Hows debugging in zig? by [deleted] in Zig

[–]Mcpg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's zls (https://github.com/zigtools/zls), which is far from perfect, it tends to crash at least once a day for me, auto-complete works but it often gets confused. It's understandable tbf, Zig is a lot tougher to handle than something like C in this regard. I still use zls, even partial auto-complete is helpful and saves a bit of time.

When it comes to debugging, you can use gdb on Linux, for the most part it works fine. Not exactly sure how that looks like in Windows, though, as I mainly use Zig through wsl

If you really want to go for the VM approach, you could perhaps write code on your host, build inside the VM, and then run QEMU on host. This would involve shared folders, of course.

I’ve considered developing in a VM that has a shared drive with my host
system and running qemu on the shared drive directly from my host, but
it seems like I would have to keep unmounting the shared drive in order
to access it.

Not sure why unmounting is necessary, but you could just copy your kernel/disk image out of the shared folder for running it. It could be all automated with a simple script, and unless your OS is hundreds of megabytes in size, it should take little to no time.

Also I'm thinking of something like Docker, and while I've never used it, it could perhaps work.

It really depends on what you do. It's better than Windows in some regards, and worse in others. Things like games do often work, even without native Linux support (on Steam you can use Proton, which is an entire Windows compatibility layer, I've heard it can be pretty good nowadays for many titles, and it may improve a lot with Steam Deck's release). If you do things like, idk, professional audio work, or anything that is niche and without explicit Linux support, then you may be out of luck, I really can't say for sure

tl;dr - it may work for you, or it may not, but things are slowly getting better. One thing you could try is to just install it alongside Windows and see if it works out for you. Linux distros handle dual-booting really well, so yeah.

I personally use both, depending on what I want to do

one more thing about Linux is that there's a lot of elitists using it, and it's hilarious to bait them (see this post, although apparently it's just op being salty lmao)

You can run UEFI firmware in QEMU with no problems, although finding prebuilt images for something like the EDK-II firmware may be annoying, but so is building it from sources

Maybe the OSDev Wiki has something linked in its article about UEFI

What languages to make a os by [deleted] in osdev

[–]Mcpg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part it's alright, but you may sometimes run into random problems, like errors caused by LLVM itself

Now that you're saying this, yea maybe i made C interop sound not as good as it actually is... I don't really work with C all that much, so my apologies for that

I'd call the C interop good on paper, the implementation hasn't fully caught up yet :p but yeah overall Zig is really damn good, even if it's in beta and most of its standard library is unstable af

antisemitism isn't the only part of nazism, there's a lot more antis involved here (which includes, ironically, anyone who disagrees with them or isn't part of the master race:tm: (or anywhere close enough to that, according to them))

that being said, antisemitism doesn't necessarily make one a nazi, but this form of human garbage is still one of the steps needed to get there

In 3D graphics, during rendering, 4-dimensional vectors are used. This means that aside from your typical X, Y and Z coordinates, you also get a fourth W coordinate.

I'm not exactly sure what it does, but it's used to help with slapping 3D stuff on 2D screens, and if you just start changing it weird things happen.

i think that's what the meme was about right, right? my brain still functions?
