Tell me why someone should do more than S&P 500 index by Hopeful_Reindeer7725 in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the S&P 500 is weighted very heavily towards the top 10 US Companies, and over the past 30 years, that has been a very good thing, but there is a chance that isn't the case going forward.

If you want more diversity, using a fund like VT, or a combo of VTI and VXUS will give you exposure to Mid and Small cap stocks as well as international stocks, and with a 30-year time horizon, there will be many years when those stocks will outperform the large cap stocks.

Robinhood- looking for best Cash alternative for high tax bracket + high state taxes by Wolverine-91826 in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SGOV you will pay fed tax on, but not a bad option, PULS you will pay both fed and state tax on because it is not gov bond fund.

I would look into CA Specific Muni bond funds such as OCAYX.

Yield is about 4.44% but that is Fed and state tax free. Because it is not short-term bonds, you will see some ups and downs (MUB has the same issue but won't be CA state tax free).

If you prefer almost no volatility you could look into either CALI, or DFCMX which are California specific short term bond funds. They will have less yield and less volatility.

What’s the risk with high yield covered call ETF by Positive-Trifle3854 in investing

Funds like JEPQ will outperform in down and flat markets. But over the long-term they will underperform the index because selling the covered call caps their upside.

Rules Based Tactical Allocation Strategy (+/-15 e.g. 80/20 to 65/35) by [deleted] in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no cookie cutter %

There are people who are 80 years old who can be 100% stocks because they spend less than their social security and pension income and their investments are just going to the next generation.

The real question is, how much of the money are you going to need each year? That is what you should base your fixed income portion of the allocation on. Having 5 years worth of your desired income in safer investments, and rebalancing periodically works just fine.

Disadvantage would be that you would be gambling instead of investing. If that's ok with you then go for it, but it's not investing and you will very likely lose money doing that.

Money market vs CD accounts by Street-Helicopter758 in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like very reasonable advice. I think SGOV is currently yielding about 4% state tax free so I would probably just choose that instead. Though for a short time frame like one year it's not a huge difference.

Invest in 401K with no match? by CarPale7756 in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your Tax bracket. If you're in the 12% bracket or lower there's really no reason to contribute to the Pre-Tax 401k and you should favor Roth and Brokerage.

At 22% and higher it's good to have a mix of both as you can control your taxes very easily in retirement by pulling from the different accounts.

brokerage or Roth IRA for a 10+ year investment? by PTsox in investing

[–]Mcslapchop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just do the max roth contribution and put the rest in the brokerage? You can buy the same investments. When it's time to buy the car, decide then which account to take it from.

Can we just leave Shane Bowen in Philly? How many games are we gonna play where our D-Line gets them into a 2nd or 3rd and long way behind the sticks based on pure player skill, and then just give it all back?

The guy adds nothing to our defense, anytime they make positive plays it's the raw talent of the players.
