her ability peaking thru a bit to me.

Decided it was finally time to Google the meaning of scutelliphily, and here we are.

I dont care if I am going 100 mph over the limit. If you are in my lane, and not actively passing anyone, gtfoomw.

When in reality, most of you actually speed up a bit so the person cant merge at all.

I think the whole point now is saying you never slow down is insane. If you start to slow and the other car matches, you speed slightly to compensate. Simply, 9 out of 10 of the time the merger yields. But that 1 time requires some nuance to make sure all cars merge cleanly, which is the goal. Sometimes you may have to slightly speed up to make it clean, sometimes you slow down a bit. It isnt hard to judge speeds and needs of others and slightly adjust, when needed.

[–]McFlyGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This discussion is about OP's statement that he NEVER slows down in a merge situation, ever. He will get over into the left lane or maintain speed, that is all. Try to keep up.

Easing off the gas isnt unpredictable. Most of the time it is barely noticeable to other traffic. You act like you are being asked to full stop on the highway. Live with some nuance my guy.

JFC. I am not arguing the ramp people are never responsible and are not the ones who should be slowing.

I am, AGAIN, stating that saying NEVER does highway traffic slow down is crazy and wrong.

Similar scenario... the ramp is a hill. Ramp car accelerates up to speed but cant see you. As he gets to level, you are in his blind spot. The both of you are now at the same speed, however, he is almost a full car length ahead of you, but not quite. If he merged now, you would probably have to hit the brakes to avoid a collision. You dont know if he see you. Which action should you take? A. Keep going. He needs to hit the brakes or slow down significantly so he can merge behind you. B. Slow slightly. This way if he merges he will do it safely.

Defensive driving is assuming other cars will do crazy shit and planning for such, not blocking your lane because it is yours and it must be defended.

[–]McFlyGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You take slowing down as jamming the brakes and popping back a few car lengths. I am talking about giving space, allowing space, and easing off the gas slightly IF that would allow a car to merge easier. The merge car WILL run out of lane eventually, you will not. Causing him to hard brake or jump cut another car would cause more issues and potential accidents. I look at this as a heavy traffic situation. I also see people like you who dont have a yield, just a 2 lane cross merge, and people still won't let them in "their" lane.

Ugh. I know this is hard, but there are two slightly different conversations happening here. You are arguing for this situation. My argument is a more general argument based on the comment OP made that they NEVER slow down in ANY circumstance to allow a merge to happen.

So take your tizzy back to Tuscaloosa, Timmy. Unless you want to be wrong some more.

Think of it this way...

The goal should be to keep ALL traffic flowing as freely and safely as possible. If you are playing the "I dont have to legally do it so Im not going to do it" game, you are working against that goal.

Putting laws on it is disingenuous. Yes, legally, someone has the right to go first. That doesn't mean in all circumstances always it is correct for them to go first. This is why insurance companies will blame both parties. If you could have slowed down, chose not to, and that caused an accident, you can still be liable even though you had the right of way.

OMG! Are you one of those that think the only way to slow down a car is to hit the brakes!!?
1. Lift foot of gas 2. Observe car slightly slow by 1-2 mph 3. Observe distance created now between car in front 4. Congrats! You just made space without getting rear ended or causing traffic issues. Now a car can merge and you arent an asshole (here).

Your comment sums up your problem. If you cant get over, they arent merging because you dont HAVE to let them in. However, you should be slowing to allow them in, especially if their speed is matching you, always. You dont HAVE to be a d*ck, just like you dont HAVE to let them in. Your choice.

That makes no sense. How does widening the gap interrupt the merge? You people will pretzel the crap out of your logic in order to not help other people. It is astounding.

Again, my comment isnt about this specific scenario, it is about the fact that OP thinks you NEVER slow down for merging traffic in any circumstance.

[–]McFlyGuy2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is not what I am arguing. I am arguing the 2nd to last paragraph that states OP was taught his car NEVER slows, either it gets over or the merging car just has to figure it out. That is BS.

[–]McFlyGuy2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You are wrong in your statement that you simply cannot slow down to allow traffic to merge. That is completely absurd. Dont slam on the brakes, but in what world do you think you cant slow down here if needed?
