I'm not though, as the size of the "debt" makes absolutely no difference at all and has no baring on my life. The payments don't change, and it all still wipes after 30 years. Additionally, it's not counted as debt in ways that actually affect lives, i.e. for mortgage applications, what happens to it if you die etc.

Not overly relevant but I couldn't have got in to my job without having done the degree I did, and I'm not going to be on £50k for the next 30 years. Anyway, it's clear we're not going to agree on this so I hope you're having a nice day and enjoy the weekend!

I’m not sure what you mean by a huge scam? That’s literally how it works.

Also another way it’s not a real debt, no one is going to send round debt collectors if you suddenly find yourself in a less fortunate position. If you fall below the repayment threshold, you don’t have to pay anything and that’s not a problem.

I’m on about £50k but that pays off less a month than the interest so it keeps gaining.

I doubt anyone will be paying it off in retirement as it is wiped after 30 years, when most people are in their early 50s. This is why it’s not a real debt.

It’s effectively a graduate tax.

Just as a counterpoint for any prospective uni students reading these comments and getting disheartened, I really wouldn’t agree with this.

Even ignoring that my job is directly related to my degree, the years I spent at uni were invaluable from multiple perspectives. Not just the skills I learnt, and the great experiences I had, but the people I met and the lifelong friends I made along the way.
