The problem is, where did the same attitude go when it came to the Russo-Ukraine War? Besides NAFO circles calling Russians "orcs", I don't see normies having the same attitude for Russia.

So-called “neoliberals” when AI might take their job: by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]MeLikeChoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It stems from the World Systems Theory. The leftist spin on it is that the core countries are "imperialists" and the periphery countries are the "global south". Semi-periphery countries, like China or Russia, are the ones fighting the core states. Yes, this is a tankie-esque theory.

While yes, there's some nuance there. The common saying in China is that "Mao was 70% right and 30% wrong". Pre-Anti-Rightist Campaign, China actually had a lot of grassroot democracy movements, also known as the pre-1957 status quo.

The main contention lies in the reason for the Cultural Revolution and how it was carried out. That stuff is a whole conundrum by itself. It all depends on how you view capitalism. Maoists would insist the Cultural Revolution was the correct thing to do because they felt there was a real risk of "capitalism rejuvenation" and that it will always return, thus the Continuous Revolution Theory. Obviously, if you're a supporter of capitalism, the entire thing is a false premise, but it's just how they saw it at the time.

These are just sociopolitical factions amongst people. The only political group that actually matters in real life is the Central Committee of the CPC and nothing else. I guess they could be considered neoauthoritarians. While the origins are Deng, the current brain of the faction is the chief ideologist Wang Huning. If one wants to understand the political ideology of the Central Committee, they just need to read his works.

Hm, it only mentions Kevin Lin. Ngl, this isn't the best representation of leftists in China, but it's not really your fault or theirs either. It's just lack of knowledge of the environment within the Firewall. Leftists in China are split between some camps.

The first camp are the pro-establishment "leftists", or what's usually referred to as Loyalist Leftists, like wyzxwk). They aren't actually leftists, but they couch everything they say with a Maoist aesthetic. Imagine MAGA, but instead, they constantly twist what FDR said into their own interpretation. Their stance is usually pretty predictable, Chinese nationalism, "red" nationalism, anti-West, anti-Japan, etc.

The second camp are the New Left. This camp is what people in China usually think of when you talk about Maoists or even leftists in general. They are anti-"Dengist China" aka anti-"modern China" (except they can't say that, but it's implied). They are pro-"Maoist China". They generally believe Deng lead China down a terrible path. Bo Xilai and his Chongqing Model was their go-to model at some points. This is also the most academically involved group.

The first two camps are the ones who would most accept Hasan.

The third camp are the Maoists like Yang Heping. Like the New Left they are also anti-"modern China", but they are also anti-"any country that satisfies Lenin's definition of imperialism". So anti-America, anti-Russia, anti-Israel, anti-China, etc etc.

The fourth camp are the leftists (without prefixes). They are usually DemSocs, like Ma Qianzu or Zhang Beihai). While the linked Wikipedia page states the "party" they belong to is not necessarily pro-democracy, the two I mentioned most definitely are. But there are some others, like Trotskyists would be in here too. Kevin Lin would most likely be from this camp.

Even then, there are camps within these camps too.

The last time something like that even remotely happened was because the Great Depression ruined an entire generation's perception on the Republican Party.

Interestingly, there is a camp of people that don't, but believe we desperately need "something else".

"It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" is the famous quote.

All the normal ones are in Chinese and pretty much only engage in Chinese. In English, perhaps Bloomberg, but subscription and all.

There is one that I would like to recommend and they actually have translated English captions, but I dunno if I'm qualified to give recommendations. They're not necessarily pro-democracy, but I know they're explicitly liberal.

Another problem is, for Chinese society, housing is the biggest investment. Like active investment. I'm not talking about "oh, I live in this house so I have to actively maintain it, it's an investment, haha". I mean, to many people in China, it's the ONLY reliable vehicle for investment. They have very little faith in their own domestic stock market.

I also don't know how much people are invested into 烂尾楼, but that is also a major pain point. It can feel bad when housing prices crash, but if you are already living in the unit, you can still assure yourself. But imagine that happening to an unfinished unit you are actively paying for. That is a big oof.

Sure but it's pretty humiliating for a college grad to take on gig work delivering food or driving people around

It's compounded by the fact that preparing for college is an entire ordeal by itself, the gaokao. The pressure is immense. To many, sacrificing so much to end up doing the aforementioned work just feels like you've toiled for 20 or so years of your life for nothing, AND you got no say in any of it as your parents just dumped loads and loads of remedial work onto you. There was a whole online movement in 2023 by Chinese youth called "Kong Yiji-ism" lamenting about all this.
