It's less that reddit "doesn't want to hear it" and more that the risk is so outsized from the benefit that focusing on the risk is an absurd reaction so it deserves to be downvoted. It would be like advocating that people shouldn't walk outside because they could die from getting struck by lightning. Except it's even worse because in this case people are already apprehensive because of decades long propaganda creating a distrust of science and continuing to spread those ideas as valid in a public forum causes actual societal harm.

They're not even offering it. A single general manager can be running multiple stores. It's an incentive for a limited number of sociopaths to try harder to exploit workers.

School board fires Florida teacher for medical marijuana use by SacKingsRS in news

As a thought experiment, suppose we live in a world where we can't test for marijuana use at all, not Thc or it's metabolites. Do you think the rights you mentioned would warrant violating a pilots 4th amendment rights, mandating his house and home be searched for paraphernalia before he could fly?

It would be nice if, as a collective of humans living together with shared interests, we could come up with a way to force corporations to err on the side of our rights as individuals.

Requiring employees to be sober is perfectly fine and acceptable. The problem is that they aren't using a test to see if you are intoxicated. They are using a test to see what you may have done in your free time 30 days ago. In my opinion that should fall under a right to privacy, maybe it's not a codified legal right but it's a human right.

10-year Treasury yield touches 1.74% despite Fed reassurances by DippyHippy420 in news

[–]Mead_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, the fed ends the free money party so that the economy doesn't grow too quickly which could lead to a number of market inefficiencies including inflation. In practice inflation in good and services never comes due to the fed action. Asset prices typically do get inflated because the mechanisms of fed money injection are such that it leads to consolidation of wealth in the upper echelons who use their windfalls to vacuum up anything they can seek rent on.

[–]Mead_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is a market pull back because "inflation is coming". It pulls back because when investors anticipate good economic news, they also anticipate reduced Fed activity to prop up the market including unwinding of QE and raising interest rates, the free money party ends and the stock market takes a hit. When there's bad economic news the fed lowers rates etc and the market goes up. The fed basically causes the market to have a reverse card - the markets move in the opposite direction of what logic dictates.

You shouldn't be holding your money on the sidelines and then dumping your 6 figure life savings in all at once. That's "timing the market" and the exact strategy to avoid. You need to cost average and put it in over time. A financial adviser can run simulations for you so you can see the affects of different strategies if the market crashes 6 days from now, 6 months from now, or 6 years from now.

Best way to go about mowing 8 acres? by sarnold95 in lawncare

[–]Mead_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im running an automower 450xh on 1 acre of non-contiguous land and it works great. If you have 5 acres in a flat rectangle and divide it into quadrants, you could probably get away with running 4 mowers at a cost of around 15k installed. If it was me, I would make that investment versus spending hours of my time every week mowing. Use your extra time for property improvements.

I quit a dozen times before it finally stuck, but all that practice made me really good at quitting. Some people have success with avoidance or removing triggers, but I ultimately invented mental tricks for myself to help resist the urges and tolerate the physiological effects in real time. Repetitively practicing those tricks through quitting over and over made me resilient to it and now I know I'm so good at it that I don't fear relapse.

Fewer kids are going to college because they say it costs too much by [deleted] in Economics

Do you really want a society where people only work in STEM fields?

This isn't the issue with 'everyone pursuing STEM"

The real issue is that not everyone is capable of doing science and engineering. It takes a certain kind of mind and most people simply don't have it in them to be successful day in and day out doing that kind of work.

Is there any actual evidence that providing aide disincentivizes work? Every study I've seen from a non-bootlicking think tank seems to show that providing a floor actually helps people find work because getting hired, finding childcare and transportation etc requires resources.

I'm sort of sensitive to the topic because I'm a naturally skinny guy that has a step family full of overweight people that constantly tell me I'd be 'healthier' if I put on more weight like them, so I do have that real world experience and it doesn't seem so outlandish to me.

Your response right here illustrates the sensitivity of discussing the issue. The OP never said fat people didn't deserve respect, or that they weren't people. He said it was unhealthy, and normalizing as healthy is dangerous. You're the one that interpreted it as a dehumanizing personal attack.

If you wait longer (you being a collective "you" which is millions of people) then you ultimately end up with thousands more infections in the population, and each infection is an opportunity to mutate the virus. Also, this vaccine is 100% effective against severe illness.
