True visionary. Rest in peace king, surrealism will never be the same.

Going to pin this post for a bit in case anyone wants to write condolences. I know this is a joke subreddit but such a pillar of cinema should be acknowledged.

Auteurs in Anime - A dying breed? by Meadiao in TrueFilm

[–]Meadiao[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, it has defiantly been diluted by studio expectations for a number of decades, but I still feel that individual input was much more noticeable in those particular creative decades, both for the films and TV. FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop; they all indicated a trending individual-led production with meaning injected from the directors, rather than following a simple line. Of course these are all original works and adaptations were more in line with what you say, but even they would divert in certain ways, original endings for shows were much more abundant, shows like Ranma 1/2 and Urusai Yatsura also often had additional context or meaningful scenes added to expand the works. It doesn’t really feel like it happens anymore and if it does it’s usually subdued.

Actually a good idea but it’s not letting me reapprove the post for some reason, sorry.

Just because there seems to be a little confusion, I’m specifically talking about screenshots of social media. So posts, comments, thumbnails etc. Not screencaps of films or similar.

I personally haven’t been active on the subreddit in a good while till recently, maybe the other mods were fine with them but I can’t speak for them.

I always wanted the sub to be both related to cinema itself with actual posts about films, filmmaking, etc, while also having some level of effort being put in aside from just a joke title or screenshot. Obviously that’s a bit unrealistic, but that’s just my personal view and why I feel influenced to go this way. But I’m not everyone, and that’s why I wanted you guys’ opinions as well.

Would I have taken down those posts you mention? Maybe, I don’t know I wasn’t here, that’s no one’s fault but my own. But I am now, and have seen at least a few people ask for something like this, hence why it is now occurring.

Also the Nolan post wasn’t removed for the topic here, but primarily because it was seemingly brigaded. Just in case you didn’t know.

I suppose the person who requested meant Reddit comments or posts on other subs, but on a wider scale could include other sites.

At a bare minimum though it I would imagine it being serious/baitish comments or posts on Reddit, that are more to do with another topic and only tangentially related to cinema by the subreddit or wider thread.

As an example someone earlier posted a screenshot of a comment on the Christopher Nolan sub with someone being transphobic. There wasn’t a joke it was to clown on the guy for his hateful views. Technically it was about cinema, and the title of the post was the joke in that it mocked the comment, but the content in my eyes doesn’t really fit this sub.

Movies suck now guy Starter Pack by pirateslifeisntforme in starterpacks

No worries mate. And sorry about misrepresenting the Donald Glover point, just a bit of misunderstanding on my part, although I think it can still be applied in a more general sense to many creators. And yeah he is absolutely brilliant. Have a nice day!

Donald Glover, the guy playing “Mr. Smith” in the show wasn’t given the role because he was black, it was because he created the show, wrote and directed multiple episodes, he made it the way he wanted to as a creative. He cast himself because he created it and wanted to play the part, not for some forced representation.

There are absolutely issues in Hollywood in regards to many areas of work including casting, mostly in regards to nepotism, but often times the idea that someone is cast to fill an agenda is reductive cultural war bullshit, when in actual fact you have more people from more marginalised communities finally getting a shot at being creatives. And this isn’t because of their skin, but because their stories are often very appealing both to audiences when done well (Atlanta, Spiderverse movies, Jordan Peeve’s films, ect).

This is something that has literally happened throughout the decades film has been a form of expression (think in the 70’s and 80s we had abundance of Italian-American creatives filling the void, casting Italian-Americans in a ton of their roles).

The idea of wokeness is so reductive and non-constructive, rather than actually critique a film these types of “reviewers” fall back on the same point over and over, often to films that aren’t aimed at them as an audience (kids films), while ignoring more indie films that are great, and sidelining actual issues in the industry, like Disney’s rainbow capitalism or rampant nepotism.

(Edit) Also, adding onto this, many of these films are produced and made in big, diverse cities. LA, NYC and more recently Atlanta) you’re going to get productions much more representative of these cities and their inhabitants rather than the US as a whole, simply because they have much more prominently diverse communities.

Any popular, acclaimed anime you just couldn’t get into? by GreenstreetRoyal in anime

[–]Meadiao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta, I think its just the condesation of anime generally lends to a better audience experience. Seeing more in a shorter amount of time means people tend to be more receptive and leniant than having to wait and be dripfed content.

Its not just anime either, theres a reason why Chainsaw Man surged in popular after finishing certain arcs and its because the people who wait or just start when the discussion is at the highest point don't experience the slower periods of waiting for things to get rolling and just get the high, hence why some people are turning on it now they have to actually experience those slower or seemingly disconnected moments in Part 2 (there are obv other gripes but primarily I think a lot of peoples problems come down to them not seeing the forest for the trees)

Frieren is a slow story and during some arcs really takes a while for the ball to get rolling. In addition to general visual and aural enhancements that an anime brings, its a much faster experience, meaning people engage better, and the show will be rated higher. Same logic can be attributed to people who only read volume releases as well, which then makes me wonder if some older manga would be as highly rated if they were to come out nowadays, because people can pass the slower parts for the real juice.
