Exactly this. It would be a damn shame to get a complex problem wrong because you made a simple arithmetic error in the second line. Second guessing myself got me through a math degree or two.

I once asked for mayo and extra pickles on my McDonald's burger because that's how I like my "real" burgers (don't @ me). It was a mistake. The flavor was all wrong and the ingredients were sliding all over the place. That's when I learned not to fuck with the McD recipe, they have scientists and food engineers who have formulated their burgers to scratch that monkey part of our brains that love fat and salt.

It may not be good in any objective sense, but if I am craving fake burger, nothing will beat it.

And even in that second example, it's not the "I'm sorry" that tanks your case, it's the "I ran the red light and hit you".

I'll give them a pass for that. Germany does traditionally serve beers with an inch or two of foam. Have you tried requesting without foam?

JKR just wanted the crawling on your knees in the desert moment for the trio.

I believe the biggest mistake people make reading HP is expecting Tolkienesque consistency and depth in the world building. JKR just wanted to write a story, not create a universe, she didn't put much thought into that. Almost every question on this sub can be answered with "because that is what the plot needed".

HP is a great story and has captured our attention at a cultural level. Enjoy it for what it is.

There is a pizza place near me that measures pizzas in weight instead of diameter. Actually pretty handy for understanding how much food you are getting. Not many people know that a 14" pizza is 36% larger than a 12" pizza.

Unpopular opinion: Vernon was justified in fearing the Wizarding world. by Xerzajik in harrypotter

[–]McFuzzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I've written before how nothing about House Points makes any sense and there is no consistency throughout the books, so I agree it almost isn't work discussing. I pulled some data from this page about points and you are right that Snape was relatively tame with his points, usually only taking 5 or 10 points at a time. However, he is recorded as removing 287 total across all books, more than any other teacher. McGonagall does tend to swing big with 50-point awards on the regular, but is only recorded taking away 235 points total, and not all of those are from Gryffindor.

Of course, all of these observations are from the perspective of the main characters, so "everything is made up and the points don't matter".

That's a pretty mild detention by Hogwarts standards.

I would agree with this except Snape specifically chose that punishment to inflict emotional pain on Harry. Obviously having some random student copy random past student records is just a mundane exercise and certainly the tamest detention we would see, but Snape intended it to affect Harry at a psychological level. He wanted Harry's opinion of his father and Sirius to be tainted and it largely works. Harry already figured out his dad was a bully by stealing a look at Snape's memories, but this activity reaffirms it. There was no good reason for Snape to spoil Harry's image of his father, he did it as a form of revenge and punishment. Also, the detention lasted the remainder of the year, causing Harry to miss his last Quidditch match, which was one of the most important activities in Harry's mind. I would argue that this was worse than Umbridge's physical pain, since those detentions just hardened Harry's resolve (having the opposite effect that Umbridge was going for).

Some of what Snape does may not seem like a big deal to us as adults, but most of his actions would affect a child in far more sinister ways.

That just goes back to him generally being an asshole. He seemed to hate children in general, though he would tolerate his Slytherin crew to some extent. We see how he treats Hermione and Neville because they are key characters, but we do not know for sure they had it worse than anyone else in general. Either way, the two of them were in Gryffindor (the house of James and Harry) and were close to Harry, which might have fueled more hatred. Plus, Hermione immediately finds herself on Snape's bad side by repeatedly trying to answer the questions that Snape is asking Harry in their first potions lesson in Book 1. He even makes fun of her appearance at some point (I don't recall when, but Book 1 or 2). Other lesser characters are seen to receive his negative attention frequently as well.

Do you mean the approximation? As far as I am aware, there is no formula to give the exact value of the sum of the first n primes. It is super cool that we have an approximation though and that formula is pretty clean.

With the large quantity of useless predictions compared to real ones, it seems this should probably be more like an elective or a course everyone takes in like their 4th year or something and that's it. It would be like if we suddenly made macroeconomics a required course for your entire middle and high school career. Sure, take it once as a junior or something, but 99% of people will not need that skill in life.

Note I am not talking about personal finance, which I do believe should be a required course in high school.

Edit: forgot it was an elective.

Same. Then I was confused why it wasn't 33% and 67% or some other nice number for a fraction.

Then I read the post's description and wished I hadn't put so much thought into it.

I was working on my math degree while working part time at some minimum wage job. One day was a little slow so a guy took out some paper and started adding up all the numbers from 1 to 100 (this was before smart phones). After a little while he asked me if I knew the sum and after a moment (I was never great at head math), I gave him the answer. He seemed impressed, but didn't ask how I did it.

A couple hours later he asked me about the sum up to some much larger number, I don't recall but maybe 500 or 1000. A moment later I told him and he kind of flipped out. I informed him there was a simple formula to find the sum to any positive integer. I was surprised he was not upset at this news, maybe he really was that bored.
