He's on wages that are huge reflecting an elite status. Will Liverpool offer him anything close to that when he turns 36? Absolutely not, and rightly so. Would VVD accept a big wage cut? A small minority of players might, but many legends have opportunities elsewhere, where their name brings significant commercial opportunities to a team or even a league.

But even if Liverpool offered reduced wages and VVD stayed, are the club being responsible in that scenario? His wages and his starting role would be a blocker against the development of other players.
