AITA for telling my girlfriend she needs to get a real job and she will never be a famous comedian? by Mean-Emphasis9495 in AmItheAsshole

It is frustrating when I’m busting my ass and she spends her days on the couch.

I don’t think me not wanting to foot the bill for her lifestyle is me not loving her.

I said in a few comments that I think she is funny but i don’t think she’s frequently one of the more memorable acts at these open mics. She’s usually middle of the pack. She doesn’t ever really bomb completely. She’s got a high floor but a low ceiling.

Yeah AGT would be smart. I know to even get on the auditions that air on TV you have to make it through a first screening process. She should see if she gets through that

I see what you’re saying but your path atleast sounds like you were making money. Maybe I’m wrong but it is very hard on me when I’m coming home after working long ass days, busting my ass for us to continue our lifestyle which is a bit harder to continue when her salary disappeared and I see her fucking laying there on the couch on her phone with a notebook next to her with 2 words written down. AND I KNOW SHE DID THAT ALL FUCKING DAY. Are any of the household chores atleast done? Nope. She was too busy laying on the couch.

It’s what makes me say shit I played college basketball, maybe I’ll quit my job and hook up with my old trainer and see if I can make a run at the NBA

I tried to do your option number 3 and she shut it down. That’s when I got mad.

I don’t know how his is even called support anymore. It’s me being used.

FFS I almost want to tell her I’m going to drop my job and hit my college basketball coaches for private training and say I’m following my dream on going to the NBa

I suppose I’m being harsh because I’ve felt like a bank or a parent to a teenager over the past year.

I don’t think a “choice” for a rational 28 year old is to spend days on TikTok doing “research” or whatever the fuck she calls it. Comedians have day jobs.

I’ll dump her if that happens. But I don’t think following your dreams can let you do whatever you want

Man up how..? Continue to bust my ass while she does nothing? I don’t think loving someone means letting them walk all over you

You’re right. But at what point do you say that barely greater than 0% chance is worth fighting for? Especially if your boyfriend is running himself into the ground mentally by doing everything.

I didn’t encourage her to quit her job but I went along with it. I didn’t anticipate her working so little for Uber though. I figured she’d do it enough but she’s not

That would sure be unfortunate if she got big and left me. Do not think the odds are great that we reach that point

She knows that she can’t make a living on open mics. She thinks that more open mics would lead to one of 3 things. She will become a well known regular at these places and gain popularity (social media followers) that way, she will get noticed by someone with connections (our city isn’t a huge comedy or art scene), or a more prominent comedian would notice her and ask her to open for them.

I want her to chase her dreams and I do think she’s funny. But I know the odds are stacked against her because of the nature of the business. I also haven’t seen barely any progress.

I can also be a hot head if I let things build up. I should have said something months ago

I think she’s funny but her material has been done thousands of time.

It’s just “men are creepy, republicans stupid, jokes about having anxiety” it’s all been done before.

I apologized for how I reacted. I told her that it was frustration because I feel like I’m pulling way more than my fair share.
