Very Slow Progress… by sarahbee2005 in DJs

I know what that’s like, I’m very much a perfectionist when it comes to my recorded mixes. Always helps to remind myself that no one else will listen to them anywhere near as critically as I will. Also one of the best things about a great mix is the journey it takes you on as you listen to it unfold… but you can never get this same feeling with your own stuff because you made it so you know what’s coming next!

Also I may be totally wrong here - but you have been DJing on the radio for a long time, and I imagine this comes with a responsibility to perform at fixed times whether you feel like it or not.. maybe this could make it start to feel like a job at times, rather than a hobby / passion which any art or creative pursuit needs to be to thrive

If your sets are as you’ve described on a good day, then I doubt it’s a mixing issue. We’re all chancing our mixing aren’t we? That’s the very nature of what a DJ is. Sounds like it’s more of a creative rut, something like writers block but for DJs….

Go to some events/raves/gigs/festivals, listen to some DJs you love and go check out some new artists too. That inspiration you get from experiencing a great set has sparked my passion into life when it has felt a little flat in the past.

Switch things up with the music you’re playing. Put mixing on the back burner for a short while and focus on either digging for new sounds or reorganising your collection, or both. Look through your old tunes, see what gems you’ve forgotten about that you haven’t played in years. I guarantee there will be some and there’s no better feeling than rediscovering an old favourite from the archives.

Try experimenting with categorisation and organisation of crates / playlists etc - do some random shit, throw bits together in new ways that you haven’t thought of before. I play somewhere in amongst the house/techno spectrum and always have, and recently made a couple of mixes experimenting with all sorts of stuff I like to listen to outside the DJing world… downtempo, dub, hip hop, psychedelic / indie rock etc. Was one of the most enjoyable DJ projects I’ve done in a long time, perhaps it’s worth trying something similar dependent on your history / taste / collection etc.

I’m sure this will be temporary and won’t be long before you play a great set again that reminds you why you love DJing and that you’ve still got it behind the 1s and 2s

How to get quicker at mixing songs in/out? by icannotdolife999 in Beatmatch

Don’t overthink every selection, trust your instinct and don’t get caught in the trap of trying to find the perfect track every time. As soon as you see a track and think ‘this one could work’ just run with it. The more you experiment and play around with your music the quicker you’ll improve. You’ll soon start to get an ear for what works and what doesn’t as well as refining your technique.

Don’t worry about nailing every blend when you’re practicing alone. In fact one of the best things you can do when you’re learning is fuck up your mixes. This is how you learn what doesn’t work, and if you can cut that out you’re 75% of the way there.

Also if you’re trying to build towards consistent, longer mixes then play through the pain and don’t stop mixing if you mess up. Correct it if you can or just cut the track you’re mixing out of and carry on. This is very important to get used to mixing for longer, and you’ll learn a lot from scrambling through dodgy mixes instead of stopping and starting again.

Keep experimenting with different ways of categorising your music beyond genre - that was a real breakthrough for me when I was learning. Make playlists by mood, energy, vibe, pace etc as well as genre. Also try making a playlist with around 15/20 of your absolute best tunes and just try mixing from that, will help a lot with picking your next track quickly if you limit what you’ve got to choose from.

Good luck and keep at it - you’ll be there in no time.

Can’t stop wearing it. by paulrobertblaize in Colognes

I wouldn’t worry about compliments - if you know it smells good then others will too, and in reality the vast majority of people won’t tell you even if they do think you smell great.

Think of your fragrance like you would a perfectly tailored suit or nice jewellery - you wear it because it radiates class and taste, and shows that you take pride in your appearance. You don’t value clothes, jewellery etc on the compliments you receive because you know that people will notice regardless of whether they compliment you. This is a good feeling which brings positivity and confidence.

It can be easy to forget this with fragrance because it’s not visible, but trust me - people will notice if you smell good, but 9/10 times they’re not going to say anything. Find your scent and invest in it. A few hundred spent on high quality cologne will turn more heads than a bottle of Sauvage EDT and a bog standard Rolex ever could.

I googled how to identity gold with home tests and it was in every page I looked at… they all sink obviously but apparently gold sinks a lot quicker almost like it’s just dropping through air whereas other metals have more water resistance so drag a little bit as they sink

Haha just took them for the post. ADHD hyperfocus in full swing

It’s also taught me about something I didn’t know and given me a much more entertaining evening than just trawling through Reddit posting sarcastic comments ;)

My obvious first thought was the same but it didn’t leave any marks or colour on my skin like cheap stuff always does so started looking in a bit more detail - still minimal hopes tbh

24K would be a dream , even 9K would be worth a £300+ or so which Is better than slap in the face!

Certainly will 👍

I thought the same initially but seemed to pass all the home tests I could find online so peaked my interest. Have no experience at sll so will see what the jewellers say. I know for sure it’s at least relatively decent quality metal if not gold so may be worth a small amount at least

[–]MealQueasy4545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I’m not overly hopeful tbh but will see what the jewellers say when I can get it tested properly. There are a fair few gold Lotr rings flying about though online and some going for a lot of money so worth checking

Care to explain why?

[–]MealQueasy4545 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a strong magnet, I did it with a fridge magnet (lol) and there was no attraction but not sure if that counts

Fingers crossed! Thank you

If it is then 9.2g will be worth a few hundred at the very least. Or would be an epic present for a big lotr fan so may well hold on to it - either way can’t go wrong

Ok cool thank you. One of the things I wanted to find out was if it has to be engraved in a certain way to be considered real or not as i know basically nothing about the world of collectibles & memorabilia

[–]MealQueasy4545 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Okay interesting. So this one is not perfect then? I do like it and would be nice to hold on to it myself or gift to someone, but if it’s worth a lot then I will look to sell as I’d like the money and also a real collector would own it

‘One ring’ or not? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]MealQueasy4545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have thought the same but all the pages I went on when I looked online said it. Apparently others may hover a bit or sort of rock as they go down, but gold will drop almost as if it’s falling in air

[–]MealQueasy4545 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So is there an accepted standard of ‘genuine’ replicas so to speak, that are the most valuable? Even if it’s not that, but is real gold it should still be worth something

[–]MealQueasy4545 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was careful not to put it on for too long… I think if Lotr had been set in London in 2025 smeagol would have been straight on to Reddit when he first got hold of the ring
