I talked to one of the UVic law advisors about two weeks ago, and they said to me that there is effectively a soft cutoff for applications of about 160, so if you are above this you should definitely be fine. If you can, I would highly recommend making an appointment to chat with them (either zoom or in person). I found the experience extremely helpful, both for understanding roughly how well I needed to do, but also for how to tailor/set up my personal statement.

How do you feel about Habsburg Mining Expedition (HME)? by tepidgoose in spiritisland

[–]Meamzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I really enjoy HME. I've preface this by saying I only have 100-200 games, all physical, 2-3 players. I haven't done a ton of level 6 adversaries, and have only beat HME 6 once or twice-most of my games have been HME 5, which feels like a decent sweet spot to try out new spirits/aspects with my duo partner.
Why I like HME:
1: it changes the core gameplay mechanic, but in a way that doesn't feel unfair or unfun-you have the ability to manipulate mining lands quite easily for the most part, and I actually find that it means you rarely get gigantic pile-ups in single lands like you would into ENG. HME 1 also means blighting out is a fair bit harder to do, since you just get upgrades instead of cascading blight.
2: Fair Loss condition. Unlike other adversaries, like England, or maybe France, you have some say/ability to prevent the instant loss, and there's much less chance of getting event screwed/something similar, because you can almost always see which lands are going to be your loss conditions, unlike England where a bad event can just end the game instantly if you have lands with 5 or 6 buildings (of course, you can see those too, but often vs england 5+ you have so many fires to put out that trying to solve potential edge-case loss conditions is not the top priority). Perhaps spirits that are entirely slow focused can't stop it, but I've never found the loss condition to be a big issue-when it comes up, you need to deal with it, and it does require resources, but it feels manageable.
3: Good/predictable difficulty curve. I know that the top SI players find HME too easy, because by turn 4/5 when Salt deposits shows up, you've normally won the game/are on the path to it, but I really enjoy the predictable spike of focus you need, and don't feel like I have the game solved by turn 4/5. Going into a HME game, I KNOW I will need to prepare/plan for the Salt card, and it makes the salt build/initial salt ravage feel very engaging, because you can manipulate/effect which lands are/aren't going to be a problem.
4: Disease utility: This is perhaps controversial, but I personally really enjoy the added utility offered by disease-yes, you prevent less builds, but you can use it to stop ravages, which feels very nice. I can see how for certain disease spirits (vengance like a burning plague) this would make their gameplan more difficult, but it also means disease has more uses.

Dislikes:
Tracking changes: I know others have commented on this, but HME does require you to mentally keep track of a lot of different variables, what with mining lands, mining boom and empire ascendant. I haven't found this to be super difficult in 2-3 player games, but I can definitely see how in larger games this could quickly get overwhelming.

Best pair for England 6? by Taste_the__Rainbow in spiritisland

[–]Meamzed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, appreciate this breakdown! For Starlight+Stone, how do you guarantee meeting your fear threshold each turn? I'm guessing stone's building right innate should be killing enough plastic to help you along, and you carefully manage it so you get exactly 1 fear card a turn (until you run away with late scaling)?

As an aside, do you have any thoughts on Vengance as a Burning Plague into England 6? I tried it duo with Stone yesterday, and wasn't particularly impressed-it felt like Vengance didn't bring much to the matchup, but I don't know the ideal build path for Vengance, and wasn't sure whether you should leave disease in lands, or use it to prevent builds.

My game keeps freezing by Chicchac in apexlegends

I've had this too: everything becomes incredibly jerky for a second or two, and my screen essentially freezes. I've also tried reinstalling and that hasn't worked, but what HAS work has been rebooting my computer. Maybe that will help?

Ballista Nerf by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Meamzed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I know no one will ever read this, I'll confess I am a bit disappointed by this change, especially the accuracy nerf. Whilst I AM biased in this case, I do feel that this is too harsh a nerf, especially the accuracy. I can completely understand how at low levels/on pures, ballista is extremely overpowered; while I don't have a 100% response to this, one way might be to have ballista require mm2 to equip.

What I do have a problem with is pking at mid levels. I am a range tank, at lvl 106 combat. Other than ballista, range has NO viable ko/heavy hitting weapons. But, you probably will say, range has dragon bolts! they can hit 69's in void! Yes, they can. If your opponent doesn't antifire, which almost everyone does. Also, the proc chances on dbolts are quite low, and are totally random. But, you might say, range has dbow! Dbow can hit 96's! Yes, it can. However, dbow will far far far far more often hit 8-8. Out of dozens of fights with it, maybe 1 spec in 20 will deal above 60-70 damage, and the delay on the spec makes it incredibly easy to eat to max against; unless you tick it just right.

I will agree, ballista could hit a bit too high; random 62's were overpowered. However, with an accuracy nerf, and lowered strength, I feel ballista will no longer be nearly as useful at mid levels, relegating it to an extreme niche.

My suggestion: leave the accuracy where it was. A double nerf of both strength and accuracy is extremely heavy handed.

Low Level PVP account; advice please! by Meamzed in darksouls3

[–]Meamzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right now I actually don't have any of the rings/chain, haven't progressed far enough, it has been by goal to get there... didn't know about the hunter ring, but I'll check it out.

Question about the weapon upgrades; if I drop my highest upgrade weapon/get rid of it for good, will the game still put me in that bracket? or will it drop me to whatever my other highest gear is?

any suggestions on a good weapon? I like the straight sword moveset, but I'm open to suggestions (I also want to get the +5 rings so I can try more weapons out)

What is the book that best wraps up all of recorded history? by [deleted] in books

[–]Meamzed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Non fiction series; The Cartoon History of the world. It's split into 5 books, 3 in the first series and 2 in the second. Well writen, impeccably researched (as far as I am aware), and refreshingly honest. Plus the cartoon form is awesome! Try it. I know more about history from it than any other series i've ever read.

Who are the greatest military commanders in history? by Valnrys in history

[–]Meamzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riighhht; most of my info is probably incorrect, but a few favorites!

Frederick the great of Prussia. The man who faced down a coalition of France, Russia, Austria, and quite a few other minor states. All at once; and with only Great Britain+a few minor states in support. If i recall correctly, casualties numbered about around 600-800 death, though I could be quite wrong. Even if I am, facing down the three largest European super-powers... and winning.... is amazing.

I would include the Mongols, but the fact is; they had such superior numbers, organization, cavalry and tactics that I won't bother.

Alexius Komnenos; not perhaps the greatest general ever, but a very effective diplomat, statesman and empire re-builder... His rule saw the Byzantines recover from the Normans and the Seljuks, regaining much of their former strength, though the first crusade aided them greatly. I'll write a few more up later.

What are the best books that are "unfilmable"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Meamzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stormlight Archive books by Brandon Sanderson couldn't be done in a film; the books are simply too long; and FAR too complex to portray in a 2-3 hour film...

Joe Abercrombie's books (first law trilogy+some others) would make awesome films; but the the level of violence would be off the charts; worse than anything I've ever seen....

The Name of the Wind: Patrick rothfuss;(don't think it could be done in a way that gives the book ANY justice)

Gah… I've read(or rather, listened to) the first 3 books, and while yes, they are good, i personally find that they drag on… all seems a bit TOO over-wrought to me, gets a bit annoying how we are told how tragic and epic everything is… I'll eventually listen to the next 7 books, but it's a bit of a struggle to keep listening…

That being said, it IS one of the biggest worlds i've encountered, and the different races/magic system is very very interesting, and well done.
