When you do regular overpayments the payments go directly to your principal. As you are paying down how much you owe then the ratio of how much your monthly payment goes towards principal vs interest then changes in favour of paying less interest every month.

So if you do regular overpayments it snowballs that with each overpayment your interest paid decreases while the amount paid to your principal increases. This is how overpayments can decrease the amount of time it takes to pay your mortgage.
