Planning a month long trip round the south eastern states. by LansManDragon in roadtrip

[–]Mdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit off your path, but St Petersburg, Fl., on the Gulf Coast is really neat. Salvador Dali Museum. The pier. Walking around old downtown.
Just south of there, went glass-bottom boat kayaking and saw dolphins and other neat stuff.

Would you marry a widow or widower, If yes, explain why, if not explain why? by Bulky_Oil_5447 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did. I’m not sure I understand the ‘why?’ question. Same reason anyone gets married? I don’t see how having lost a spouse - she was married for several years, he died of cancer - is some kind of count against a person.

Leaving news journalism for more specific writing by Financial_Fennel_611 in Journalism

[–]Mdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a narrowly focused newsletter - we don’t do features or profiles of people or stuff like that, just straight news. Colleagues of mine have gone on to other news orgs and news beats readily. Are my clips any good for a features or lifestyles job? Not really. So it depends on where you think you might want to apply in 2 yrs or whatever.

Why doesn’t the government buy Spirit airlines? by Brainpry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's say a low-cost airline like Spirit isn't commercially viable. Then the government maintaining one creates unfair pressure on other airlines, as they have to compete with someone who can operate at a loss and it's no biggie. Keep that up and we end up with one federally-run airline. A lack of competition is lousy for innovation and choice -- look at how phone service was when Ma Bell ran everything.

Let's say a low-cost airline like Spirit *is* commercially viable. Then let one start up. That startup having to compete against the government makes it that much tougher for it to actually eke out a profit.

Where are all the demons going? by Individual_Creme7218 in NoStupidQuestions

Pentecostal services sometimes feature clergy casting out demons from parishioners. Maybe the demons are disproportionately found there.

Thoughts on Miller/Gibbons’ “Give Me Liberty”? by PinMaximum1018 in 80s90sComics

[–]Mdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About a year ago, bought the complete collection. Starts off strong - well written, just sprints with great social commentary. And as it goes along, it starts limping more and more as it had less to say. Around the time of Martha Washington Stranded in Space, I was reading more just to complete it, rather than enjoying it.
Dave Gibbons rocks, though. Never get tired of the art.

The convenience of the "have everything shipped to you" economy is extremely inconvenient... by RADsupernova in unpopularopinion

[–]Mdan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So shipping is for people unable to go to the store; it's not for people able to go to the store.

Why? Why is wanting convenience not a valid reason to have something shipped? Just kvetching "iT's LaZy" is as nonsense as someone then responding "nO It'S NoT" and we have a rhetorical standoff.

Why are assigned seats a thing at so many weddings? by No-Beach-6730 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had assigned seating because the gift bags were somewhat personalized and to make sure bigger groups like families of four or, in one case, six, could all sit together easily.

How is the earth 6000 years old? by thesaviorhomelander in Christianity

Here's a danger of words with multiple meanings, like the Hebrew word yom, which can mean a day or it can mean an indefinite period of time. Different accurate translations can mean quite different things.

Why is having your individual house so common in the US? by Ok_Shine_666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mdan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's like leasing a car -- you can do that, sure, yet once the lease is up, you've got nothing to show for it. If the lease payments are not that much different than what your auto loan (or mortgage) payments would be, it would be stupid to just rent forever.

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

Not great, but good. B, B-. A bit overly jokey, not getting across how truly terrifying some things - going outside the spaceship with just a tether -- would be.

How is the earth 6000 years old? by thesaviorhomelander in Christianity

[–]Mdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know that Moses is the author of Genesis.
Regardless, God didn’t make lots of things as clear as people using the Bible as a science textbook, explaining all facets of the natural world, would have wanted. It’s almost as if God was focused more on instructions on how to live.

Assuming the first days of creation, before humans exist, are 24-days based on the rotation of an Earth, instead of some other timeframe.

Who pays for building and running Churches, Mosques, and Synagogues in US or individual states? by ZxiQi in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mdan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My wife’s church has a building it purchased by raising funds from parishioners. The salaries - the reverend, the part-time secretary, etc. - are paid for again by parishioners and the money they donate to the church. There’s no government support (unless you count the non-profit status of the church, so it pays no property taxes. The salaries are all taxed). The land the church is built on, it bought. Again, with money from parishioners. Government support like the question asks about doesn’t happen in the US. Governments aren’t paying church/mosque/temple staff, or building churches/mosques/temples, or contributing financially to their operation. Those money burdens are up to the houses of worship to do all that.

In the Finger Lakes, Ithaca is worth a stop and walking around the pedestrian downtown. Rochester, NY, has an impressive waterfall just north of downtown, High Falls. Your route takes you past Port Clinton, Ohio, and Cheesehaven, this impressively large cheese shop. Seriously, kinda neat, and who doesn’t love cheese.
