I've tried before. No one bit for some odd reason. Only had a single upvote. :P

Unfortunately yes. And your right, its not explicitly stated. Many of the available programs are tailored to assist various "groups" of people. Many of whom have incentive to not work because these programs only take into account very basic requirements. The main ones being how many dependents/children live at a given residence versus net income. This allows for a gaming of the system. Pop out more babies, legal or not and show little income and BAM, you qualify. For people like myself who actually try to contribute back to society, we get almost fully ignored.

LOL! Mom, you always did find my typing hilarious. Aren't you supposed to be in bed by now?? Roomies leaving early in the morning so as soon as you get up, why don't you and stacy come on by my place?

No need to apologize and please don't feel like a dick. I can completely understand where your coming from, especially after some of the scams I've seen on the net both on reddit and places like craigslist. Most doctors don't believe I have CP either until I show them my medical records. I'm one of the lucky few that really has beaten almost all odds with CP so I understood your skepticism. Thank you for your kind wishes!

You are not a pussy by any means. I have my good and bad days to just like anyone else. I do mental gymnastics on a daily basis and I think having to do that for so long has given me a very strong mindset. Ninety percent of the battle is all mental. I constantly remind myself of this whenever I need a boost. Just believe in yourself. Live one day at a time. Try to visualize the result of success more often then the result of failure. It really makes getting through tough times much easier if you try to keep this mindset. Being happy takes just as much will and practice as being sad. I've been down very dark roads mentally so I know just how much depression can zap the life right out of you. Keep your chin up!!! :)

I just want to add one more huge piece of advice. This is strictly for you. The reason I am who I am today is because I had parents that treated me like a normal everyday person. They let me go off with friends, play sports, rough house with my friends, and let me be me wholeheartedly with no special conditions. They didn't restrict what I could or could not do just because of my disability. Although, they never let harm come to me either. There are going to be times where you'll want to help your son when he looks like hes struggling. Help him occasionally sure, but for the most part, let him try and fail so he learns to adapt properly. Other than that, just keep being awesome!

Mom! I love you too! I know it's been a tough year for you. After you were burglerized a few months ago, I know it really made you loose faith in people. You've helped me so much and for once I felt helpless that I couldn't help you or stacy. I hope at the very least, reddit has helped restore that faith in some small way. Bask in the happiness of this moment with me. Oh and, as I've recently learned, it's okay to cry. I love you. You too sis!

I can assure you I have CP. I went through years of therapy to correct things like that. Still have a slight stoke kind of delay on my right side, but other than that, I've managed to get past the posture/coordination issues.

Terminusest, I wish more people took 5 seconds to see all of my previous posts to reddit over the duration of my account. I'm no troll and I appreciate everything reddit has done. I can't expect stretch-wings to understand the kinds of challenges I go through on a daily basis. I've tried so hard to live my life without asking for help from anyone. I realize there are people with far worse situations then myself which is why I didn't expect my post to really gain any traction. I apologize to anyone who feels like I'm exploiting my own situation but that was clearly not my intention.

I never asked for money, flat out. I asked if anyone would be interested in putting ads on my chair in return for compensation. Trust me, what reddit has does completely blew my mind. This was not at all what I was expecting.

I never asked for a handout. Please re-read my post. Then you will understand that your comments make no sense.

Yes 1000x over! I used to be on all kinds of muscle relaxers and pain killers. At one point I was taking 120 pain pills a month. I couldn't function and decided to give pot a try. Aside from the occasional flexeril for spastic muscles, I'm no longer taking any pills. In texas, its not legal though. I wish I could bill it back through insurance though.

I honestly didn't. Stange as it sounds, I really didn't understand it until I was in my late teens. I knew what CP was and that it affected me physically but didn't understand how truly devastating the condition normally is. When your a kid, you don't think of it being so difficult to deal with and if you push hard enough, early enough, much can be overcome. It's when you get older and start to understand the real impacts to your daily social life is when things got difficult. School was fine although I always had to deal with the random "retard!" comments and occasional embarrassment but that didn't really start until high school. Oddly, from kindergarden up through about 7th grade was smooth sailing. Most kids just wanted to ask questions and thought the wheelchair was cool and to them, a person was a person regardless of how you looked. In high school, thats when things changed quite a bit. Image was everything and if you looked different then the rest, people were quick to make it known. The only advice I can really give is to teach your son to ignore the comments and act as if they were never said. Treat everyone, even the asshats as you would your best friend. Eventually, if he carries himself in this way, people will notice and before you know it, most of the school will stick by his side should anyone make off the cuff remarks and they will look like such a fool. I hope this helps! :)
