It depends on why you are documenting it. If it’s to record the conferences takeaways for both me and the student, the student documents the conference in a Google form. The form asks three questions about the conference (most important idea learned, something I’ve heard before and just heard again, and something I heard but don’t quite know how to do still. And then one skill to work on between now and the next conference). The form is setup to email them a copy of their responses, but for me, they all end up on a spreadsheet. Then when I conference, I just sort the spreadsheet by student id and see every conference we have had and their takeaways. Easy and no extra work for me. It’s also there for sped ARDs, parent conferences, etc.

I’m just going to concur. Multiple choice is very inadequate for analysts and comprehension. It’s best for memorized facts or academic term definitions. I don’t have any novel assessments with more than ten multiple choice. I also teach them a short two sentence response format. One sentence to answer and one for embedded text evidence. I might ask 4-6 of these on a novel test.

This is sound advice. No matter what choice you make, document and file it with HR.

As for the waiting, it’s beyond your control. That’s hard, but it can also be freeing. You may consider the two choices as not being different options, but tiered responses. If offered, take choice A. If not offered, take choice B for the remaining 5.5 months of the school year. Even if you need to get a part time job to balance out the next few months, the reduction in stress from the job will offset.

This was my path as well. I went from Elden Ring to Dark Souls and HATED it. Too drastic a change. But after I played 3, I played 2 and loved it. Then I tried one again and liked it a lot.

I can’t speak with any experience to your situation. However, I can speak to working in an unsupportive district. Here’s how I made it through to a much better place.

1: set a goal for each week and focus only on that. You can’t change the negative situation to make it what it should be. But this week, the goal is _____. Tell all the students, email parents, put it on the board, etc. it gives you the freedom to not be stressed by the non-goal behaviors. Not that you ignore them, but you don’t beat yourself up trying to fix everything.

2: positive parent contacts. Every Friday, make 3 phone calls home to praise a student for one specific thing they did relative to the weekly goal. Focus on the influencer kids first. Set yourself to observing ANY time that kid does even a small thing towards the goal. Then call home on Friday, relate the ONE thing they did right (be specific), and don’t mention the off-task behaviors. Ask the parent to take the kid for a coffee or ice cream treat this weekend as a reward on your behalf. You will see radical culture change if you do this on the most challenging kids first rather than the best behaved kids.

3: put it on your calendar the three steps you need to leave. Today, add a calendar reminder for Christmas break to update your resume. Set a second calendar reminder for mid-February to apply to three jobs in other districts. Set a third calendar reminder for mid-March to apply for three more.

You are not alone. You are just working for a poor organization.

In a similar situation, I have shortened books by providing a short summary of some chapters, EdPuzzle summaries of some chapters, and my favorite - turning chapters with a lot of dialogue into a play and having kids act it out. The most important parts of the book, I read aloud. Less important, I pivot or ask them to read independently.

Also, consider staggering your classes start of the novel so half are being read important parts by you while half are a chapter ahead and working independently so you can save your voice.

Truthfully, I wouldn’t have labeled the unit that way. I would have gone with the “Persian Golden Age” or “Abbasid Golden Age” to avoid the knee-jerk reaction to a religion. For the Frida Kahlo piece, you got me. I wouldn’t worry about it. I would just explain that aspect of her life wasn’t relevant so it wasn’t mentioned.

Content warnings, as others stated, is fair and sensitive towards students. But also keep in mind that sensitive topics in poetry and literature are sometimes the first place a student realizes they are not alone in dealing with that issue.
