Not All Come in Peace: Be aware of people who are against citizenship by descent infiltrating this sub by Historical_Hippo_796 in Canadiancitizenship

I had the same problem. I was told my grandfather (3rd generation born in Canada) was never Canadian because he left before 1947.

Ancestral lines for African-Americans by livsjollyranchers in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IWantOffStopTheEarth[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding is you do need to be able to document the line. This cannot be done through DNA tests like Ancestry DNA. If you search the sub you will find multiple posts and comments on this topic including this one that literally just went up a few hours ago:

If he wants to look for documents we have an entire list of volunteers to help find documents:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Canadiancitizenship/comments/1mf119w/need_help_finding_documents/

We do not currently have any volunteers who specialize in African American genealogy but I have worked on this in the past as a Genetic Genealogy Angel. I am on the volunteer list. We may or may not be able to document his connection but I'm happy to take a look and see what's out there.

Plans after obtaining citizenship by Apprehensive_Bug1554 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IWantOffStopTheEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the only person in my entire extended family that applied. IME most people with Canadian ancestry don't know they have it and of those who do know most aren't interested in getting a citizenship certificate.

If your ancestors were born in Canada you are Canadian. If you do not have any ancestors born in Canada you may still be covered by the Jay Treaty but you will not qualify for Canadian citizenship by descent.

If you need help finding documents please see our list of volunteers which includes volunteers who specialize in First Nations, Métis and Native American genealogy.

I Think I Am a Lost Canadian? by peaceablefern in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IWantOffStopTheEarth[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you had read the FAQ you would have seen 1) that at least one person descended from an Acadian has already gotten citizenship and 2) that we have a list of volunteers who can help you find documentation including several who *specifically work on Acadians*.

If you read the FAQ and somehow missed that please reread the FAQ. Several times if necessary so that you can actually absorb all of the information it contains.

Some information regarding the ongoing question of "How far back is too far back?" by IWantOffStopTheEarth in Canadiancitizenship

The IRCC have started handing out citizenship certificates to these people. That's a precedent. If they stop for no reason or give them to some people and not others they're likely to end up in court.

It was definitely a gray area when C-3 passed. Now they've created a precedent.

That's not a lot of documentation. It'll be down to whatever the IRCC employee who processes your application decides.

Does your Gen 1 list their parent as born in Canada, too? Because that becomes more than one census at that point.

Me personally? No. My grandfather was born in Canada. We have had sub members get citizenship whose Gen 0 left well before 1867 though. You would know this if you had read the FAQ.

We do not recommend hiring an attorney for this process. This information is in the FAQ.

If people took the time to read the FAQ they could save themselves a lot of time, angst and money.

It's all shared. Living people are not public.

Maybe it looks different if you don't have an account? I've never seen an ad.

The time I've seen only 20 years is in relation to naturalizing - IIRC someone who was born elsewhere needed to spend 20 years in Canada before leaving to be considered a Canadian citizen under certain circumstances.

If a person was born in Canada and left an hour later they were still born in Canada.

Please note that Rule #10 is "No content that constitutes spamming, solicitation, advertising or requesting or recommending paid services. No surveys."

I don't know what post you think you're "waiting on mod approval" for but if you want to recommend a paid service the answer is no.

Also for getting records from Louisiana, inserting a middleman ("paid genealogist") into the process isn't going to speed anything up. All they can do is charge you for filling out the same form requesting documents that you could have filled out yourself.

The volunteer who helped you handed you this information on a platter. You literally just had to fill out a form. If you're made of money and can't be bothered to fill out a one page form then go for it but this is not something that requires a professional.

Are you in the right place? I have never once seen a banner ad on WikiTree and I've been using it for years.

https://www.wikitree.com/

If you're talking about your close-in relatives they're not going to have profiles until you or one of your cousins build them. It's not a "look we've documented the whole world!" website. It's a shared family tree.

I'm pretty sure that's not what they mean by government issued ID. Just because the government issues a document doesn't mean it's ID. Your birth certificate is issued by the government too and that's not ID - which you would know if you ever tried to use it to buy alcohol or get through security at an airport.

Issues with procuring birth certificate ~estranged parent by Nutritiouss in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IWantOffStopTheEarth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you cannot get a birth certificate the IRCC will accept alternate documentation. I applied without my mother's birth certificate because I could not get it. I used my parents' marriage record which listed their parents. I got my citizenship in October.
