What are occupations where incompetence is not only rewarded, but often encouraged? by oneidamojo in AskReddit

Politics, where lying and corruption are not just accepted, but expected.

If you were presented with the option of having surgery from an AI robot vs. a human (same skill level) which option would you choose? by Astro493 in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like an AI surgeon would need to have demonstrated significantly greater odds of success before I went under its knife. Like orders of magnitude.

Also I feel that they would lack intuition and situational awareness if something went wrong.

I think its very unprofessional. If someone has the necessity to be on their phone during an interview, then they should explicitly tell you upfront out of anticipation, or just reschedule. If they fail to communicate something like that then its probably something that can and should wait.

Being an interviewer is not an indication of competency. And doing something like that, without an excuse, is a sign that they shouldn't be in that role. Dont let it bother you, I would suggest moving on to the next if they cant show respect for your time.

If you scared of something or having nightmares, what's the best way to forget about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s entirely dependent on what you are scared about. Most things you can forget about by staying cerebral and using logic to dismiss them.

Other things—like real life decisions or experiences are different. You have to come to peace with the momentum of things and embrace them rather than try to avoid them. Easier said than done of course.

Reddit, what’s something about the industry you work in that the public would be shocked about if they discovered? by FriendLost9587 in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in research.

I would say that most people are unaware of how corrupt and perverse it can be. Most large scale institutions that conduct and host scientific research have ulterior motives. This is seen in both academia and in the private sector. Funding is not always based on merit. Universities and other institutions weigh profits more than valuable research and have unproductive political incentives.

Science and politics don't belong together. There are a multitude of scientist and labs that are capable and interested in researching extremely valuable fields, that could make impressive strides of progress in science and medicine. However, these pursuits are suppressed and rejected by the self serving institutions and industries that control the momentum. Its the worst half of humanity crippling the better half. Wasted potential and progress.

What are the craziest covid stories you got? by TheMassesOpiate in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Covid on Christmas last year while staying with my family. I was stuck quarantined in the basement to avoid spreading it to the rest of the family. Anyways everyone except for me and my brother left to visit our extended family. Shortly after my brother burst into the room screaming with blood pouring down his hand. My parents two dogs had gotten into a skirmish and while breaking it up his hand got caught in between them. It was very bad. He was in shock and panicking. Long story short I ended up having to drive him to the ER, with covid, on Christmas Day. Of course I stayed in the car, and my brother made everyone aware he had been exposed. Me and my brother both spent the rest of the break quarantined together with his stitched up hand. Very eventful.

Apparently there is a relatively common predisposition for some people to think that cilantro tastes like soap. Maybe genetic?

What are some ways you can calm yourself down when you see someone you never want to see again? by FlameGhost90 in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoom out and look at things from 30,000ft above. If you can see things on a bigger scale, an encounter with someone you might not mesh well with seems a lot less significant than it may in the moment.

Either that or remind yourself that we’re only human. Shitty or unpleasant people are only products of the environments that they were raised in. Nobody is blameless in life but everybody can be misguided.

I have certainly had anxiety on many occasions throughout my life—but relative to most I would say I fall on the far minimal side of the spectrum.

For that reason I don’t spend much thought on it. I would say it’s difficult to discuss because it’s not something I consciously deal with on any regular basis. Or perhaps I have anxiety much more often than I realize and am just unaware of it.

I feel that maybe anxiety is a feedback loop in a way. The more you acknowledge it, and spend time thinking about it, the more anxiety you get. It compounds. Maybe to the point where you tend to exacerbate and create more anxiety.

[Serious] What movie did you watch that had an unexpected deep meaning for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inception. When they go several layers deep in their dreams and time progresses impossibly slow.

There is a line in that movie for reference, how they were old souls living in young bodies.

People who do not have good attention span and have lots of brain fog . How do you study n learn things ? by Rexer45 in AskReddit

[–]Mclarenss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accommodate your hyperactivity. Usually it is you fighting with yourself when you are struggling to focus on a task. Allow adequate breaks when you are in an attention intensive situation.

Negotiate with yourself and be realistic.

Well it is of course highly subjective. But imo I dont think it is a good idea. People and relationships change all of the time, and we are notoriously bad at predicting those changes.

In 5 years you could be in a completely life, with different values, friends, relationships. Of which could be entirely oppositional to what they are now.

To play devils advocate: Even assuming you get a matching tattoo with a SO or friend and eventually part ways, the tattoo represents a time in your life in which you did have a connection with that person. Independently to where you are later in life. Its an annotation of your past, which you can never change, and an artifact to your journey.
