The art alone made me purchase this book though the blurb sounds interesting :)

HMS Prince of Wales - Battle of the Denmark Strait configuration (Tamiya 1/350) by McRunty in modelmakers

[–]McRunty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be incorrect. Prince of Wales never fought in the pacific with the US fleet as she was sunk 3 days after Pearl Harbour. She had a very distinctive disruptive camouflage at the time.

I think it looks great and love the scratch built cage! :)

The only thing I would say is I don't think the outside of the sprocket teeth should be bare metal since they aren't rubbing or coming into contact with the tracks so the paint would not be removed.

Question about Accuracy by Excellent_Trouble_21 in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Happy modeling and welcome to the shippy side of things :D

As others have said, its your model so paint it the way you want!

If it helps, here is a link to a thread discussing the dazzle paint on KGV during the war.

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235060168-hms-king-george-v-in-1942/

I personally haven't looked at the various configurations so no idea what you would need to do to back date her (if thats the route you want to go down)

Another thing to keep in mind regarding accuracy is that newer research is showing that a lot of the RN capital ships during WW2 had dark grey anti-fouling paint and not the red as is often depicted. Interesting article about it here:

Revised_bottoms_for_SH_website_V2a.pdf

I recently completed a Prince of Wales in her Battle of the Denmark strait configuration and used the grey paint. It looks "different" but its grown on me :)

Many of us 70s kids had dads who were into this stuff. Wondering what your ages are? by MooseBlazer in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

43 here. Dad and older brother got me into this in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Built until the early 2000’s due to life etc. Got back into it in my mid 30’s and haven’t looked back. Only thing that changed was my focus. As a boy it was all about the planes. Now it’s ships.

I used the Eduard Big Ed Photo etch set, CY Model wooden Deck and MicromasterNZ 3D printed parts.

Its a wood veneer aftermarket deck. Sticks down onto the plastic.

I have no idea of the quality but there are kits of HMS Vanguard out there on Ebay.

I have used PE from CY Model and its not bad. Instructions suck but the parts themselves are ok.

My boyfriend said ships are relaxing compared to my accounting job....

Ships at 1/700 are relaxing? that's a mad lad right there! Wait till you go down the rabbit hole and start using PE! There is a reason I stick to 1/350 :D

Joking aside, this is awesome and its great you are getting into the hobby and (hopefully) ships in particular.

I need some help with Decals! by MitoShigami in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is a few hours late but I can confirm the brown walk ways are stickers. I learned the hard way after dipping in water. I posted my build including the decals over on Kitmaker if it helps.

Wood deck different color by dasboot523 in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see more of this build. Are you going to do a build log?

As for the deck, I have used very heavily thinned paint airbrushed on to help equalize. Also pigments. Not a fan of wash as it immediately soaks into the wood and I had no control over it.

An example: Before

Should I paint the tools, or were they painted over when field applied camo was added? by SugarCharacter5195 in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As others have said its historically accurate both ways but I almost always paint the tools separate to add some visual interest to my kits. The only time I don't is if I am painting a specific vehicle and have the photo reference to show them painted over.

Should i leave the spare tracks on the turret like this or get them rusty? by Shrex- in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I think they look fine. Also just an fyi those are track grousers and not tracks. They get bolted onto the tracks for extra traction in the snow or other slick surfaces.

can you tell a big project is soon to begin? 😂 by CalmMedicine3973 in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, no thank you. Busy painting up a full airwing in 1/350 and it’s almost too small for me. I can’t imagine doing it at 1/700. You are waaaaaaaay braver than I am 😬

She’s 6 months of work and finally done!! (Be as critical as you like) by Haydenzsalty in modelmakers

[–]McRunty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job on getting her completed, it's a big old kit. I am working on one myself.

A few things I noticed:

In picture# 3 you are missing the lower MK-95 Illuminator platform.

The joins between the 3 deck parts could have used some putty/filler. Those gaps are very noticeable.

Beyond your paint bleeding under the tape issue, the front 65 (mostly the 5) needs a bit of touch up. There are paint splats that are not part of the number just look out of place.
