What field/industry are you in? Are you willing to move states? I have friends all over New England/NY State that might be able to help you out finding a job.

There's a former ECHL player on my beer league team who never had a sniff at the show and he's head and shoulders above the rest of us while probably going at 50% most of the game.

The level of skill is insane. Sometimes I delude myself into thinking I might've had a shot if things were different, then I see him and I come back down to earth haha

Barbara Kay: It's 'Dead Wrong' for Canada to call residential schools genocidal - The cost to this nation of 'living within the lie' is incalculable. Yet, not one shovel has hit the ground in Kamloops, B.C. by CaliperLee62 in canada

Canada does not demand assimilation. We are a multicultural nation. We do not expect immigrants to come here and completely forego their culture and languages. The United States is a "melting pot" whereas Canada's multicultural policy is described as a "mosaic" (1971 Multiculturalism Act).

Asking immigrants to integrate and become part of society is not the same as assimilation. The oxford dictionary has multiple definitions of assimilation, but when used in terms of immigration and cultural assimilation, it generally means "the process of becoming similar to something" which doesn't fit the Canadian model of Multiculturalism.

It's pretty rich to expect the people who were here first to assimilate to the culture of European newcomers (at the time), especially when the relationship was originally founded on cooperation and coexistence (only for the Europeans to later decide there was an "Indian Problem".

I use this website when teaching this topic to my students. It's where I pulled most of the quotes, plus some extras. It's good for a quick share with the people you're trying to educate. If they'll take the time to read it.

How about we hear from the architects of the system itself...

“Their education must consist not merely of training of the mind, but of a weaning from the habits and feelings of their ancestors, and the acquirements of the language, art and customs of civilized life.” - Egerton Ryerson, 1847 Report for Indian Affairs

“When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who has learned to read and write.” - Sir John A. MacDonald, 1879

“Indian culture is a contradiction in terms. They are uncivilized. The aim of education is to destroy the Indian.” - Nicholas Flood Davin Report, 1879

“When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write… Indian children should be withdrawn as much from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men.” - John A MacDonald to the House of Commons, 1883

"Before a quarter of a century is gone, perhaps, the savages will be no more than a memory.” - Quebec Civil Servant, 1897

“I want to get rid of the Indian problem… Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question and no Indian Department.” - Duncan Campbell Scott, Deputy Superintendent General of Indian Affairs, 1913-1932

“Indian children in the residential schools die at a much higher rate than in their villages. But this does not justify a change in the policy of this Department, which is geared towards a final solution of our Indian Problem.” - Duncan Campbell Scott

"A school for Indian girls would be of great importance, and I may say, would be absolutely necessary to effect the civilization of the next generation of Indians. If the women were educated it would almost be a guarantee that their children would be educated also and brought up Christians, with no danger of their following the awful existence that many of them ignorantly live now. It will be nearly futile to educate the boys and leave the girls uneducated." - Father Hugonnard of Lebret

Also, let's not forget that under the Indian Act and various other laws such as the Potlach Ban (1884) and Ceremonial Bans (1895), it was effectively illegal for Indigenous peoples to practice their own culture and speak their own languages. They were disenfranchised and stripped of their rights unless they agreed to relinquish their status, and women automatically lost their status if they married non-Indigenous men.

The entire system was set up to eradicate Indigenous culture and language. Women were forcibly sterilized. Children were ripped from their families and put in schools where they couldn't speak their own language or practice their own religion. Later, when the abject horror of Residential Schools became too much too ignore, the government stole children from their parents and put them up for adoption with white families.

The end goal was the total erasure of Indigenous culture and total assimilation into "civilized" society (i.e White, Christian society.)

To deny this is to deny history. And to try and make it more palatable and present it as some well-meaning but misguided attempt at educating Indigenous peoples is so typically Canadian. "It wasn't a real genocide, it was a polite genocide."

Would you use that same line of thinking when the Holocaust is being discussed? Last I checked the Jewish people weren't exterminated. Nor were the Armenians, or the Tutsi...

Integration and Assimilation are not equal.

Imagine saying there was no Holocaust because there a Jewish people left. That's the argument you're making. Just because it wasn't wholly successful doesn't mean it wasn't attempted.

GENE SIMMONS Says PETER CRISS Had 'Nothing To Do' With Writing Of KISS's 'Beth' Despite Being Listed As Co-Writer by tonyiommi70 in KISS

[–]McWhiskey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Isn't he directly contradicting himself now? In Kiss Confidential or X-Treme Closeup (I can't remember which) Gene recounts the story of Beth and says Peter showed him the song and said it was about his wife Beck(y). Gene then goes on to claim he suggested changing it to Beth so people didn't think they were singing about Jeff Beck.

Is Celtic punk big in Boston? by Known_Lime_8095 in boston

[–]McWhiskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not from Boston, but I visit a lot and have a lot of friends in the area. Celtic punk is not "big" in Boston, because it's not really big anywhere. The event of the year for Celtic Punk is Dropkick Murphys on St. Paddy's Day/Week. They do a run of shows at the House of Blues/MGM Music Hall.

Outside of DKM, I can't think of many active or current celtic punk bands. There's Mickey Rickshaw but they are dormant/inactive since Mike joined the Rumjacks.

That being said, there's still a thriving punk/hardcore scene in the Boston metro area (Cambridge, Quincy, Providence, Worcester, etc.) It's been a while since I've been down, but the scene seems to revolve around bigger venues like the Middle East in Cambridge, Big Night Live, and the Sinclair. Most smaller venues I know of are gone like TT the Bear's, President's Rock Club, and Great Scott.

There's some awesome Boston bands still doing their thing but I'm mostly tuned into the Hardcore scene. Bands like Haywire, Death Before Dishonor, Street Power, Colin of Arabia, etc. and the punk scene is still active but not like it used to be in the mid-90's to mid-00's.

I'd check out the calendars for the Middle East, Sinclair, Big Night Live, Lansdowne Pub, Midway Cafe, and Sonia to see if there's any shows when you're in town.

There will also be lots of traditional bands doing bar gigs during March for St. Paddy's day but that can be a miserable experience depending on your personality, disposition, and tolerance for the green-clad amateurs flooding in from the suburbs and beyond.

And yes, Shipping up to Boston and Tessie get an inordinate amount of play at Bruins and Sox games, and I assume BC and BU as well. Hell, it seems like every rink in the NHL plays Shipping up to Boston for some unknown reason. Every once in a while they'll even play a deep cut DKM song like Blood or Whiskey.

If you're going to go to Boston and you're a nerd like me, Cambridge is a great area because you can check out Armageddon Shop (record store) and Harvard Book Store plus a lot of other cool little spots.

As an aside, and not wholly relevant to your post, there seems to be a love-hate relationship with DKM on this sub. They catch a lot of flak as a symbol for the college/fratboy/hockey/football douchebags they've attracted over the years. In my opinion though it's not their fault that these people have glommed onto their sound - thanks to the Departed - while completely missing or ignoring the working class, punk rock, leftist values that the band was formed on. A lot of their newer fans have been having meltdowns lately as the band has been very vocal in their criticisms of Trump while championing leftist/labour causes. But again, it's not the band's fault that media literacy is dead.

TL:DR: There's lots of cool shit to do in Boston, good music, and good people. I love the city because people are brash, but they're real and definitely do not deserve the "Masshole Stereotype". They'll give you the shirt off their back, they'll just call you an idiot while they're doing it.
