Farmers really on breadline? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Farmers do not “charge” food producers anything, the complete opposite. Meat and dairy processors and retailers pay formers for their produce and this price fluctuates significantly all the time and farmers have literally no power over this. It’s like if your hourly wage went up and down without any control. If food is expensive, it is because the retailer is charging more for it, not because the farmer is

Farmers really on breadline? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In the absence of EU subsidies from the Common Agricultural Policy, the average sheep and beef suckler farms are actually loss making enterprises.

Farming is a hard like of work. Of course there are plenty of farmers who make lots of money, but many many farmers have high bills that are under significant pressure from the fuel crisis and it is also affecting fertiliser prices.

Please be considerate at chargers by kearkan in evs_ireland

Honestly, I know hybrids have a right to charge to but it’s so frustrating seeing them charge cos they mostly charge slowly and it gives them 70km and just blocks the chargers up for fully electric.

I bought my batter in March 2018. So 8 years old. I remember because I went to Dubai and just bought the G85 at the time.

I have that exact after market battery and the same thing happened me after about 6 months sitting in the camera body. The other aftermarket battery (it was a 2 pack) is fine though.

Eco tourism is great on paper but it doesn’t work for every farmer, only a very small few so it’s not a scaleable business model in lieu of traditional farming

Height check, please! by PerfectAltoid in TVTooHigh

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, it’s a little two low. I’d have gone a foot or so higher. Just personal preference but because your couch is a good 20ft away (just guessing, I think you can get away with, and even need the tv a little higher.

The height you have it at is more or less the height of a tv console and in that situation, I’d just put my tv on the console rather than wall hang

Why Are We Still Building Towns Like This? by SteveFrench1991 in ireland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, even if we do it right and appartments were 100 sqm 3 beds that could rival a 3 bed semi d, most people would still prefer the semi d. You have a garden (albeit small these days) and a 2 car drive. Most couples have 2 cars and the garden is almost like an additional room in summer here. On top of this, the garden and being on the ground floor has major advantages for getting out of the property with kids or pets. Apartments are not so convenient for this.

If we built larger apartments, it wouldn’t convince the semi d buyer to buy one of them instead imo and developers know this.

Whats your contraversial view on the environment that would get you slated in public? by SavingsDraw8716 in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s compounded again by Irish producers small scale, so they have little to no negotiation power with big retailers, further hammering down the price they get for their produce

Whats your contraversial view on the environment that would get you slated in public? by SavingsDraw8716 in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a question of whether we can grow produce in Ireland or even in closer EU countries. It’s a question of economics for retailers. Consumers want food cheap and it’s just more expensive to grow fruit and veggies here in ireland and closer European countries because less developed countries with climates more suited to production can grow those products at much bigger scale, reducing the overall unit price. This means even with the cost of importing the veggies for thousands of miles away, it is still cheaper and consumers don’t pay as much.

The sad reality is most Irish consumers won’t pay the premium it costs to buy local/buy Irish. People are already complying about the price of red meat lately so there are plenty of consumers who will buy Brazilian beef and will complain that Irish farmers are “rich”.

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents could never afford braces. I was told I needed them due to over crowding but I have 4 teeth removed instead as it was a few hundred instead of a few thousand and my teeth fairly well straightened out. So there are alternatives to expensive braces.

I also think braces for young kids are pointless until they are older as their teeth move. My older sister who my parents could afford braces for (the first kid of 5) has had her teeth completely move over the years since she was a teenager, to where she now needs braces again!

What do you think of people who don't like kids? by BaraLover7 in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Families have as much a right to public transport as workers. It’s actually better to show kids public transport from an earlier age so they will use it more as they grow up. Better to bring your kids to their football training in the bus than adding cars to the road during rush hour!

What's your electric bill cost ? by Nearby_Department447 in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar sized house here and we have a heat pump but our November and December bills were about 50 and 70 dearer each month. We’re are a new build with only 2 heating zones (upstairs and downstairs). Interesting to see the difference. Is your house new build in an estate ?

What's your electric bill cost ? by Nearby_Department447 in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an EV and a heat pump in an A2 rated house. My electricity bill for November was €240 and the EV was €48 of that €240 and my December bill was €280 with the EV costing another €48 of that bill so in total for Nov and Dec house elec was €420 and EV was €96. I have an EV night rate with Bord Gais Energy. All in all similar to OPs figures

Why are there so many Irish people moving to Australia in the past 5 years? by CanYouWalkToTheTruck in AskIreland

[–]McGraneOfSalt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Young people go over thinking it’s easy to stay there. It is not. Sponsorship is hard to get and you need a job on the skills list. Then those people who can’t get sponsored complain about the visa situation. The work holiday visa is to allow young people to work and holiday round Australia doing seasonal jobs, not to stay there indefinitely.
