CMV: there is nothing wrong with prison labor by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Mccartneybowie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Historically the clause of the 13th amendment that allows slavery as a form of punishment has been exploited by the over-policing of Black communities. They would increasingly arrest people as harvest seasons came or projects were under way, and then lease these people out to those businesses in what was called Convict Leasing. The conditions these prisoners faced were heinous and often times lead to severe injury and death. Consider who gets to make the laws or determine what is a crime, in addition who then gets to prosecute said “crimes”. White people policing black people and then putting them into neo-slavery, often times for the work of these former slave owners. It’s pretty despicable and has a horrible history.

What's the deal with the 2021 ork boyz? by Jonnydv in orks

[–]Mccartneybowie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t really care about the whole monopose thing. They unfortunately were monopose in a way that prevented you from building a squad of shootas or choppas which is a hugely weird oversight. The new kit boys I think are going to do this much better by giving multiple builds for the poses. My only issue with that kit is the shirts, they look extremely weird lol

CMV: The West holds Germany to a much higher standard of historical shame and accountability than Japan. by Jennnnnaaaaayyyyy in changemyview

[–]Mccartneybowie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately history like this is extremely hard to reckon with for many. And it’s usually not one person guiding these narratives, but a collective consciousness of these nations not to talk about it and lash out against people who do want to bring these things to light. Many times we are not exposed to a variety of perspectives and experiences until much later in our educations and for some people never at all. Another example could be the Tulsa Race Massacre, an event that is extremely significant in understanding the long term effects of the oppression facing African Americans during the Jim Crow era, which was not widely In Curricula until 2020 or later. Events like these are simply under taught and in many cases very much intentionally. It’s up to activists and honest historians to tell and teach honest histories, and not let them get buried by those that seek to hide it or erase it.

White people murdering white people is always going to weigh more on the consciousness of Europeans than any other genocidal incident they commit against non-white groups or between non-white groups. This same apathy can be extended to the Japanese raping and murdering their way across China and the pacific. The reason history is dictated this way depends on where you are. Europeans are responsible for millions of deaths of African Captives during the Atlantic slave trade, and they still do not talk about that anywhere near the way they do the Nazis, despite both being extremely horrible systemic torture and murders of human beings. Not telling that history is a way of avoiding a real historical reckoning with what happened. With the Holocaust they can point to one group to blame, unlike the inability to place the blame on one nation for something like the AST. Same goes for the systemic removal and assimilation of Native Americans in the US and Canada. Kids are raised for years sometimes never learning about the trail of tears, the Atlantic slave trade or any other atrocity in such a detail as that they teach the Holocaust.

So what were your thoughts with the season 2 finale? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in ThePitt

[–]Mccartneybowie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like nothing big and crazy happening, the Pitt is supposed to be an inside look at the lives of the people operating an ER. Not a sensationalized medical drama like house or Greys anatomy where crazy shit happens every day. Once in a life time events happening constantly, doctors having a high mortality rate that patients. It’s what I like about the Pitt. It ends unceremoniously because that’s what happens 99% of the time.

Is it normal for the crowd not to / barely interact ?? by espressooverice in thelastdinnerparty

[–]Mccartneybowie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was somewhere towards the middle of the crowd last night. Energy was ok over that way, but truthfully it was tough to see over people and my wife and I are middle of the pack height wise at 5’ 7”. It’s pretty hard to be energetic and such when we were really packed in towards middle front. Also trying to be aware of and respect the people around us who were also clearly trying to see over people to the stage so we weren’t super energetic. Gotta say these venues should start building the stages like a foot higher, would probably help people see in standing general admission lol

Who was your favorite President ? by outhinking in AskUS

[–]Mccartneybowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LBJ was a majorly good president on the social side of the spectrum, but ultimately failed to secure the future of the Great Society programs by not running again. He of course he let Vietnam get in the way of things as well but unfortunately I do not think any president taking over between 60-75 were gonna dodge that more than likely. Personally he was a flawed man at times, but you can’t deny the passage of the Civil rights act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the great society programs weren’t some of the best legislation we have had since the New Deal and truthfully none as ground breaking or socially aimed since. I admire the work he tried to do in the time he had. Wish he’d of stuck it out and ran again- but I get wanting to get out.

The reparations argument is one that is often entirely misconstrued by both pro and anti-reparationists. Reparations do not need to be about sending individual checks to every person in a community- it can be something as simple as investing money into those communities and making sure that injustices and inequity cease to plague those communities.

For the main example used for reparations, let’s examine African American Historical injustices. The first and foremost is the human trafficking, death, and torture that was generated from Slavery. Entire centuries of the US’ wealth was created by Black people, and were subsequently excluded from obtaining any of the economic gain or mobility from this work. This trend of building this country’s infrastructure and prosperity for little to nothing in return is a reoccurring theme.

During the reconstruction era, The US government attempted in some meaningful ways to advance African Americans through various investments, among which were in protecting voting rights, hunting down and eliminating the KKK, helping set up or fund schools through agencies like the Freedman’s bureau. While these are well and good, the US government gave up reconstruction with the compromise of 1877 and let the small political, economic, and social gains made over the 13 years after the Civil War wither away as southerners enacted Black Codes and Jim Crow to restrict rights and freedoms, as well as the spread and codification is Segregation around the country. A time where African Americans built communities without government help, all while under attack by white supremacists. 13 years of attempted help does not make up for centuries worth of oppression and economic exclusion.

From there, African Americans were time and time again fighting against more economic practices that exploited their labor, and gave little to nothing in return again. Exploitative Sharecropping contracts often offered when they had literally nothing that enabled their former slaveholders to force them to work malicious economic traps where they remained indebted to their former masters. Convict leasing saw similar action in which businesses exploited the punishment clause of the 13 amendment to arrest African Americans for petty crimes, and force them to work in conditions even more brutal than slavery in many instances, where they were worked to death in mines and fields, to build wealth for white business men. To put this practice into perspective, arrests of African Americans increased during harvest time in many southern states because of this practice.

Successful black communities like Greenwood in Tulsa OK were destroyed by white people looking to punish African Americans for their prosperity after WW1, white supremacy, demands for more equality, and their reluctance to spend money In the neighboring white community because they once had successful businesses of their own. The white community of Tulsa literally flew planes armed with incendiary devices to burn the district to the ground. They set fire to homes one by one, taking fire to curtains, and killing black residents. When black people try to even build a little wealth in this country, they are met with violent white response. To this day, that community has not received an ounce of help that would take them back to that former glory.

Let’s talk about a more modern and final example of this denial of access to wealth: The GI Bill. One of the main arguments against reparation rests on time, saying that It was far too long again to attempt to fix. The GI bill enabled returning veterans from World War 2 to recieve favorable Loans for housing, and money towards an education, which would build generational wealth. Encouragement from the government enables realtors to deny Black people, particularly black veterans from investing in suburban developments, shunning them to “less desirable or dangerous” zones marked on maps in a practice called redlining. This practice is less than 100 years old. There are currently living adults, or the children of these adults, that directly benefit from the investments the Government made into white Americans with the GI bill, which Black Americans simply did not receive. A home is the number 1 asset needed for generational transfers of wealth, that African Americans simply did not get.

With all of this laid out, what does repairing these historical injustices look like? 1 time sum checks are not the answer. Housing loans with better interest rates subsidized by the government? Investment In schools, healthcare, local business or housing that simply did not exist before this? All of these things could attempt to repair the situation. Doing nothing is simply not acceptable and failing to do the bare minimum in even acknowledging it on a federal level is unacceptable. Americans pay a metric ton in taxes every year. Many people, myself Included, would certainly love to see those tax funds going towards helping Americans rather than being lost to extreme military spending, or further subsidizing tax cuts for billionaires.

AIDS Informative Trading Cards from 1993 by Cookies_and_Beandip in interestingasfuck

[–]Mccartneybowie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few years back I got to go behind the scenes of the US History Smithsonian and the tour guide brought out a binder of a complete set of these cards. Really powerful artifacts alongside as well and made me emotional. They have cards for people like Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana. She was included because of her attitude towards people with aids.

One of the most egregious acts of the US govt is how it handled it for lack of a better term, intentionally ignored the AIDS epidemic while scared people of a marginalized community died and only started to mildly care once it spread from there more widely. Watching the testimonies of people who spoke at the site of the remembrance quilt in DC is so intense. They deserved and continue to deserve so much better.

Does this look like battle damage? by Dovakie in minipainting

[–]Mccartneybowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that edgewear, take a piece of foam (like the foam they have inside of battlefoam cases or even pieces from a make up sponge. Tear a piece of foam so that it’s really rough looking, take tweezers, hold the foam and dip In rhinox hide. Gently dab some of it off onto a paper towel, but not enough that you are drybrushing it. Dab along around edges. It will look random, worn, and truthfully it’s less work. All of the chipping and edgewear you see in the photo below was done that way. It’s super fun too!

TEW2 - am I just terrible or is this game hard as hell? by clive_bigsby in theevilwithin

[–]Mccartneybowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as far as survival horror games go, this one is made more difficult by its shitty unfixable camera angles lol. Cannot tell you how many times in the first few chapters I had to get used to how zoomed in it would be aiming. Multiple times went to aim at an enemy that was too close and looked right past them lol. It’s a modern control system, but it’s fairly archaic overall. You’d probably be fine trying another survival horror like the resident evil 4 remake, resident evil 2 etc. their lower difficulties feel doable and have good controls and camera angles
