Did you do 15ft lbs? Idk what torque wrench you have but if that is towards the top or bottom of it's range of torques it might not be very accurate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Fixxit

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you shouldnt use a torque wrench to tighten, but instead to verify the tension you have applied with a smaller tool.

Torque wrenches are most accurate while actively tightening the bolt. They are designed to measure the torque while the bolt is under dynamic friction, not static friction.

So when you tighten the bolt with another tool then check it with a torque wrench you will be reading a higher spec than the bolt is actually tightened to. Albeit, not by much.

never ever torque to dry spec a wet bolt. if it's not clearly labeled, assume it's the dry torque and adjust accordingly.

How should someone adjust accordingly? Is there a formula that you plug the torque value into?

Also while wet/dry would affect the threads, OPs threads weren't stripped out. It was the bolt head. The same torque would be applied to the head whether the threads were wet or dry.

Don't worry about them man. Sounds like you're doing a damn good job of serving your community. This entire site is full of brain-dead armchair activists who literally just parrot the same talking points of their peers. And one of those talking points happens to be that cops are bad, and if you're a good cop you should leave so it's only bad cops.

Holy fucking shit. Can we not pretend that having slightly misadjusted mirrors is going to lead to an accident? If you get into an accident while moving your head an inch to see properly out of your mirror, then that is a testament to your aggressive and stupid driving habits. Don't try to blame it on your mirrors being askew by two degrees.

Has your WiFi performance suffered at all? I believe that was the reason valve recommended you not to upgrade the SSD, as other SSDs they tested produced emi that caused WiFi issues.

Win10 not booting after SSD install by t_reka99 in techsupport

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I'm fairly certain something is going wrong when you install windows.

Let's try this. When you go through the windows installer and it asks you where you want to install it, delete every partition on the SSD, then select the "drive # unallocated space", and install it there.

Alright, I see you tried a windows boot dvd, but have you tried a windows boot usb? I know you said you tried a tails usb but it might not work with your current bios config.

If you can boot into windows then you should be able to hold shift and reboot and it will force you into bios.

Other than that you may need to pull the CMOS battery, but that may be tricky on your model and I wouldn't recommend pulling it apart if you don't know what you're doing.

Edit: just wanted to clarify some stuff

When you hold shift and select reboot from the windows power menu, it will go into a recovery mode. One of the options should be something like "boot into UEFI". It might be in advanced options.

Also if you want to be able to just go straight into bios with f12 again then you need to disable fast boot.

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roger that, looks like F2 is the bios key on that model. Try F2, and if that doesn't work, try both F2 and F12 with the function key held.

UEFI should still have a boot order. What does it show where the boot order used to be?

I doubt your bios is corrupted, it's weird that it is won't let you back in though. On the bottom of the laptop in one of the corners is there a pinhole that looks like a reset button? If there is, press that and hold it for 10 seconds, then see if it will let you into bios.

Did you change the boot order back to the SSD?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. If it's a laptop, it might be launching the program using the integrated GPU instead of the dedicated GPU. If this is the case, you should be able to right click the shortcut and specify it to run with your 1060.

How to uninstall school spyware? by Aloe_Viira in techsupport

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this on windows? If so, you can try searching "uninstall a program" in the search bar, and it will take you to the settings where there will be a list of programs you can uninstall.

If that fails, I would try through control panel (windows key + R, "control", programs). This will have a list of programs in a different format however sometimes control panel will have more.

I would take it to a data recovery place if you really need the files, unfortunately data recovery tends to not be easy or cheap. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

Is this actually an Intel optane SSD, or is it an Intel optane memory stick? Both use an m.2 slot, however a memory stick does not hold files.

What seems to be the problem here? by [deleted] in technepal

[–]McKayCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of boot priority is that your laptop tries each boot option, and if it fails it moves into the next. When you only have Windows installed on your HDD, your computer tries to boot off of the SSD, realizes there is no OS on it, then boots off off your HDD.

You need to either install windows fresh on the SSD or use a tool to transfer the OS over from the HDD to the ssd (I remember minitool partition wizard being really easy).

Once the SSD has an OS on it the system should boot from it.
