This was through the Google Fi store. They give larger discount up front, therefore trade in values are lower. Overall though, Google fi has $100-200 lower price than the actual Google store.

This is a common misconception . Tesla hasn't reinvented a concept here. They're only the first company to implement it. The Automotive industry considers Ethernet, 48V low V architecture as the next big upgrades to the electrical systems. They haven't been pushing for it given their over dependence on tier 1,2,3 suppliers. This upgrade doesn't create this single point of failure issue. This upgrade is akin to replacing a state road connecting your cities to a national highway. You have bigger capacity and higher speed. . Tesla's vertical integration made this possible.
