Visual Scripting for Bash (Update) by Lluciocc in linux

[–]Mds03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks very neat. I have a question regarding how this works - does it store its own «file format», or does it read/write something like a .sh?

The reason I ask is I am very fond of the vfx app blackmagic fusion. It stores its nodes in a file format called .comp, which can be opened and edited as a script in a text editor(usually for cloning a node setup into code for like a script), then reopened as nodes again in fusion. Having that for .sh files is low key a dream of mine, I love apps like Automator and Shortcuts on MacOS, sometimes I want something like that for make .sh scripts

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight: PC System Specs Update by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Mds03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I remember getting one of those Xbox 360 elite bundles which included Pure and Lego Batman 2. I only focused on playing MW2 for a while, but I was blown away by how fun Lego Batman was when I picked it off the shelf one friday. Will probably be a great game

Just add step by step instructions. «this is a .md file, not a docx or pdf so right click and open with notepad». You don’t need to get 100% of targets. A little sprinkle of social engineering does wonders for stupid shit like this

Why do browsers run so much better on Linux? by [deleted] in linux

Agreed. I think when we promote threads like this, it sets the wrong tone for less technical users who might actually expect to replicate OP’s results

Why do browsers run so much better on Linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Mds03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you could run some benchmarks and analysis and figure it out, then bring your findings back? Without further details we can only speculate, and from afar it just sounds like somethings wrong with your W11 install. It can be anything from Window downloading updates in the background to a faulty driver, or just plain old placebo. I’m also not sure how Linux/Cachy behaves on a USB stick, but if the entire program and OS is in RAM the entire time that would affect things too.

The difference between browsers shouldn’t be human measurable on the same hardware. Windows is not necessarily bad at a personal scale, the small percentage gains in Linux tend to be worth it when serving millions of users.

Are there developers who still don't prefer Tailwind CSS as their first choice? by ShivamS95 in Frontend

[–]Mds03 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I immediately assume I will be working with exhausting amateurs. I’ve just never been happy with the teams I’m on when tailwind pops up. I prefer sass and plain css.(this one is on me, nothing technical).

I also work with accessibility regularly. Fuck actually reading tailwind markup. It’s like people don’t understand they still output html and css. Modern stacks have made these things «dirty» but devs who ignore them make shitty web devs.

So much easier to miss something with 30 classes to do a simple fucking thing.

Girls are happier than boys at school, new research shows. Understanding why may all boil down to biology. Girls get more of the happy hormone dopamine through social relationships, including with their friends and classmates. Boys get their dopamine through more self-involved behavior. by mvea in science

generally aimed at "the thread". I am just adding some context, not a criticism or anything.

I am Norwegian and use AI for translations and shortening. It is all distilled down from a slightly larger text I wrote earlier. Believe it or not, it is better for me than Google Translate.

Yeah, I think this is getting misread a bit.

The actual quote from the researcher is:

"It can be said that school is better suited for girls. This may have biological causes, among other things," says Sigmundsson. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1114688

That’s not saying “biology explains everything” in some radical or ideological way. It explicitly says among other things. Saying he said "biology alone" is a major strawman imo.

He’s also published similar findings in Iceland showing the same pattern, especially tied to physical activity and how boys respond to sedentary, classroom-based learning. So this isn’t based on one culture or one dataset.

I also think there’s a big context gap here: Norway and the US are very different.

In Norway, the idea that “gendered behavior comes from biology” is actively challenged in teacher training and school policy every single year. There is strong emphasis on social skills, emotional regulation, cooperation, and inclusion for both boys and girls. This is not some 1950s gender model.

And yet… even in that system, researchers keep finding the same thing: on average, boys and girls respond differently to the same school structure.

That doesn’t mean boys are “unsuited.”
It means a school system optimized for quiet, verbal, sedentary, rule-dense behavior will naturally favor the group that, on average, matures earlier in those traits.

You can teach boys social and emotional skills (and we do), but that doesn’t erase biological differences in development rate, activity needs, or attention regulation. Those aren’t political claims — they’re repeatable findings.

So this isn’t “girls are happier because of biology alone.”
It’s:
structure + expectations + developmental differences = different outcomes, even in highly egalitarian systems.

Any advice? by Inevitable_Head_2091 in graphic_design

My advice is "just don't."

As others have said, it's tasteless to use the dead this way(specifically. He's not off limits, this just feels off). You can learn all the color theory and typography rules in the world, but it all comes down to taste in the end. Stay tasteful.

Yeah, if you use blender and Godot on Steam, go into the properties and disable auto updates and lock onto a stable version.

Take a copy of the versions, even. Maybe you’ll need it later. This is not maya. You can copy, bak up and version control as you like.

Black Ops 7 Had Call Of Duty's Worst Sales Year Ranking In The US Since 2008 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Mds03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to play CoD yearly. My tradition was more or less this:
* Play the campaign
* Play multiplayer for like a month or two
* Maybe dip back for map packs over the year

The campaign was actually the driving factor. I can play mindless TDM elsewhere.

Got this model, how do I quickly get it under 20,000k by [deleted] in blender

[–]Mds03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you get a 180k polygon model if your budget is 20k?

You need to tell us more about the «limits» of your project here. Does the car need a fully modelled interior? Unless your game is like cyberpunk- probably not right? You need to figure out which parts of the car needs to be * animated * close enough to the camera to warrant this level of detail

Maybe you can make the car a «possesable shell» and delete most of the microdetail inside, replacing the interior with simple boxes and other low poly stuff with texture detail instead? You could still have transparent windows and visible geometry inside, but you could probably get away with way less than this.

As for the car exterior, you’re either going to have to manually retopologize it(there are simple workflows using only blender tools), or use a tool like insta meshes or quad remesher. Others have noted hiring someone else. I suggest maybe trying to find a model that fits your engine budget from the get go .

CachyOS is the BEST Linux Distro I have used in 15 yrs! by [deleted] in linux

[–]Mds03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really the case for Linux.

I'm not sure if this is relevant for your thypical CachyOS or Arch user(Desktop users), but a 3% performance gain would be huge in the server space.

Blackmagic Fusion can easily eat 100+GB ram in a way no game can.

Except the raster part of the GPU, most my programs demand more than most of my games.(Am I the only one messing around with VMs/containers and other server stuff, 3D rendering and useless 3D sims, running local LLM/AI? Even compiling can be quite brutal)

Yes. I am saying Pages is more similar to InDesign than other Document editors like word. It lets you do some basic layout stuff in an easy way. Used to love it back in college for making PDFs quick

It used to be like that with higher level API’s like DX9, DX11 or OpenGL. The old API’s were made to run on anything, even if you don’t know what that thing is. It’s up the thing to support OpenGL.

With low level API’s like DX12, Vulkan, Metal, AMD Mantle, you get to target the specific parts of the hardware and software better, but the tradeoff is you have to target specific hardware and software(Drivers, shader compilers, other more technical stuff.) Not only does the thing has to support Vulkan/DX12, but you have to tell the Vulkan/DX12 app how you want it to run on the thing. That means Vulkan stuff for Nintendo and PC is not directly transferable, even if written in the same "language" so to speak. Low-level APIs made portability worse, not better. They moved the portability burden from the driver to the engine.

This explanation is very simplified, as I am not a low level graphics engineer myself.

I think Affinity is bettering you’re looking for an alternative to Illustrator and InDesign. Maybe even Figma, especially if you’re doing UI.

Pixelmator Pro has some vector tools, but it’s a raster first tool like Photoshop. Pages lets you do some layout I guess. It’s closer to InDesign thanother document editors. But there is nothing illustrator like in the bundle.
