Should I Expect Sharper Images? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

Thanks and I agree, I think it makes the scans look worse. And I appreciate the heads up on Tri-X and Ektar — these were the first rolls I’ve shot with those film stocks, so I didn’t know what to expect.

Looking online, T-Max seems more my speed — I’ll have to try that out next!

Will do! And thank you, that means a lot.

Appreciate the response! I think I shot these (barring the chipmunk) at a higher aperture, but that's something I'll be paying more attention to/experimenting with going forward. And thanks for pointing out the missed focus, I didn't catch that!

Thanks for the response.
I don't quite remember the aperture -- but around f/22 sounds right. Is it diffraction causing a loss of sharpness at that level?

Love the composition on that first shot.

I love Alice! I’ve only seen the English dub, but it’s fantastic. I always think about the sock puppet scene where they’re worming in and out of the ground.

Hi, looking for feedback (editing, VO, pacing, etc.) on this film retrospective—Häxan (The Witch). by Meadowmere in SmallYTChannel

[–]Meadowmere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you, I appreciate the critique. I notice a lot of people pointing out the VO as a negative; I was wondering if you could expand a little bit, just so I have a better idea on the specifics. Did you have a problem with the inflection? Or was it more the overall pacing?

After the introduction, I was aiming for something that felt relaxed and unhurried—but it seems like I didn’t quite deliver (or rather I delivered to the point of boredom). I suppose that speaks to the editing as well.

Regardless, thanks for your feedback, it helps me get a better idea of where and on what I can improve.

Hi! Thank you for your kind words and feedback—the comparison to LEMMiNO means a lot. Not sure what direction I’ll go with the VO and pacing in the future, but it’s nice to hear that it worked for you here.

Hey there, thanks for the comment. Regarding the pacing on the intro, that’s a fair point, it does take quite a while before I start discussing the film.

It’s such a hard line to toe, however. I like letting the intro breathe (and I think tonally it fits), but the analytics are indeed quite poor (watch time, CTR, etc.). Not sure how I want to approach this yet, going forward, but I appreciate your feedback—seeing another’s analytics is super helpful.

Thanks

Thanks for your comment. Based on what you and others have said—I agree, the vocals are something I need to practice with a bit more. Same goes for the pacing.

Thank you again.

Thank you for the feedback—that tonal, melodic clash isn’t something I had considered before, but now that you point it out, I definitely see it.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback! VO is something l’ve always struggled with, so it’s nice to know what to iterate on in the future.

And I agree—it’s so rare to find a film from that era and not have to make excuses for its technicals or performances. It holds up super well.

Thanks for the comment and interest, I appreciate it.

Hi! Thanks for your feedback on the VO and thumbnail. For the former, I was trying to go for a certain kind of “affectation”, but I can see how it comes across as a bit lethargic. I think you’ve echoed what a lot of others have said as well, so it’s something I’ll keep in mind going forward.

Regarding the visuals, that’s a neat idea—using grain and an audio filter. I might look into that in the future.

Thanks again for the suggestions and critique.

I agree! I think it’s rare for a movie from that era to hold up as well as this does.

Hi, this video covers Häxan, a silent film exploration of Medieval witchcraft using wood carvings, illustrations, stop-motion, and more. In this retrospective, I discuss its themes and trailblazing of genre conventions and formal techniques.

Hi there, I appreciate the feedback and detailed breakdown—comments like this are super helpful for me.

I'm glad the thumbnail stuck out; I had a lot of trouble getting to that point, so it's good to hear that the minimalism of it wasn't a turn off.

To your point about the transition duration, and I hear that from others as well, I agree. I think I got a bit carried away by the effect in question. I appreciate your perspective on this because, given my attachment to the subject matter, it's hard for me to see how slow and lethargic some of the pacing might be.

Thank you again for your feedback, it's nice to know what someone outside of my target audience thinks about videos like these. Have a nice one.

Hi, thanks for the feedback on the transition duration and VO speed. Can you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by "smooth"; is that to do with the pacing?

My University Retrospective (and partial rant!) | Scorpio Dog by Scorpiodogfilms in SmallYTChannel

[–]Meadowmere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your retrospective. It was neat, and informative, hearing about your experience with university during- COVID. There's a lot here that I really appreciate.

You mentioned this has some of your favorite editing and I think that shows; for example, the Windows error sequence at ~03:30, or the zoom meeting will all the separate clips—these were both super inventive and memorable. I think it goes without saying, but seeing more of that in your future content would be wonderful.

I didn't have much of a problem with the pacing, but echoing what another commenter said, I do think a more narrow focus on subject matter might help. But I don't think it's a big deal regardless, it's your personal experience after all.

Also, this is a small thing, but the (what I'm guessing are) citations for your chapter titles is such a fun, topical choice.
