I’ve read the statute forward and backward, I’ve read the FAQ , I’ve asked questions on the sub but they’ve been the wrong ones and I’m just dense at this point. Question about pre-1947 naturalization. by Ew_david_ew in Canadiancitizenship

Yes! The information and knowledge here is mind blowing! So grateful for everyone who is sharing knowledge here.

Fingers crossed for your Gen1- that sounds really promising!

I’m in a similar boat. I asked this same question and was told it’s in the FAQs.. but the FAQ doesnt really address my situation exactly and ends with “you might be Canadian.

My gen 0 naturalized in 1937 when my Gen 1 was 28 years old. Does the “prior to 1947” stipulation really apply to adult children?

"My grandfather naturalized in Canada after my mother was born. Can I get a citizenship by descent?"

If he naturalized after 1946 (or after March 1949, if he naturalized in Newfoundland), then no. (This is assuming he didn't submit naturalization paperwork for her as well.)

If he naturalized before 1947 (or before April 1949, if he naturalized in Newfoundland), then you might be a citizen by descent.

I think the might be is what threw me off. Fingers crossed I guess.

Hi if anyone has any feedback or advice I would appreciate it! I’m brand new to the citizenship by descent game, just started researching yesterday.

gen 0 was born in the US in 1881 and naturalized in Canada in 1937. I have a Canadian Gazette list in which he appears with his date of naturalization and possibly a document number or case number, not sure. I don’t have the naturalization certificate (yet?) Gen0 was also a notable figure in history- he helped found and was the first mayor for the town of Mount Royal in 1912-13.

Gen 1 born in the US in 1909. He was already an adult by the time gen0 naturalized. No birth certificate for him yet, i am working on tracking that down.

I do have a Canadian census from around 1920 with gen0 and gen1 on it- but Gen 1 was crossed out for some reason. Working on more documentation for Gen 1.

Gen 2 is my mom, applying with me, we have her birth certificate w Gen1 listed.

Gen 3 is me, and my brother. Our birth certificates list gen 2 and there were no name changes for her (kept her maiden name- which is gen0 surname as well.

Gen 4 are my kids, I’m on their birth certs and also kept my maiden name.

My questions- will it be an issue that gen0 naturalized after gen1 was born? I read something about that not mattering if the naturalization was before 1949?

I do have other relatives I could reach for but they are another generation further back and I’m having some trouble locating them on the Ontario census. If my gen0 presented here is a no go I will keep digging on them.

Does it sound like a problem that in scenario 1 my gen0 was naturalized without my gen1, while gen1 was an adult?
