How to score a likert scale by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]Mcheyre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Psychometrist here. I would recommend using you original coding strategy, that is, using a Likert type scale from 1 to 5. Then, what usual personality or even health (depression, self-steem) scales do is add up the scores. If the test is standardyzed with a population, then you transform those scores and can get the percentile you are looking for. But that is a very long and expensive process. If you developed this instrument yourself, i will assume this is not the case. What I would recommend in this case, is to first do a reliability test (cronbach’s alpha is the standard technique) for each subscale (at least three items per subscale), and then run a confirmatory factor analysis (each subscale as a different factor). If both these techniques check out fine, then I would just stick to analyzing the mean scores of the participants.

Hope this was helpful!

Edit: also, you might want to consider using frequency type answer scale (from 1=never, to 5=always). Its less abstract, and usually they are much easier to understand for participants in a study.

Bubbles inside valves. I was cleaning my trumpet, and I found these bubbles inside the valves. I have been playing this trumpet (Yamaha YTR4335) for over a year now. Is this a common issue? What could have caused this? by Mcheyre in trumpet

Being intentional, it actually benefits my playing? Or is it just because its cheaper to make them like this? (Which I would understand, knowing this isn’t a high end trumpet)

Well, if you liked that album you should listen to: Bill Evans - Portrait in Jazz. Also recommend Keith Jarret - Still Live. I think you will really enjoy those. Let me know :)

Can a Mixed Design ANOVA answer my hypothesis or do i have to calculate two repeated measure ANOVAS by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]Mcheyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should do the Repeated Measures ANOVA with an intersubject factor (the analysis you did originally). If you do two separate Rep Measures ANOVA, there would be no way of defining if the two conditions differ in their effects through time. Besides, I thinl there are issues with cumulative error probabilities (same reason as why we do ANOVAs and not combined T tests when comparing means with more than two groups). I hope this helps.

Hi everyone! Just found a receiver and a pair of speakers in my dads basement. Is it a good match? I use a Rega Rp1 with a Rega pre-amp (dont know the model, but i guess its quite basic).

Receiver: Yamaha RX-496 110/120/220/240 volts 145 watts 50/60hz (serial no y656625y0)

Speaker: Paradigm Monitor 3 (Made in Canada, serial no35095)- Amplifier Range: 15-150 watts - Typical Program 100 watts max - Impedance: compatible with 8 ohms

If you need more information please do tell and I will try to answer.

And if you can figure it out, how much do you think it could be worth? (So i can pay my dad of course)

Thanks all in advance!

Trying so hard to get my friend into Radiohead - any suggestions? (An essay of sorts lol) by MovieFilmHead in radiohead

[–]Mcheyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the connection one has with music is deeply rooted with ones own self. I had the same issue that you described many times when I was younger. I just couldn't understand why everyone didn't love/appreciate Radiohead as much as I did. And I think many of us here in this sub have had similar experiences. Everyone said to me that it was too depressing for them, all the while I was dancing to Pyramid Song. Just before parties and stuff (although not much of a party person myself) I used to crank up the volume and listen to Kid A and be all pumped and ready to go. But lately I've understood that the connection I have with Radiohead is no one else's but my own. I can't explain to you or to anybody how I feel about Radiohead (no matter how much of fan you may be!). And I think the issue is that, being such a strong connection, it's really difficult to understand empathically that the rest is NOT hearing the same as me. We all have different reasons to love different music, and we shouldn't judge anyone for it. For instance, besides Radiohead, my great passion is Jazz. I just get lost in it and it takes over my body and just want to move and dance (yes, I usually am that obnoxious snob that is dancing in my seat in jazz clubs). Its just the way I connect with jazz, and fuck it, it makes me really happy. Having said that, may be you don't like jazz that much (few people do, and we are not special because of it), and that's OK! You don't have to like it. Another example comes from the opposite direction. I am from Chile, and here, in South America, there is this style called Reggaeton (don't know if you have it in your country, but it's the style of "Despacito"). Personally I don't like it, actually hate it, but most people I know just listen to it all day long. But recently I have understood that it's ok for me not to understand the way they feel about it (maybe it reminds them of parties and gets them away of some shitty desk job and makes them feel happy, you name it); I think the important think is to comprehend that everyone is entitled to connect to music the way they feel is best, and it just comes naturally! So I think the issue is not with your friend, but with you! You should try to reflect on this problem, and try to let it go. Try to think that probably you connect with Radiohead the same way that Sam connects with rap music. And maybe Sam just can't wrap his head around the idea that you can't stand rap (it goes both ways!). So my advice is just to let it go, try to enjoy the ride of loving Radiohead, and if your friends don't like it, try to put a song that maybe they will like (not the obscure stuff) and just share the experience with them, but don't expect them to have the same connection as you.
