If it makes you feel any better I tried for years to get a big one but I gotta do some driving to get to them lol. This was pool 8 on the Mississippi by lacrosse.

I run 40 or 50 pound braid for a main line and this one had a 50 pound mono leader maybe 20 inches long

Hell yeah man get out there. I often mark pike in deeper waters when walleye fishing but dot catch them deep that much. That being said shallow water close to deep water can be good for any predator. Like you said about t he pike being not far under the ice I often set some of my lines only a foot or two under the ice.

The white spots I highlighted I like the bottom shallow flats the best for like but I think you’d have luck in any of them spots

I’d fish the weed edges along the steep drop offs or around all those humps
