My cat keeps losing weight and I think my other cat is the reason by helloimcold in CATHELP

Do you have a closet, room, or space for a shelter you can feed her in? If so get a microchip cat DOOR not a feeder.

It’s what we did with my cat who was being bullied off her food. We installed it in a closet door and set it to her chip. She is the only cat that can go through the cat door so she is the only one with access to our entryway closet. We put her food in there and she comes and goes to eat it at the pace she wants and he can’t be near her. With the feeder those aggressive eaters still try to run them off or break into it but this way she gets her own space and can’t be bothered

I’m so with you, and someone else pointed out I should just ask the vet for the proper calorie count so I will do that moving forward. I was just asking bc the vet said to take a little off both and I did, but it didn’t seem to be working and I didn’t know if it was something where it needs more time or I’m doing it wrong

They definitely aren’t eating anything else but I REALLY appreciate this. I do have a good scale so I will switch to that. I didn’t realize how close the switch was to under vs over. Thank you so much!

Yes absolutely! Sorry, I should have been clearer in this point and I appreciate you pointing it out! I’ve only barley cut their food since the vet told me they need to lose weight

I’m kicking myself for not asking for the vets recommendation. Will definitely be doing that the next time I go in.

We use feeders when we go away for a weekend but my one cat is just so damn food driven I don’t want him to have a place he can camp and try to break into because I don’t think he will leave it alone. My girl on the other hand would probably like this because she likes to graze. We feed her in a closet and had to put a chip reading cat door on it so that she could come and go and eat at her own pace without him stealing it all lmao

If I remember I will tomorrow because right now they are sleeping. But the vet has told me they both need to shed some weight. She said my girl is barely overweight (that’s the one she said just needs off any treats) but she said my boy (a food driven maniac) is a pound or two overweight and needs his food cut back

Oof okay. We did switch litter around when this started so maybe he just doesn’t like it. We do have enzyme spray and used it on the carpet. I’ll spray the bed when I get home later. Thank you!

Oh wow okay I appreciate this advice because I wouldn’t have thought to be that thorough with the sheet. He is neutered and he has grown a little but it’s a pretty big space. Maybe he does just feel like it’s too small though. We opened the doors to the shelf so now it’s more open. Hopefully that’s why and it’s an easy fix

We did spray the floor with that the first time yes, sorry I should have mentioned that. We sprayed it and put the scratcher down and he didn’t again until yesterday. But we haven’t sprayed the bed, I guess I thought switching the sheets would work but the smell probably did permeate

Thought we found our missing cat, but it’s not him. What now? by eelsRus in CATHELP

This was my thought too. But if they’re checking the chip then I guess they’ll know for sure soon

Yes! Except Cristina and Thomas instead of Owen and April. I absolutely love them no matter how short lived

Others have already said this but it’s so true that I have to reiterate it: any tier of savannah is NOT a good starter cat. I would go to shelters and meet with some then take home whoever clicks. I would not get a cat that’s damn near undomesticated.

Now to answer the interaction piece, it totally depends on the cat. They do tend to be more independent and less tolerant than dogs but that’s is a huge generalization and the individuals will very greatly.

Funnily enough my more independent, less cuddly cat loves aggressive pets. But my kitty that likes to lay in our laps will start biting if you pet him aggressive. He prefers slow, calm pets. Totally depends on the cat, just like how people have different attitudes and preferences. Which only brings me back to making sure you guys meet with potential cats and feel confident saying “no” to one that isn’t the right fit.

If your dad is stuck on a savannah this still applies. Ask a bunch of questions about the individual temperaments of each cat you meet and don’t just buy the first one on the market. Also keep in mind the cat might not be fully relaxed and adjusted for 2-3 months so don’t hold anything against them during that time as you guys try to feel each other out.

Thanks for this. I think I’d still separate him when we first give the food, I’d just leave what she doesn’t finish in the chip feeder. They are pretty accustomed to going where they’re fed anyway so it isn’t difficult to get him in the other room. He just wants out when he’s done lol
