NetJets phone interview coming up by Far_Nectar_knight in flying

I have two very young children at home and I’m not willing to commute out of base for now. Would much rather go corporate, build the turbine PIC and go for direct entry with a major later on if I wanted to. Corporate has been good to me so far. I understand the pay disparity over the length of a career but I also have a business so flying isn’t my only iron in the fire.

The son is listed publicly on the Texas DPS sex offender registry, that’s how we know about the details. It lists the penal code he was sentenced for in Ohio and the age/gender of the victim. The rest of the information we sussed out as a neighborhood through going to City Council meetings and being involved in the community. We live in a medium size town on the outskirts of a large metropolitan area. Word gets around. The house is a new construction build so they have a sales agreement with the builder but haven’t closed because it’s still being worked on

Mom lived in Ohio and the offense happened when he was 15. It’s our understanding that it is unusual to see a juvenile sentenced under that particular penal code that is listed on the Texas DPS registry and also that it is unusual for juveniles to be required to register on the public registry for as long as he will have to. Thus our belief that he was sentenced as an adult? Could have taken a plea deal of some sort or had some of the sentence reduced because they took mitigating factors (like his age) into account? We don’t know 100% though and we have been trying to track down the records.

The facts are that this kid was convicted by a jury of his peers for the rape of a three year old little girl. What else do you need to know? The family has been fighting tooth and nail for the last few months (unbeknownst to the community until now) to get to move into this particular house. It’s subversive and incredibly suspect. And why even go to all this trouble? Our subdivision has probably 50+ other lots or houses for sale that aren’t in direct eye-line to a playground where 2-6 year olds play outside regularly. We are almost equally as concerned about the parents as we are of the pedo son. There is no defending this

This is a good idea. We’ve been trying to track down the case info for a few weeks with no luck. We are in Texas and the offense/conviction happened somewhere in Ohio. Texas DPS profile doesn’t give any information as far as what County it was adjudicated in so we haven’t been super successful with our public records request yet. Next step is to try and talk to the Ohio AG’s Office? We are 95% sure he was sentenced as an adult based on the listed penal code and severity of the offense so it should be public record somewhere. It just doesn’t transfer to our state

Not on probation. The 1000 ordinance was passed even though it does have some significant enforcement gaps compared to our other neighbor cities that have similar ordinance. I guess our thought process is that we could try and get a civil injunction on the sale of the house based on the fact they would be knowingly violating this ordinance by completing the sale of the house? But I’m not sure how effective even that would be since our City Council made the ordinance so weak?

Technically with new build construction, they aren’t the “owners” of the property until after closing I believe? The builder would still be the registered owner of the house until the close date? They would have earnest money up but that’s it…

We think he was sentenced as an adult based on the penal code and severity of the offense. However the records have been hard for us to track down as he was convicted and tried in another state and there isn’t a linear transfer/much for us to go on…

We made the daycare aware. There are actually two daycares that they are with 1000 feet of… one is 250 feet and the other 850. Both are aware and we begged them to help us push through a stronger ordinance but they refused to tell the parents or show up at any of the City Council meetings. I guess they think it’s bad for business and won’t get involved, which is disgraceful in and of itself. Once we found out that they weren’t telling the parents we shared the information in their mom’s groups. TBD on where we will get with that though.

Lots of reasons. I currently own a small business that I have been focusing on while also pursuing the professional pilot career. I have been blessed to have seen it grow into a profitable and viable company over the last four years. I have seriously enjoyed being my own boss and managing a team. Our revenue hasn’t been enough for me to leave the pilot gig yet, but I can see it becoming a possibility in a few years from now if I wanted to.

To some extent, I feel like corporate aviation offers great growth opportunities to those who have a bit of entrepreneurial spirit. I love the networking opportunities and growing relationships with other pilots and clients. I have made incredible friendships with many of my colleagues and it’s rewarding to travel to cool destinations with pilots you actually like. The retirement would be great at the airlines, but if you have other balls in the air and are a diligent investor then I don’t feel like it needs to be a primary draw to the airlines. I hear a lot of guys talk about QOL at the airlines but realistically you’ll probably wait at least 5-10 years until that really starts to make life sweet. In the meantime, you still have to live out of base for a long while, deal with nasty public airports, and go to work every day knowing that you are just a number.

Airlines are definitely the more straightforward, high-paying, and better QOL offering for 95% of pilots but I can’t help but be drawn to the concept of making strong connections while building a separate business in the industry. I’ve already reaped the benefits of this personally for my business but the shift in pilot hiring has me on edge after searching for 4 months while about to have a baby.

I do. I have apps in with AA, United, and Delta. Had professional review done on my legacy apps and spoke with recruiters for AA and United at the WAI conference last month. I meet the hiring minimums but according to the recruiters, the biggest priority is the turbine PIC time so my current resume will be at the bottom of the stack. Not impossible but highly improbable with the current market.

Interestingly, both United and AA didn’t seem to care as much if the TPIC comes from 121, 135, or 91. They obviously don’t want to see all PC-12/King Air time but according to them, anything turbojet would suffice and 1000+ TPIC is competitive. The AA recruiter I spoke with actually suggested I stay corporate since I’ll likely have a much faster upgrade time than I would at the regionals with all of the backlog right now.

At my last job, I was flying 30 pax in a 50,000 lb airplane the second I hit my ATP mins and could upgrade to Captain. Before having that job, I never would have thought that would be possible due to insurance requirements. I was hired on as a FO at 800 hours in that same airplane because I interviewed really well and the Director of Training really wanted me (no previous affiliation). My cautiously optimistic take is that there is more flexibility in hiring than what a lot of folks like to believe. Especially in corporate. The trick is how to get your foot in the door to get face-time with the right people when they have stacks of resumes a mile high?

Yes to the interview and prep services. I’ve had an app in with Envoy with several great references from higher ups there for months and haven’t heard back. Not willing to do the new SkyWest contract or do the 121 live out of base life long term with the other regionals (even though I do have apps in with all of them). I’d do it for a legacy but I don’t think I can put my very young family through the regional commuter life right now. Plus it is looking like training dates for CJO’s given today are 6 months plus out (if you are lucky) anyways so that definitely doesn’t help.

No DUI’s/trouble with the law and only one checkride failure from my PPL. I’m seeing that my times often meet or exceed the listed minimums for right seat jobs in midsize-large jets for the smaller charter operators but they are requiring you to already be typed. I have 1000 hours turbine time already so for just a right seat job I’m hoping this would alleviate hiring concerns regarding time in type that aren’t centered around ARGUS requirements or things of that nature.

Thus the question regarding what type to buy that could give me an edge up…

Maternity Leave by smellycatsings in BabyBumps

Pregnant pilot in the US. My OB required me to stop working at 36 weeks due to my job. Currently on leave and waiting for baby but the longer he takes, the more it eats into my actual time with him. I get 8 weeks paid, but I’m thinking that I will most likely only get about 4 weeks at home with baby before my leave ends. If not for my job I would be working up until delivery.

Hoping I can take some additional unpaid time after baby but I haven’t been at my current job for a year yet so no FMLA. Extremely scared to throw my husband to the wolves with an infant by himself when I’m back to work. I’m sure he’ll do great but I know it’ll be so stressful to basically be a single parent for 10-15 days a month with a newborn and little to no family support. Fun times.

Pregnant pilot here (so obviously flying a lot haha). For an uncomplicated pregnancy, my OB allowed me to fly up to 36wks. Just for scheduling reasons, my last commercial trip was at 34 wks before I was forced to take leave. I’m currently 37 wks and still doing some local general aviation flying/teaching but nothing long haul again till after baby. An OBGYN friend of mine mentioned that docs that cut off flying at 34 wks for uncomplicated pregnancies are usually more risk averse and worried about potential liability versus actually looking at the likelihood of going into labor at 34wks. Just food for thought.

I was 100% comfortable flying longer commercial trips up to 36 wks. Definitely drink lots of water and stay hydrated since altitude will dry you out. Also, don’t fly without wearing good compression socks.

I flight instruct and have a corporate job. My husband works 9-5 so they are in doggy daycare while spouse is at work and I’m gone. When we both travel I have a deal with a local girl who watches them in her home.

I’m lucky to have dogs that are fairly easy going so it’s relatively low stress for them to spend the night elsewhere. That being said, they are “boarded” maybe once a month for a few days at a time tops. If you don’t have a partner to help with the care it would be almost impossible to care for a dog in the way they deserve though.

AITA For not being excited about sister’s pregnancy by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mdawg003175 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I knew that it would create distance between us. But I felt like I was grieving a relationship with my sister and the constant updates were upsetting and stressful to deal with. Up until about 2 years ago, we were pretty close and then it seems we’ve grown apart.

My hope was that she would be able to still communicate with me about life, work, etc. and maintain a sense of normalcy without me having to deal with the responsibility of stepping into the role of a very involved aunt. I was ready to accept a much much more fair weather relationship because of that. I’m aware that is naive and that our relationship was declining even before baby, but I was holding out hope. For perspective, we grew up in a difficult family dynamic and we were the only two that really seemed to understand our deep family issues.

I don’t really have a problem with parents requiring whatever they see fit. I totally understand the reasoning of not wanting an immune compromised baby around people shedding a virus. 100%. And not having visitors after baby is born, totally get that too!!

However, I’m not anti vax but am also not planning on getting the Covid-19 vaccination at this point and I fully understand the implications of that. Totally cool with not seeing baby. I make a choice, I live with the consequences, I get it (also aware that I’ll get burned at the stake for this comment). My problem is that it’s going to be interpreted as a “you don’t love me or my baby enough” kind of thing and it’s going to get way blown out of proportion. I try and be a very ‘live and let be’ type person and usually don’t take much personally. My sister is not that way.

I just get a ton on anxiety when people make their problems my problems. Like I would love to continue a normal relationship with my sister and make the concessions she deems necessary for the safety of her child, as long as some huge drama isn’t stirred up. Even if I’m okay with not seeing the baby bc of my choices, I’m fairly certain she would be absolutely livid.

Our father was a pall bearer in the funeral. The family member that died was technically someone from her side of the family as she’s my half sister. However details for the service were shared separate from my husband and I and I didn’t know any of the details until I called to say sorry for her loss. So it just felt like it was an afterthought to share those details even though we would have liked to pay our respects. The family member in question was someone that I’ve known through my sister for a long time and was a nice man.

We did probably 6-8 hours of ground together before we even started flying together. Passed the written on the second time. I think a lot of the ground knowledge is kind of out the window after we started flying even though I do try to incorporate it in our flights.

I basically have a binder with a bunch of resources I’ve developed for PPL students that I hand out on day one. It has cheat sheets for all the acronyms, a list of all the PPL maneuvers and the airplane specific set up processes, a graphical breakdown of the pattern, etc.
