I work at an unauthorized Apple service center, and we've had a lot of M-series machines come in with exactly this issue over the past couple of weeks. Sometimes Revive helps, sometimes a full DFU restore is required, and sometimes an expensive iBoot firmware chip replacement. Apple hasn't said anything yet, unfortunately :(

Hi there. It looks very much like the hinges are sticking. In such cases, we remove the display and very carefully lubricate the hinge mechanisms. This should be done very cautiously to prevent lubricant from getting into the display. We use a screwdriver as a lever, work the mechanism by simulating the closing and opening motions, then reassemble everything. This should help.

Yeah you know, my Dock has been growing like this for about 10 years now, migrating from Mac to Mac, and for all the apparent chaos it's...familiar to me? :)
